Nobody really needs a convertible, but many people want one. For a lot of us, a convertible is the ultimate dream car. It conjures up fun, excitement, and perhaps even romance. Driving a convertible with the top down and the wind whistling through your hair is the polar opposite of piloting a full-size SUV on a crowded highway at rush hour. It is the kind of scenario that enables you to forget that droptops are among the most impractical vehicles you can buy, with 2-door access and interior space that, at best, will accommodate four adults.
A convertible wouldn't be "convertible" without a collapsing top. The best convertibles have a top that folds quickly and easily. Some use a power mechanism that makes it a simple matter of pushing a button. Others have light and easy-to-handle manual tops. Of course, a good convertible will also have a top that you can quickly erect when rain, wind, or cold force the issue. Most convertibles use "soft tops" made of fabric (often referred to as "ragtops"), while others employ folding metal tops (often called "hardtop convertibles").
Being fun to drive is a crucial attribute of the best convertibles. Some offer performance-oriented acceleration and handling. Others create a fun-to-drive atmosphere without resorting to high-horsepower engines and sharp-as-a-knife steering response. They often rely on high style and the fact that when you drive or even ride in a convertible, the whole world is wide open for inspection in a way no closed vehicle can offer.
While rear-seat accommodations in even the best convertibles are challenging, the front seats are often the best ones in the house. Convertibles give their drivers a fantastic view of the road ahead and unparalleled views of the scenery.
This list of the top-rated convertibles provides an excellent resource for those looking for the unique joys a convertible can offer.
