An electric compact luxury sedan, the new 2027 BMW i3 boasts an estimated range of up to 440 miles, 400-kilowatt (kW) DC fast charging capability, and bidirectional charging to a home or the grid. Next-generation technology includes a BMW Panoramic Vision display stretching across the entire dashboard, an Amazon Alexa-based generative AI digital assistant, and BMW Symbiotic Drive driver assistance. The 2027 i3 is also the second BMW model to wear the automaker’s tautly penned Neue Klasse design language, following the iX3 crossover SUV.

If you do not want an electric 3 Series, do not fret about the new i3. A redesigned, gasoline-fueled 3 Series is coming soon. It will have similar styling to the i3, just as the latest BMW i4 looked almost identical to the 4 Series Gran Coupe. However, its underlying guts promise a familiar driving experience, with 48-volt mild hybrid technology applied to turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines.
If you do want an electric BMW 3 Series, well, here it is. BMW says it will launch in i3 50 xDrive specification, a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version with 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque.
This technologically sophisticated automobile uses an 800-volt architecture compatible with DC fast charging stations up to 400 kW. The battery pack is a structural element of the car, and it contains new cylindrical battery cells with improved energy density, contributing to a BMW-estimated 440 miles of maximum driving range.
A North American Charging Standard (NACS) port provides broad access to public chargers, including Tesla Superchargers, and the Plug & Charge technology simplifies payment. The i3 also offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) bidirectional charging capability.

Inside, the new i3 features a BMW Operating System X software platform that powers the car’s BMW Panoramic iDrive technology. In addition to an asymmetrical 17.9-inch center touchscreen, it includes a BMW Panoramic Vision display stretching across the car from one windshield pillar to the other (see the photo above). That sounds excessive, but this display is a thin strip instead of the taller screens found in modern Lincolns.
BMW has integrated plenty of AI into the new i3, governing everything from how the charging port door opens to how the Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) operate. The car’s BMW Personal Assistant incorporates large language model (LLM) generative AI technology for a more conversational, context-sensitive experience.
Shy Tech controls on the steering wheel are hidden from view until you touch them; based on my experience with similar technology in Lincolns, that creates unnecessary distraction. Hopefully, the 3D head-up display that projects data onto the windshield will reduce it.
New BMW Symbiotic Drive technology uses AI to let a driver brake or steer without deactivating the available semi-autonomous driving aids, providing a more natural man-machine driving experience.

Electric luxury sedans are uncommon in the U.S. market, but that does not mean the new BMW i3 will not face much competition.
Audi offers the A6 Sportback E-tron, and Mercedes-Benz currently sells electric CLA and EQE sedans, with an Electric C-Class coming soon. Lexus recently introduced a redesigned ES with an electric powertrain, and BMW must convince people considering a Tesla Model 3 that the new i3 is the better choice.
On paper, the BMW i3 appears to have what it takes to succeed. It remains to be seen, however, whether waning interest in electric vehicles and backlash against AI will make it harder for BMW to carve out a profitable piece of the electric luxury sedan pie.
