The Chevrolet Trax and Subaru Crosstrek call themselves SUVs, but their differences are as clear as their similarities. Both models have the same subcompact SUV shape, offer seating for five, and provide passenger and cargo flexibility with a liftback design that surpasses that of compact sedans. However, beneath these shared traits lies a notable gap in their capabilities.
Chevrolet targets urban value seekers with the Trax, offering a compact size, upright stance, versatile interior, and appealing affordability. Its only engine choice is a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder, which provides just enough power and decent fuel efficiency. It is a straightforward deal: SUV style and cargo space without the high price tag.
In contrast, Subaru markets the Crosstrek as an everyday adventure vehicle, offering all seven trim levels with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Its two engine options are more powerful than the Trax’s single three-cylinder, and its hybrid variants achieve an EPA-estimated 36 mpg combined. Although not built for rock crawling, the Crosstrek’s AWD system, hill descent control, and multiple drive modes provide dependable all-season performance and occasional trail exploration.
The similarities make this comparison logical, but the differences are hard to ignore. The Trax offers no AWD option, while the Crosstrek, with its standard AWD, costs more. Both combine practicality with personality, but one is probably much better suited to you than the other.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax hits showrooms with five different trim levels, LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ, each exclusively with front-wheel drive (FWD). While it brands itself as an SUV, Chevy does not offer AWD on any version of the 2026 Trax. Prices range from $23,495 for the base LS trim to $27,195 for both the Activ and 2RS, which have the same starting price at the top of the lineup. All prices include the $1,795 destination charge.
For 2026, Chevrolet extends complimentary roadside assistance coverage for Trax buyers for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Chevrolet also covers the first scheduled maintenance visit at no cost for up to 12,000 miles. Every 2026 Trax includes access to GM’s OnStar system, offering a variety of paid connectivity subscriptions. Owners automatically receive the OnStar Basics package, which includes automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance, and remote vehicle commands, free for eight years.
In 2026, Subaru expands the Crosstrek lineup to seven trims: Base, Premium, Sport, Sport Hybrid, Limited, Limited Hybrid, and Wilderness. The big news is the addition of two hybrid-powered trims, and Subaru makes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard across the board. The Crosstrek Base, starting at $28,415, remains the most affordable trim. At the same time, the new Limited Hybrid now holds the position of the highest-priced variant, with a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $36,415. All prices include the $1,420 destination charge.
The 2026 Crosstrek offers complimentary roadside assistance for three years or 36,000 miles, but Subaru does not include free scheduled maintenance. Buyers receive a four-month, free trial of both the SiriusXM All-Access Radio package and the SiriusXM Travel Platinum Plan. All 2026 Crosstrek SUVs come with access to Subaru’s subscription-based Starlink Safety and Security connected-services suite. The optional Starlink Concierge can provide live assistance with navigation, reservations, and other trip-planning tasks. A Wi-Fi hotspot is available by subscription on every 2026 Crosstrek except the base model.
Advantage: Chevrolet Trax
Why? The Trax is cheaper than the Subaru, even considering that the Crosstrek has standard AWD.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
The Chevrolet Trax does not rank among the top three models in the Small SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner reported problems after three years of ownership.
The Trax also does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax comes with a standard warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles.
The Subaru Crosstrek ranks highest in the Small SUV segment in the 2026 VDS, but it does not place in the top three in its segment for the 2025 IQS. Its warranty coverage is comparable to that of the Trax.
Advantage: Subaru Crosstrek
Why? The Crosstrek is the most dependable model in its market segment.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
For 2026, the Chevrolet Trax features a single powertrain option: a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and FWD. Although a three-cylinder engine is somewhat unconventional, the Trax feels reasonably lively, partly because of its geared transmission rather than the continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) offered by competitors.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 2026 Trax Flex Fuel models get 30 mpg combined when using regular gasoline and 22 mpg on E85 ethanol. Standard gasoline models get 29 mpg combined.
The Chevrolet Trax is 3 inches longer than the Subaru Crosstrek and its wheelbase is one inch longer. The four-door crossover SUV seats five passengers, though four would be more comfortable. The 2026 Trax offers 99.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, 25.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, and 54.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded. An optional collapsible, removable cargo organizer is available, and all 2026 Trax crossovers come with active noise cancellation.
The conventionally gasoline-powered 2026 Subaru Crosstrek trims feature a 2.5-liter four-cylinder “boxer” engine producing 180 hp and 178 pound-feet of torque. They send power through a CVT with standard AWD and dual drive modes that include hill descent control. Hybrid trims combine the 2.5-liter engine with electric motors and a high-capacity lithium-ion battery to provide a combined 194 hp.
The EPA rates the non-hybrid 2.5-liter-equipped 2026 Crosstreks at 29 mpg in combined driving, except for the Wilderness trim, whose off-road modifications result in a 26-mpg combined rating. The Crosstrek hybrids are the most fuel efficient, with an estimated 36 mpg combined.
Like the Chevy Trax, the Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover that seats up to five people. The Crosstrek and Trax are nearly identical in overall passenger volume. The non-hybrid Crosstrek provides 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat (20.0 for the Wilderness), while the hybrid trims reduce that to 18.6 cubic feet. When the rear seatbacks are lowered, the conventional Crosstreks offer 54.7 cubic feet of luggage space (54.9 for the Wilderness) compared with 50.6 in the hybrids.
Advantage: Subaru Crosstrek
Why? Even the base Crosstrek provides more horsepower than the Trax, and it comes with standard AWD and the option for a hybrid powertrain.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand new vehicle to include the following safety features:
So, how do the Trax and Crosstrek stack up? Let's take a look.
Despite its low price, the Chevrolet Trax provides a solid base of standard safety features. All 2026 trims come with Chevy Safety Assist, which adds automatic high-beam headlights and a following distance indicator to the previously mentioned list of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The Trax also features a standard rear seat reminder system and GM’s Teen Driver monitoring system. Optional ADAS include adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane centering assistance, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and rear park assist.
At the time of writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet given the 2026 Chevrolet Trax a five-star safety rating. The Trax received a Good rating in the small-overlap front test and a Poor rating in the updated moderate-overlap front test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Institute did not name the 2026 Trax a Top Safety Pick.
Every 2026 Subaru Crosstrek comes with standard EyeSight driver assistance technology, which includes almost all the ADAS listed at the top of this section. It also features ACC, lane centering assistance, automatic emergency steering, rear automatic braking, and a rear seat reminder. The DriverFocus distraction mitigation system, which uses facial recognition technology, is standard on Limited trims.
Currently, the NHTSA has not rated the 2026 Crosstrek’s crashworthiness. Meanwhile, the IIHS gave the 2026 Crosstrek Good ratings in two crashworthiness categories and a Marginal rating in the other. Still, the Institute did not name it a Top Safety Pick.
Advantage: Subaru Crosstrek
Why? The Crosstrek has more standard ADAS.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
Targeted at value-conscious buyers, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax features a tiered infotainment approach. LS, 1RS, and LT trims come with an 8-inch touchscreen, while the higher-end 2RS and Activ models get an 11-inch center display. Both configurations include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, voice control, a trial SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, and Bluetooth audio streaming that supports two devices at once. The higher trims also include an 8-inch digital driver information cluster and a six-speaker audio system.
The 2026 Trax allows buyers to connect with GM’s OnStar ecosystem through various subscription levels. Every owner gets OnStar Basics, which offers automatic crash response, stolen vehicle help, remote commands, on-demand diagnostics, and real-time vehicle status updates. It is free for the first eight years. A Wi-Fi hotspot is also available with a paid subscription.
Chevrolet equips the 2026 Trax with active noise cancellation on all trims. The system uses in-cabin microphones to detect persistent low frequency sounds and counter them via the audio system, reducing perceived cabin noise. The hardware remains consistent across trims, and there is no subscription fee for this feature.
The base 2026 Subaru Crosstrek features dual 7.0-inch touchscreens, with the upper screen dedicated to infotainment and the lower one for vehicle and climate controls. Most trims come with a more traditional 11.6-inch display along with six-speaker audio. This 11.6-inch screen adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the standard AM/FM/HD Radio and SiriusXM 360L with Travel Link. Hybrid models get upgrades with navigation and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Some trims also offer a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
Subaru equips every 2026 Crosstrek with access to Starlink Connected Services. This subscription-based telematics package includes SOS emergency assistance, automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle tracking, maintenance alerts, and vehicle health reports. Convenience features within the Starlink system include remote door lock/unlock, remote horn and light activation, and a vehicle locator. Subaru also offers a concierge tier that provides live assistance with navigation, reservations, and other trip planning needs.
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek introduces several features as standard across its trims. Valet Mode restricts vehicle performance and access controls for increased security when a valet is driving. Trip Logs automatically record driving details to help users monitor habits and improve fuel efficiency. Lastly, remote vehicle configuration enables drivers to customize settings such as climate control and seat positions via a smartphone app.
Advantage: Subaru Crosstrek
Why? The Crosstrek provides more advanced infotainment features.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax appeals to buyers seeking SUV aesthetics without the high price tag. It features a compact, easy-to-manage footprint, a traditional four-door hatchback design, and competitive cargo space. The powertrain, a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic, provides a level of refinement that CVT competitors often lack. It also includes an eight-year complimentary OnStar Basics package, active noise cancellation, and helpful onboard technology. The formula is simple: SUV-like capacity and appearance at an attractively low price.
But is it really a true SUV? Chevrolet’s decision to make every 2026 Trax FWD means there is no AWD option, even for the top-tier Activ and 2RS trims. The ride and steering are tuned for comfort, not sport, and the Trax does not offer much in off-road capability. If you need four-season traction, you will have to consider other options beyond the Trax’s generally attractive value.
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek approaches all-season versatility from a very different perspective. Subaru makes AWD standard on every trim, and even the base 2.5-liter boxer engine provides considerably more power than the Trax’s single engine option. The hybrid versions of the Subaru boost output to 194 hp and promise 36 mpg combined. However, not a dedicated off-roader, the Crosstrek’s AWD, hill descent control, and multiple drive modes combine to create a versatile little Swiss Army knife, capable of light to medium-duty off-road excursions.
In this comparison, the Crosstrek’s only major downside is its price. Its base MSRP starts several thousand dollars higher than the Trax, and unlike Chevy, Subaru does not include even one free scheduled maintenance visit. Its top trims come with useful features, and its hybrid trims offer excellent fuel economy, but they cost nearly $10,000 more than the highest-level Trax trims.
Advantage: Subaru Crosstrek
Why? If you can afford the Crosstrek, I would do it to enjoy benefits like its standard AWD and extra horsepower.
