When discussing SUVs, the phrase "size matters" often comes up. But that doesn't mean a smaller SUV—the type that is commonly available for less than $30,000—can't be an excellent buy. While even the best SUVs under $30K don't offer the roominess of larger, more expensive SUVs, they do offer surprising interior space and cargo area. In many cases, they also deliver excellent fuel economy along with a comprehensive list of standard electronic safety tech and advanced driver assistance systems.

Most SUVs under $30,000 share a chassis with a sedan or hatchback. However, despite their passenger-car underpinnings, they have higher rooflines and the typical "two-box" shape of an SUV. These "crossover SUVs" seat five adults comfortably with ample luggage space behind the rear seats. The rear seatbacks fold, usually in 60/40 spot fashion, to increase cargo room when necessary.

It is true that virtually all SUVs that cost less than $30K are smaller than their more costly cousins. Nevertheless, their compact size brings several advantages. They are more maneuverable than larger SUVs, are easier to park, and generally offer better fuel economy. Most would say they are more fun to drive, too.

With fun to drive being an essential component, in-vehicle technology is more critical for many buyers. It's no surprise that SUVs priced less than $30,000 are extremely popular with younger buyers. After all, this cohort loves apps and connectivity. To the great delight of Millennials everywhere, most SUVs that cost less than $30,000 have full-featured infotainment systems, large display screens, and sophisticated connectivity.

Because of their many advantages, less expensive SUVs are immensely favored by car buyers. This list of the best SUVs under $30,000 provides a great place to begin your search.
