2026 Tesla Model Y vs. 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV Comparison

Jack R. Nerad | Apr 03, 2026

The 2026 Tesla Model Y and the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV approach the electric crossover SUV from different angles. Yet they meet as two of the most important mass-market electric vehicles (EVs) of the decade. Tesla’s top-seller enters 2026 as a more refined, mature version of itself. Subtle styling updates give it a sleeker appearance, while its open, two-row cabin and spacious cargo area make it practical for families and commuters alike.

The Equinox EV is also groundbreaking, but in a different way. It guides Chevrolet's century-old division in a completely new direction. Using General Motors' proprietary Ultium battery technology, it offers up to 319 miles of range—impressive for a vehicle starting near $37,000. To its credit, it doesn't compete with Tesla's headline-making acceleration, but focuses on the features that matter most to SUV buyers: interior space, affordability, and everyday usability.

These two EVs differ as much philosophically as they do mechanically. Tesla's minimalist, screen-only interior may impress tech enthusiasts but frustrate those who crave tactile controls, while Chevy's more traditional setup might feel familiar. Interestingly, in this Age of the Smartphone, neither vehicle includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone mirroring—an omission sure to raise eyebrows.

Which of these battery-powered crossover EVs is best for your household? This comparison will provide the answers you need.

Price and Value

For 2026, Tesla introduces a new entry-level Model Y and renames other models in the lineup. The updated structure now includes five trim levels: Standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), Standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD), Premium RWD, Premium AWD, and Performance AWD. Prices start at $41,630 for the Standard RWD and go up to $59,130 for the base Performance AWD. All prices include the $1,390 destination charge and a $250 order fee.

Every 2026 Model Y comes with a four-year/50,000-mile roadside assistance plan, but routine maintenance isn’t included for free. Tesla offers a 30-day trial of both Premium Connectivity and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on new vehicles. After the trial, drivers can choose to keep the free Standard Connectivity or upgrade to Premium Connectivity. Maintaining Full Self-Driving after the trial period requires a considerable additional cost.

The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV offers buyers three somewhat confusingly named trim options: LT1, LT2, and RS. Customers can choose between front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) versions of each trim. The FWD LT1 is the most affordable, with a starting price of $36,795. At the higher end, the FWD RS model starts at $45,895. All prices include the $1,800 destination charge.

Chevy offers Equinox EV buyers roadside assistance for five years or 60,000 miles, and tow coverage for eight years or 100,000 miles. The first scheduled service visit is also free, and customers can receive three years of OnStar One connected services, which includes a voice assistant, navigation, and crash response, among other features.

Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox EV

Why? The Equinox EV offers a price advantage over the Model Y.

Reliability and Quality

The Tesla Model Y does not rank among the top three models in the Compact Premium SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner-reported problems after three years of ownership.

The Model Y also does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.

The Model Y ranks second among Premium Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in the 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study.

The 2026 Tesla Model Y comes with a standard four-year/50,000-mile warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery and drive unit.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the 2026 VDS or the 2025 IQS. It also does not rank among the leaders in the Mass Market BEV segment in the 2026 EVX Ownership Study. The Equinox EV provides a basic limited warranty of three years/36,000 miles, a powertrain warranty of five years/60,000 miles, and an electrical components warranty of eight years/100,000 miles.

Advantage: Tesla Model Y

Why? The Model Y ranks among the top performers in the 2026 EVX Ownership Study and offers a better standard warranty.

Performance, Efficiency, and Utility

2026 Tesla Model Y

The 2026 Tesla Model Y lineup features four different powertrains, each offering a unique mix of performance and efficiency. However, true to Tesla’s style, the company remains tight-lipped about exact horsepower numbers.

Range remains a key strength for the Model Y. The Premium RWD trim leads with up to 357 miles of range on a full charge and an EPA-estimated 134 MPGe combined. The Premium AWD follows with 327 miles of range and a 123 MPGe rating. The Standard RWD delivers 138 MPGe combined, while Performance AWD models are rated at 105 MPGe with a maximum range of 306 miles. Tesla claims the Model Y can add as much as 182 miles of range in 15 minutes at one of its Superchargers.

For 2026, Tesla gives the Model Y a subtle design update, a revised trim lineup, and a new, more affordable entry-level model. As part of the refresh, Tesla removed the Model Y’s optional third row, simplifying the layout to a two-row, five-passenger configuration that now more directly competes with compact electric crossovers like the Chevrolet Equinox EV. Inside, the cabin remains spacious and practical, with 33.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 76 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded flat.

Chevrolet provides buyers of the 2026 Equinox EV with two drivetrain options. The FWD models feature a 220-horsepower motor, while the AWD versions include a second motor that powers the rear wheels, increasing total output to 300 hp. Chevrolet states that using a DC fast charger at up to 150 kilowatts (kW), the Equinox EV can gain up to 77 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.

The FWD Equinox EV models are EPA-rated at 108 MPGe with a range of 319 miles on a charge. The top-rated AWD trims achieve 103 MPGe with a 307-mile range.

The Equinox EV is a five-passenger compact crossover SUV with a spacious and high-tech interior. All 2026 Equinox EV trims except the budget-friendly LT1 offer an eight-way power driver’s seat, and all come with a fold-flat 60/40 split rear seat. The Equinox EV provides 26.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. When the second row is folded down, the cargo capacity increases to 57.2 cubic feet.

Advantage: Tesla Model Y

Why? The Tesla offers advantages in range, charging speed, and cargo capacity.

Safety and Driving Assistance

At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand-new vehicle to include the following safety features:

So, how do the Model Y and Equinox EV stack up? Let's take a look.

Tesla’s reputation continues to depend on its ongoing pursuit of innovative technology, and the 2026 Model Y enhances that legacy. Most versions come equipped with standard Autopilot, the company's advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) suite. Its features include managing lane changes and navigating freeway interchanges on well-marked roads. The affordable new Standard RWD trim offers a more limited set of core safety and ADAS functions.

For those seeking the full range of Tesla’s semi-autonomous features, the optional Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package, available on multiple trims, expands the vehicle’s automated functions to include driving on city streets, through intersections, and on highway on- and off-ramps.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2026 Tesla Model Y the highest possible five-star overall safety rating. As of this writing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn’t published safety ratings for the 2026 Model Y. However, the structurally similar 2025 model earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating for the 2025 calendar year.

The ADAS lineup in the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV includes all the systems mentioned at the top of this section, as well as many more. Standard Chevy Safety Assist covers the essentials and adds a following-distance indicator. The extensive ADAS features also include adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic braking, blind-spot steering assist, rear automatic braking, rear parking assist, a Safety Alert Seat, traffic-sign recognition, and rear pedestrian warning.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV also offers the option of GM's Super Cruise semi-automated driving system. Available on hundreds of thousands of miles of highways, Super Cruise includes both automatic and driver-initiated lane changes and can be used while towing.

The NHTSA gave the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV a five-star overall safety rating. At the time of writing, the IIHS has not issued safety ratings for the 2026 Equinox EV.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The Equinox EV is one of the few vehicles that can compete with the Model Y in safety ratings and advanced ADAS.

Infotainment and Technology

The dominant feature of the 2026 Tesla Model Y's minimalist cabin is a 15.4-inch touchscreen. This single-pane glass display acts as the vehicle’s main brain, control hub, and entertainment center. Almost every function relies on this screen, from adjusting climate settings to planning navigation routes and streaming music. Media options include Spotify, Tidal, Netflix, and YouTube, all accessible via touch or voice commands. Consistent with Tesla’s innovative approach, the system omits both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Choosing Tesla's Premium Connectivity plan unlocks the system's full potential, adding real-time traffic visualization, satellite imagery, and access to Netflix and YouTube. It also enables Tesla's sing-along feature and includes a built-in web browser. Those sticking with the free Standard Connectivity package still get the essentials but will miss out on the extra features of the paid tier.

With Premium Connectivity’s Sentry Mode, the Model Y acts as a digital watchdog, detecting suspicious movement and alerting the owner through the Tesla app. The system records a one-minute video clip of any incidents, while live camera access lets owners check remotely. If someone tampers with the vehicle—or even forgets to lock it—an alert appears on the app, highlighting the brand’s ability to blend technology and showmanship.

The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV features a Google Built-in infotainment system with a large 17.7-inch touchscreen display. The system provides navigation, natural voice recognition, and a three-year trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. A Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone charging are available on all trims, and the LT2 and RS models offer a head-up display. Smartphone users might be disappointed to learn the Equinox EV does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

All 2026 Equinox EV trims include OnStar Basics, offering remote commands, real-time traffic updates, navigation, voice assistance, and automatic crash response. More advanced OnStar tiers are also available, including OnStar One, which provides streaming music, podcasts, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an internet browser. The myChevrolet mobile app gives access to over 250,000 public EV chargers.

The Equinox EV’s available OnStar Super Cruise is a hands-free driver-assistance system offered by subscription. It allows drivers to travel on more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads without touching the steering wheel. The system can perform turn signal-activated lane changes, automatically pass slower traffic, and adjust following distance when towing a trailer.

Advantage: Neither

Why? Both models have infotainment systems packed with features, but neither includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Independent Expert Opinion

2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV RS

For 2026, the Tesla Model Y remains one of the most well-rounded EVs on the road, combining performance, range, and innovation. The recent exterior and interior updates sharpen its design. The result is a sleeker, more mature evolution of Tesla’s best-seller. Its spacious two-row layout and ample cargo area make it just as suitable for groceries as for long road trips. When paired with Tesla’s Supercharger network, the Model Y continues to lead the EV market.

Still, the Model Y has its quirks. The stark, button-and-knob-free interior can feel more like a laboratory than a living room, and the absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continues to irk smartphone-centric drivers. Tesla’s limited service network can also make basic maintenance a logistical challenge.

Unlike some other domestic carmakers, GM dove into the EV market headfirst. It developed its own battery-electric technology, called Ultium, and designed and built its own EV platforms. One of the key results is the Chevrolet Equinox EV, which is among the least expensive battery-electric SUVs available. While the Chevy doesn't match the dazzling acceleration of some competitors, its 319 miles of range per charge and an entry price of less than $37,000 make it an impressive option.

In a segment where some manufacturers seem to have forgotten the main purpose of an SUV, which is to carry a diverse mix of people and their belongings, the Equinox EV has stayed true to that goal. The Equinox EV provides space for five adults, plenty of cargo room, and a huge touchscreen. For some, the absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto might be a deal-breaker, but overall, the Equinox EV has gotten many things right.

Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox EV

Why? The Equinox EV’s price is its biggest draw; it provides excellent range and utility for the cost.
