2026 Lexus NX vs. 2026 BMW X3 Comparison

Jack R. Nerad | Apr 10, 2026

In the world of compact luxury SUVs, two models consistently attract buyers: the Lexus NX and the BMW X3. Both provide seating for five, upscale features, and a reputation for quality. However, they have several differences that can make one a better fit for you than the other.

Lexus helped define the luxury crossover segment with the RX, and the NX follows closely behind, but with a more compact, urban-oriented design. With a variety of powertrains, including turbocharged, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options, the NX appeals to a diverse group of affluent buyers. It’s also one of the few in its class still offering front-wheel drive (FWD), which is rare in a segment now mostly dominated by all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles.

BMW, on the other hand, emphasizes performance driving dynamics with the X3. Even in its base 30 xDrive configuration, it provides a refined, engaging drive, while the M50 xDrive trim amps up the excitement with serious power. The X3 is also larger than the NX and offers more cargo space, while the NX has a more city-oriented footprint.

At a glance, both SUVs share similar features: upscale interiors, advanced safety technology, and a badge that indicates luxury. Which one is the better choice? That depends on what you prioritize most. The NX and X3 appeal to different instincts, and understanding their differences can help you make a smarter decision. Keep reading for a side-by-side comparison to help you decide which SUV belongs in your driveway.

Price and Value

The 2026 Lexus NX offers four trim levels: Base, Premium, Luxury, and F SPORT Handling. Three distinct powertrains are available: conventional (350), hybrid (350h), and plug-in hybrid (450h+). The base NX 350h, a FWD hybrid, is the lowest-priced NX at $46,070. The lowest-priced non-hybrid—the NX 350 AWD—starts at a suggested $46,720. The top-tier model is the NX 450h+ F SPORT Handling AWD, with a starting price of $64,425. All prices include the $1,295 destination charge.

Lexus offers all 2026 NX buyers four years of free roadside assistance with no mileage restrictions. LexusCare covers the first two scheduled maintenance services at no charge. Buyers also get a free trial of Lexus Drive Connect, which includes remote functions, emergency services, navigation support, and service reminders. Additionally, Lexus Wi-Fi Connect provides hotspot capability with a 30-day/3-gigabyte free trial.

The 2026 BMW X3 offers two trim options: 30 xDrive and M50 xDrive. Both come with AWD. The turbocharged four-cylinder 30 xDrive is the more affordable choice, starting at $52,650. The performance-tuned M50 xDrive, equipped with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, has a starting price of $67,850. All prices include the $1,350 destination charge.

BMW offers buyers four years of roadside assistance with no mileage limits, along with free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles through its BMW Ultimate Care program. Complimentary connectivity features include Remote Services, which allow owners to unlock doors and locate their vehicles remotely. The BMW Digital Premium package, available for a three-month trial, provides enhanced navigation with real-time data, in-car app access, and expanded voice control via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Advantage: Lexus NX

Why? The NX lineup is less expensive top to bottom, but the NX is also a smaller vehicle than the X3.

Reliability and Quality

The Lexus NX does not rank among the top three models in the Compact Premium SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner-reported problems after three years of ownership.

The NX ranks second in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.

The 2026 Lexus NX comes with a standard warranty of four years or 50,000 miles, and a powertrain warranty of six years or 70,000 miles.

The BMW X3 does not rank among the top three models in its segment in either the 2026 VDS or the 2025 IQS. It provides four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranties.

Advantage: Lexus NX

Why? The NX is second in its segment in initial quality and offers a longer powertrain warranty.

Performance, Efficiency, and Utility

2026 Lexus NX 350

For the 2026 model year, the Lexus NX provides three main powertrain choices. The NX 350 models are equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The 350h, available in both FWD and AWD configurations, features a hybrid powertrain with a combined output of 240 hp. Meanwhile, the 450h+ trims feature a plug-in hybrid system that generates 304 hp and 169 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, the 450h+ models can travel up to 37 miles on electric power alone.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the FWD NX 350h at 40 mpg combined, while the AWD version is expected to reach 39 mpg. The AWD-only NX 350 trims have a combined rating of 24 mpg. As of now, the EPA has not rated the 2026 NX 450h+ PHEV, but Lexus estimates its combined efficiency at 84 MPGe.

Overall, the five-passenger Lexus NX is nearly 4 inches shorter than the BMW X3, resulting in less interior and cargo space. The Lexus SUV offers 22.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, which expands to 46.9 cubic feet with the seats folded down. It comes with a standard power-operated rear liftgate, and the higher trims include a kick sensor.

The 2026 BMW X3 offers two engine options, each paired with a specific trim. The 30 xDrive comes equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. The M50 xDrive features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine delivering 393 hp and 428 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains incorporate mild-hybrid technology, and both trims come standard with AWD.

According to the EPA, the 30 xDrive leads the X3 lineup in fuel economy with a combined rating of 29 mpg. Its powerful 3.0-liter engine allows the M50 xDrive to achieve 27 mpg.

The X3 is a five-passenger luxury crossover SUV with a cabin that offers space comparable to that of the Lexus NX. However, its cargo area—31.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 67.1 cubic feet with the second row folded—is significantly larger than the NX's and also exceeds the Lexus RX's cargo capacity.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The NX provides more powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid, whereas the X3 has the highest horsepower engine and more cargo space.

Safety and Driving Assistance

At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand-new vehicle to include the following safety features:

So, how do the NX and X3 stack up? Let's take a look.

The 2026 Lexus NX offers a comprehensive set of standard advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) within the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 (LSS+ 3.0). While blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included in LSS+ 3.0, they are standard on all 2026 NX trims.

In addition to the typical ADAS features, the NX comes with adaptive cruise control (ACC) that includes navigation-assisted Curve Speed Management, lane-centering assistance, and automatic emergency steering with braking assist. A surround-view camera system, front cross-traffic warning, lane-change assist, and active parking assistance are optional features.

As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not published an overall safety rating for the 2026 Lexus NX. Meanwhile, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2026 NX a Top Safety Pick+ for the 2025 calendar year—its highest honor. As of now, the Institute has not carried that distinction forward for 2026.

The 2026 BMW X3 offers a wide range of ADAS, including some highly advanced systems, but many features are available only in optional packages rather than as standard equipment. In addition to the systems listed at the beginning of this section, the optional Driving Assistant Professional package combines ACC with stop-and-go capability, lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance, lane-change assist, and active blind-spot warning to make highway driving easier. The X3 also provides options for a head-up display and a surround-view camera system.

The NHTSA gave the 2026 BMW X3 a four-star overall safety rating in its five-star safety rating program, and the IIHS awarded the 2026 X3 a Top Safety Pick+ designation for 2025. No word yet on whether that award will extend to calendar year 2026.

Advantage: Neither

Why? Both crossover SUVs offer strong ADAS.

Infotainment and Technology

The 2026 Lexus NX features the internally developed Lexus Interface infotainment system. All trims except the 450h+ models are equipped with a 9.8-inch touchscreen display, with an optional upgrade to a 14-inch touchscreen. The 450h+ trims all have the larger 14-inch screen. The NX's infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, Bluetooth connectivity, and a three-month trial of SiriusXM Platinum satellite radio. The top trims come with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system.

The 2026 Lexus NX features a comprehensive suite of connected services. Remote Connect allows you to start the engine remotely, lock doors, and check vehicle status using a smartphone. Wi-Fi Connect transforms the NX into a hotspot for up to five devices. Safety Connect provides 24/7 emergency assistance via an onboard SOS button, while Service Connect offers continuous vehicle health monitoring. These services come with complimentary trial subscriptions of up to five years.

The NX offers a range of premium connectivity features. Cloud navigation provides real-time, data-driven route guidance, and destination assist connects drivers with live agents who can send directions directly to the system. User profiles let drivers customize audio, navigation, and language settings through the Lexus app, while the intelligent assistant responds to voice commands to control climate, navigation, and audio functions.

The 2026 BMW X3 features BMW Operating System 9, which can be controlled via touch, voice commands, and the console-mounted iDrive controller. Its BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen that handles navigation, media, and vehicle settings. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a one-year SiriusXM 360L trial. The system also offers voice control for various in-car functions. BMW offers an optional 15-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system.

The 2026 X3 offers a wide array of connected features focused on the My BMW app, which supports remote locking, vehicle location, light and horn activation, and cabin preconditioning. The optional BMW Digital Premium package includes real-time navigation updates, in-car apps, gaming, and an upgraded personal assistant. The system also allows for over-the-air software updates, service diagnostics, and roadside assistance.

BMW X3 buyers can equip their SUVs with Parking Assistant Professional. This system can automatically steer the vehicle into parking spaces without driver input, and the driver can control the process from outside by smartphone. The system includes a parking view to assist with manual parking, and the My BMW app can display real-time images of the vehicle’s surroundings. The optional system also features a drive recorder and an anti-theft recorder.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The infotainment options aren't identical, but they are similar.

Independent Expert Opinion

For decades, the Lexus brand has been a strong advocate of luxury crossover SUVs. They arguably invented the genre with the RX, and later added the NX as a smaller, five-passenger premium SUV. Nowadays, 9 inches separate the two Lexus models in overall length, and, naturally, the RX is more spacious than the NX. However, the NX provides a good experience for both drivers and passengers.

One of the NX's notable features is its choice of turbocharged, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid powertrains. Interestingly, its hybrid trims are the only ones that provide FWD, while the rest of the lineup is AWD-only. Equipped with the 304-hp PHEV powertrain, the NX is more lively than you might expect from a Lexus, but even in F SPORT Handling trim, it doesn't match the BMW X3 M50 xDrive, which has significantly more horsepower.

BMW engineers achieved a challenging feat with the current-generation X3. They designed a vehicle that ticks all the boxes for a luxury crossover—five-passenger capacity, ample cargo space, flexible seating, strong safety features—while maintaining that BMW feel. Compared to most rivals in its class, the X3 handles better and feels more lively. It delivers a satisfying drive in 30 xDrive form and exceeds expectations significantly in the sporty M50 xDrive version.

The typical compact luxury SUV buyer won't push the X3 to its limits, but behind the wheel, they'll notice the difference over some of the segment's lesser options. The comparison isn't entirely fair because the X3 is simply larger, but it would be my pick between these two.

Advantage: BMW X3

Why? Bigger and brawnier, the X3 is the top choice.
