2026 Tesla Model Y vs. 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Comparison

Jack R. Nerad | Apr 24, 2026

The Tesla Model Y posed a direct challenge to the world's established automakers. As an affordable crossover that happened to be battery-powered, it struck at the core of traditional car manufacturers. The crossover utility market is essentially the market itself. Like Broadway, with the right support, you can succeed anywhere. And that is exactly what the Tesla Model Y achieved. It became a global bestseller.

Credit to Hyundai for its quick and effective response. When the 2022 model year arrived, the Korean automaker introduced the Ioniq 5, a battery-electric crossover that competes closely with the Model Y in an almost uncanny way. When you look at all their features and details, these two SUVs have very similar capabilities.

In a comparison like this, nuance and personal taste make all the difference. The original Model Y offered a distinctive exterior; the Ioniq 5 saw Tesla and one-upped them. Hyundai also did a very inventive job of reusing its existing technology into packages that mimic Tesla's semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The two SUVs are among the best in the affordable battery-electric vehicle (BEV) segment. This comparison will help you choose yours.

Price and Value

The updated 2026 Tesla Model Y lineup offers five trims: Standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), Standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD), Premium RWD, Premium AWD, and Performance AWD, giving buyers a clear upgrade path from budget-friendly to high-performance choices. Starting at $41,630 for the base Standard RWD, prices go up to $59,130 for the top-tier Performance AWD. All prices include the $1,390 destination charge and a $250 order fee.

Tesla offers the 2026 Model Y with four years or 50,000 miles of roadside assistance but leaves the cost of scheduled maintenance up to the owner. Each new Model Y includes a 30-day trial of both Premium Connectivity and Full Self-Driving (Supervised). After the trials end, owners who want connectivity can continue with the free Standard Connectivity or choose a paid premium plan for extra features. Opting for Full Self-Driving after the trial is costly.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers six trim levels: SE Standard Range, SE, SEL, Limited, XRT, and the performance-oriented N. Hyundai offers both single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD options across all trims, except for the AWD-only XRT and N. The RWD SE Standard Range is the most affordable, starting at $36,600. At the top of the lineup, the XRT has a suggested list price of $47,875. At the time of writing, Hyundai has not yet announced pricing for the 2026 N trim. All prices include the $1,600 destination charge.

Hyundai is reportedly discontinuing its free scheduled maintenance program for the 2026 model year. The 2025 Ioniq 5 came with free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. Fortunately, Hyundai still offers Ioniq 5 owners complimentary roadside assistance for five years with no mileage limit. All 2026 Ioniq 5 crossovers include Hyundai BlueLink+ connected services, which provide a variety of remote, charging, and maintenance functions. These services are available to the original owner at no extra cost for the duration of ownership.

Advantage: Hyundai Ioniq 5

Why? The Ioniq 5 models are less expensive, and Hyundai offers free connectivity for a much longer period.

The Tesla Model Y does not rank among the top three models in the Compact Premium SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner reported problems after three years of ownership.

The Model Y also does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.

The Model Y ranks second among Premium Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in the 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study.

The 2026 Tesla Model Y comes with a standard four-year/50,000-mile warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery and drive unit.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 does not rank among the top three models in the Compact SUV segment in the 2026 VDS or the 2025 IQS. It also does not rank among the top three models in the Mass Market BEVs segment in the 2026 EVX Ownership Study. It offers a five-year/60,000-mile standard warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile EV powertrain and battery warranty.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The Model Y ranks among the top three models in its segment in the 2026 EVX Ownership Study, but the Ioniq 5 provides a longer standard warranty.

Performance, Efficiency, and Utility

2026 Tesla Model Y

The 2026 Tesla Model Y lineup includes four different powertrain options, but as is typical with Tesla, the company does not release official horsepower figures.

Range remains one of the Model Y’s strongest features. The Premium RWD gets an EPA-estimated 134 MPGe combined and can go up to 357 miles on a charge. The Premium AWD has a 123 MPGe rating and an estimated 327-mile range. The Standard RWD model delivers 138 MPGe with 18-inch wheels or 131 MPGe with 19-inch wheels. Meanwhile, the Performance AWD can travel 306 miles with an MPGe rating of 105.

For 2026, Tesla gave the Model Y a light refresh inside and out while streamlining its available configurations. The once-optional third-row seat is gone, leaving a two-row, five-passenger layout similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Its simple, straightforward interior offers plenty of space for occupants, and it provides 33.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 76 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers several powertrains, including RWD and AWD options. Hyundai equips the base SE Standard Range trim with a single-motor RWD system that produces 168 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Hyundai says its 63.0-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 20 minutes using a DC fast charger. Other RWD trims feature a 225-hp motor paired with an 84.0-kWh battery pack that achieves the same charge time. The AWD trims include a second motor and deliver a combined 320 hp. With its N Grin Boost feature, the N trim provides 641 hp and 568 pound-feet of torque.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range trim is EPA-rated at 115 MPGe combined, and the EPA estimates its total range on a charge at 245 miles. The RWD SE offers the highest range estimate, 318 miles, while the powerful N trim has the lowest at 221 miles.

The 2026 Ioniq 5 is a futuristically styled five-passenger crossover SUV that some might mistake for a hatchback. The base trim has cloth seats, while higher trims have synthetic leather seating surfaces. The Ioniq 5 provides the convenience of a rear hatch, and its 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat features a reclining backrest. The cargo area behind the rear seat measures a spacious 26.3 cubic feet, and when that seat back is folded, the cargo capacity increases to 58.5 cubic feet. The SUV's tiny front trunk, or “frunk,” is just 0.85 cubic feet.

Advantage: Tesla Model Y

Why? Most Tesla trims have longer range, and the Model Y is bigger with more cargo space.

Safety and Driving Assistance

At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand new vehicle to include the following safety features:

So, how do the Model Y and Ioniq 5 stack up? Let's take a look.

Tesla Motors relies on cutting-edge technology. Most versions of the 2026 Tesla Model Y include Autopilot, the brand’s signature driver assistance technology. On well marked highways, the system can perform lane changes and navigate freeway interchanges. The entry level Standard trim offers a simplified advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) suite with basic features like adaptive cruise control (ACC). The optional Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package provides autonomous driving on city streets, through intersections, and on and off highways.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2026 Tesla Model Y the highest possible five-star overall safety rating. As of this writing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not published safety ratings for the 2026 Model Y. However, the structurally similar 2025 model earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating for the 2025 calendar year.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5’s SmartSense suite offers a comprehensive suite of ADAS. In addition to the technologies mentioned at the beginning of this section, the SUV features rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, front and rear parking sensors, a driver monitoring system, safe exit assist, adaptive cruise control (ACC), a rear-seat reminder system, and highway driving assist (HDA). The higher priced trims include even more advanced systems, such as semi-autonomous highway driving with lane change capability, a surround view camera, intersection turn assistance, and rear automatic braking.

As of this writing, the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has not received an overall safety rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS has tested the 2026 Ioniq 5 and assigned it Good ratings in all crashworthiness categories. However, at the time of writing, the Institute has not awarded it with a Top Safety Pick+ designation as it did for the structurally similar 2025 model.

Advantage: Tesla Model Y

Why? The Model Y provides more advanced ADAS than those in the Ioniq 5.

Infotainment and Technology

Dominating the minimalist cabin of the 2026 Tesla Model Y, the 15.4-inch central touchscreen acts as the vehicle's control hub. It manages nearly every function, including climate control, navigation, entertainment, and vehicle information. The interface supports streaming from Spotify, Tidal, Netflix, and YouTube, along with Bluetooth and voice control, but, true to Tesla’s style, it still lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Subscribers to Tesla’s optional Premium Connectivity plan access additional features like live traffic updates, satellite view maps, and streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube. The system also provides “Caraoke” singing and a built-in web browser. Those who choose the Standard Connectivity plan keep basic features like navigation, music, and over-the-air (OTA) updates, but miss out on the more advanced digital perks.

In addition to its other features, Premium Connectivity also boosts security. With Sentry Mode turned on, the Model Y can spot suspicious activity, send alerts to the owner via the Tesla app, and automatically record a one-minute video. Owners can also view the vehicle's surroundings live in the app and receive instant alerts when an alarm sounds or when the SUV is left unlocked.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 features an impressive dashboard display that combines a 12.3-inch centrally mounted touchscreen infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument and driver information cluster. The user friendly infotainment system includes built-in navigation, dynamic “natural” voice recognition, Bluetooth for multiple devices, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, it offers AM/FM/HD Radio plus SiriusXM satellite radio with a three-month trial.

The Ioniq 5 includes Hyundai’s free BlueLink+ Basic package, which provides essential connected services like automatic collision notification, SOS assistance, and a vehicle locator. Buyers also get the BlueLink+ Advanced package at no charge, offering roadside assistance, stolen vehicle tracking, collision alerts, and OTA software updates. Remote Charge Access makes recharging convenient while on the move.

All 2026 Ioniq 5s come with Hyundai Pay, enabling drivers to make transactions for EV charging or parking directly from the car's touchscreen or through voice commands. By linking a credit card via the MyHyundai app, owners can securely pay as they travel, without needing a wallet or smartphone.

Advantage: Neither

Why? It is the driver’s choice here. Do you prefer conventional infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, or are you intrigued by the Model Y’s unique infotainment system?

Independent Expert Opinion

2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited Interior Dashboard

2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited

For 2026, the Tesla Model Y remains one of the most appealing EVs on the market, thanks to its combination of extensive driving range, quick acceleration, and advanced technology. Its updated styling and simplified interior create a cleaner, more modern look, while its spacious two-row cabin and ample cargo space make it genuinely practical for families. Tesla’s strong charging network and regular OTA updates further enhance its attractiveness. Additionally, the Model Y’s ADAS continues to set standards for semi-autonomous driving.

Still, the Model Y has its drawbacks. The stark, buttonless interior can feel cold to those used to more tactile controls, and the absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remains a sore spot. Ride comfort can be firm, especially with larger wheels, and build quality has shown inconsistency. Tesla's limited-service network also has its disadvantages. The ownership experience can feel as unconventional as the car itself, but overall, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

When Hyundai launched the Ioniq 5 for the 2022 model year, it targeted the American market directly. A spacious crossover with a practical footprint, a long wheelbase, and ample interior space, Hyundai's BEV quickly received praise from critics. Its 800-volt electric architecture, which allows it to reach an 80-percent charge in under 20 minutes, also distinguishes it from competing EVs made by other mainstream brands.

In past years, one of the Tesla Model Y's advantages over the Ioniq 5 was the option of three-row seating. However, Tesla removed that option for 2026, so now both crossovers seat five passengers. The longer Model Y provides more cargo space behind the second row and an inch more of rear-seat legroom. Overall, it is impressive how closely the Ioniq 5 compares to the Model Y, making the decision almost a coin flip.

Advantage: Neither

Why? Do you prefer the looks of the Model Y or the Ioniq 5? If you want to keep some traditional features, like instruments in front of you, the Ioniq is the better choice. Technology enthusiasts will lean toward the Model Y.
