2026 Lexus NX vs. 2026 Lexus UX Comparison

Jack R. Nerad | May 04, 2026

Sibling rivalries go back long before Curly and Moe to Cain and Abel, and now Lexus offers its own version of that timeless showdown in the 2026 NX and UX. Together, they serve as the brand's most approachable entry points into its crossover lineup. Like siblings, they share well known Lexus qualities: smooth driving manners, sleek interior design, and a focus on easy-to-use technology.

The NX, a longstanding key model in the lineup, offers luxury with a slightly larger footprint than the sleeker UX. One of the NX’s main advantages is its wide range of powertrains, which is rare in the luxury crossover market. Buyers can choose from a turbocharged four-cylinder, a conventional hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), providing the NX with broader appeal than most competitors, and definitely more options than its smaller hybrid-only sibling.

The UX acts as the smallest sibling in the Lexus NX-UX comparison. In fact, it is smaller in nearly every aspect: size, price, and performance. It also serves as the entry-level option for Lexus SUVs. With a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) just under $40K, the UX provides many buyers with their first experience with Lexus ownership. Its exclusively hybrid powertrain offers strong fuel economy, averaging in the low 40s mpg, and its compact size makes it perfect for city living. It is easy to park, while still offering seating for five and practical cargo space.

For shoppers considering these two closely related crossovers, the decision ultimately hinges on how much space, powertrain flexibility, and daily versatility they desire from their Lexus experience.

Price and Value

For 2026, the Lexus NX lineup comprises four trim levels: Base, Premium, Luxury, and F Sport Handling. Each can be paired with one of three powertrains. The lineup includes the turbocharged NX 350, the NX 350h hybrid, or the plug-in NX 450h+, with prices starting at $46,470 for the front-wheel-drive (FWD) NX 350h. The least expensive non-hybrid model, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) NX 350, begins at $47,120, while the flagship NX 450h+ F Sport Handling AWD starts at $64,425. All prices include the $1,295 destination charge.

Every 2026 NX comes with four years of unlimited mileage roadside assistance and complimentary LexusCare maintenance for the first two dealer visits. Buyers also receive a trial of Lexus Drive Connect, which unlocks remote vehicle functions, emergency assistance, cloud navigation, and service alerts, along with a 30-day/3-gigabyte Wi-Fi Connect trial that turns the SUV into a mobile hotspot.

The 2026 Lexus UX offers four trim levels: Base, Premium, F Sport Design, and F Sport Handling. Buyers can choose between FWD or AWD versions for each trim. The FWD 300h is the most affordable UX model, with an MSRP of $38,035. The highest-end model is the UX 300h F Sport Handling AWD, starting at $48,070. All prices include the $1,295 destination charge.

Lexus offers buyers of its 2026 model-year vehicles a complimentary maintenance plan that covers the first two scheduled service visits, along with roadside assistance for four years with no mileage restrictions. The UX includes trials of various connected services, such as Drive Connect, Remote Connect, and Wi-Fi Connect, of different durations. The UX's Safety Connect and Service Connect plans offer up to a 10-year free trial period.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The UX is less expensive but smaller; the NX provides a wider variety of powertrains and the luxury of extra space.

Reliability and Quality

The Lexus NX does not rank among the top three models in the Compact Premium SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner reported problems after three years of ownership.

The NX ranks second in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.

The 2026 Lexus NX comes with a standard warranty of four years or 50,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of six years or 70,000 miles.

The Lexus UX ranks highest in the Small Premium SUV segment in the 2026 VDS and second in its segment in the 2025 IQS. The small luxury crossover provides the same warranty coverage as the Lexus NX and other Lexus models.

Advantage: Lexus UX

Why? While both models perform very well in initial quality, the UX also stands out in vehicle dependability.

Performance, Efficiency, and Utility

For 2026, the Lexus NX offers buyers three powertrain options. The NX 350 features a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The NX 350h hybrid, available with either FWD or AWD, combines its gas engine and electric assist for a total of 240 hp. At the top of the lineup, the AWD NX 450h+ PHEV delivers 304 hp and EPA-estimated 37 miles of electric-only driving.

The EPA rates the FWD NX 350h at 40 mpg combined and the AWD version at 39 mpg, while the turbocharged NX 350 gets 24 mpg combined. Official figures for the 2026 NX 450h+ are still pending, but Lexus estimates an 84-MPGe combined rating for the PHEV flagship of the NX lineup.

A two-row, five-passenger crossover, the NX is both longer and taller than the sleeker UX. You do not need to be an MIT grad to see that these size differences provide a more spacious passenger area and extra luggage capacity compared to its sibling. Cargo space is ample, offering 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 46.9 cubic feet when the second row is folded down. A power liftgate is standard, and higher trims upgrade it to a hands-free operation.

All 2026 UX crossovers come with the same hybrid powertrain, offering FWD and AWD options. The drivetrain features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a single electric motor for FWD models and two electric motors for AWD models. Lexus states that the maximum system output is 196 hp, but it does not provide a peak torque figure. All versions use a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

According to the EPA, all FWD versions of the 2026 Lexus UX achieve 44 mpg combined. Adding an AWD system causes a slight 1 mpg decrease to 43 mpg combined.

The Lexus UX offers seating for up to five. Overall, it is 6.5 inches shorter in length than the NX and has a shorter wheelbase, which slightly reduces rear-seat legroom. Three adults will find the NX's back seat more spacious than the UX's. The UX's rear cargo area measures 17.2 cubic feet, and Lexus does not specify the cargo space with the 60/40-split rear seatback folded down. The rear hatch is power-operated, and a kick sensor is available.

Advantage: Lexus NX

Why? The NX offers more power and more space than the UX.

Safety and Driving Assistance

At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand-new vehicle to include the following safety features:

So, how do the NX and UX stack up? Let's take a look.

Each 2026 Lexus NX comes equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 (LSS+ 3.0), the brand’s comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Key ADAS features include collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assistance, navigation-linked adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane centering assistance, and automatic emergency steering and braking support. While blind spot and rear cross-traffic warnings are not included in the LSS+ 3.0 package, both are included as standard equipment across the lineup. Customers can also opt for upgrades such as a surround view camera system, front cross-traffic warning, lane change assist, and active parking assistance.

At the time of writing, official safety ratings for the 2026 Lexus NX have not been released. As of now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not provided an overall safety rating for the 2026 NX. Also, testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is still ongoing, although the structurally similar 2025 NX received a Top Safety Pick+ award for the 2025 calendar year, the Institute’s highest accolade.

Like the NX, Lexus equips every 2026 UX with LSS+ 3.0. In addition to the systems listed at the start of this section, the UX includes lane centering assistance, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high-beam headlights. The standard Proactive Driving Assist detects curves and road objects, helping with braking and steering. The UX also comes with standard safe exit assistance, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning. A color head-up display is optional.

The NHTSA awarded the 2026 Lexus UX a top five-star overall safety rating. Meanwhile, the IIHS gave the 2026 UX a Good rating for small-overlap front protection and a Marginal rating for its updated moderate-overlap front crash test.

Advantage: Lexus UX

Why? The UX has an NHTSA five-star overall safety rating.

Infotainment and Technology

The 2026 NX features the latest generation of the Lexus Interface infotainment system. Most trims come with a 9.8-inch touchscreen, while a 14-inch display is optional and standard on the NX 450h+ PHEV. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are included across all trims, along with Bluetooth connectivity and a three-month SiriusXM Platinum satellite radio trial. Higher trims upgrade to a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

Lexus equips the 2026 NX with a range of connected services, each offering its own trial period. Remote Connect enables remote engine start and door locking; Wi-Fi Connect turns the NX into a hotspot for up to 5 devices; Safety Connect provides emergency assistance; and Service Connect monitors vehicle health and maintenance needs.

The NX's navigation system is cloud-based and offers features similar to those of competing systems. However, Lexus enhances it with Destination Assist, which works like OnStar, connecting drivers to live agents who can send directions directly to the SUV. Personalized digital profiles save preferences for navigation, audio, and language settings, while the Intelligent Assistant responds to natural voice commands for climate control, route planning, and infotainment management.

The 2026 Lexus UX features the in-house-developed Lexus infotainment platform. Most UX trims come with an 8-inch touchscreen, while a 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard on the 300h F Sport Handling and available on the Premium trims. The infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a three-month trial of SiriusXM. Lexus equips most 2026 UX SUVs with a six-speaker audio system, with a 10-speaker upgrade available on some trims.

Buyers of the 2026 UX receive a suite of connected services, each with a free trial. Drive Connect includes cloud-based navigation, a voice-enabled Intelligent Assistant, and live agent support through Destination Assist. Remote Connect offers remote engine start, while Safety Connect provides automatic emergency assistance.

Lexus Smart Access, standard on both the UX and NX, is a proximity-based keyless entry and start system that allows drivers to unlock the doors and start the engine simply by having the key fob nearby. Its built-in engine immobilizer adds an extra layer of security by ensuring the vehicle starts only when the fob’s coded transponder matches the vehicle’s internal authorization system.

Advantage: Lexus NX

Why? When it comes to digital displays, size matters, and the NX has larger screens.

Independent Expert Opinion

2026 Lexus UX F Sport Interior Dashboard

2026 Lexus UX F Sport

The 2026 Lexus NX remains one of the brand’s main offerings, designed to deliver luxury in a subcompact crossover size. Its cabin is well-crafted, with quality materials and an easy-to-use control layout, while its driving manners lean toward calmness rather than showiness. Although I wish the F Sport Handling trim had even more horsepower, the NX provides a premium driving experience suited for everything from city driving to long highway trips.

Its wide range of powertrain options is one of its main advantages, especially when compared to the single powertrain UX. NX shoppers can choose from a turbocharged gasoline engine, a fuel efficient hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid, which is quite rare among luxury crossovers. Front-wheel drive is standard on the hybrid, while the rest of the lineup relies on AWD for better stability and traction.

If the NX is the middle child in the RX-NX-UX lineup, the UX might be seen as the youngest of the three. Smaller than the NX in nearly every aspect, including price, the UX is the "entry-level" Lexus SUV. With a starting MSRP comfortably below the average transaction price in the United States, the UX allows many buyers to experience Lexus luxury for the first time.

Besides its attractive price, every 2026 UX SUV features a hybrid powertrain. That means the stylish UX is not just affordable to buy but also delivers very nice 40+ mpg fuel economy. Its compact size allows it to park in spots that might be off-limits to larger vehicles, a big advantage for city residents. And, despite its small dimensions, it still seats five and offers plenty of cargo space. While those needing more room might prefer the NX, there are good reasons to pick the smaller contender in this comparison.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The NX is bigger, more powerful, and more spacious, while the UX is more affordable, has more expressive styling, uses less gas, and provides an urban vibe.
