In an era where affordability is key, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax and 2026 Chevrolet Equinox are likely to catch the eye of today’s crossover SUV buyers due to their relatively low prices and wide range of features. The two models occupy adjacent but clearly different positions in Chevrolet’s crossover lineup, targeting buyers with different preferences for price, size, and capability. Although both are five-passenger SUVs sharing the same brand DNA, they differ in size, powertrain, and overall purpose.
The Trax functions as Chevrolet’s entry level crossover, available exclusively with front-wheel drive (FWD) and powered by a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. It focuses on affordability and efficiency, with pricing significantly lower than the Equinox and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy ratings reaching up to 30 mpg combined. Despite its subcompact size, the Trax maximizes passenger space and offers competitive cargo capacity. For buyers looking to enter the crossover SUV market, it is a solid option.
The Equinox offers potential crossover buyers more interior and cargo space, along with a broader range of capabilities, at a higher price. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and the SUV is available with either FWD or optional all-wheel drive (AWD). The Equinox also features selectable drive modes, light trailering capability, and a wider array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Technology is a key focus, with standard Google Built-in infotainment.
Both Chevy SUVs offer similar warranty coverage, complimentary roadside assistance, and access to General Motors’ (GM) OnStar system. The Trax and Equinox together demonstrate Chevrolet’s tiered strategy for the crossover segment. This comparison will help you decide which one might be right for you.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
For 2026, the Chevrolet Trax is available in five trim levels: LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ. Every Trax comes standard with FWD; no AWD option is offered on any trim. Pricing begins at $23,495 for the LS and increases to $27,195 for the Activ and 2RS, which share the same top-end price. All prices include the $1,795 destination charge.
Chevrolet includes five years or 60,000 miles of roadside assistance with every 2026 Trax, along with one free scheduled maintenance visit within the first 12,000 miles. All trims also include access to GM’s OnStar connected services. The standard OnStar Basics package is provided at no additional cost for eight years and includes stolen vehicle assistance, automatic crash response, and remote vehicle access. Additional connected services are available through paid subscriptions.
The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox is priced higher than the Trax, reflecting its larger size and greater capabilities. Chevrolet offers the Equinox in three conventional trims: LT, RS, and Activ. Front-wheel drive is standard, with AWD available across the lineup. Pricing starts at $30,795 for the FWD LT trim. The FWD versions of the RS and Activ trims both begin at $35,595. Chevrolet also offers a battery-electric version of the Equinox, but it is essentially a different model. All prices include the $1,995 destination charge.
Like the Trax, the Equinox includes five years or 60,000 miles of roadside assistance and one complimentary maintenance visit. OnStar Basics connected services are included for eight years, providing essential safety and remote features. Chevrolet’s Mobile Service program is available for the Equinox, offering options such as pickup and delivery, at-home service, and loaner vehicles, depending on dealer participation.
Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox
Why? Although it costs significantly more, the Equinox justifies its higher price with available AWD, a more powerful engine, and noticeably more space.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox Activ
The Chevrolet Trax does not rank among the top three models in the Small SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner reported problems after three years of ownership.
The Trax also does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax comes with a standard warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles.
The Chevrolet Equinox ranks highest in the Compact SUV segment in the 2026 VDS. It does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the 2025 IQS. Its warranty coverage is the same as the Trax.
Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox
Why? The Equinox leads its segment in vehicle dependability.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
For 2026, the Chevrolet Trax has a single powertrain option: a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that delivers 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Power is directed to the front wheels via a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly fast, the Trax offers enough performance for commuting and city driving.
Fuel economy is a strong point for the Trax. The EPA estimates that gasoline-only Trax models achieve 29 mpg combined, while flex-fuel versions achieve 30 mpg combined on gasoline and 22 mpg combined on E85.
Dimensionally, the Trax is a subcompact crossover with a longer wheelbase for its class, enhancing interior space. Meanwhile, the Equinox, considered a compact crossover, is longer, wider, and taller. Both SUVs accommodate five passengers. The Trax provides 25.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 54.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.
The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox significantly surpasses the Trax in both power and size. It features a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 175 hp. Torque varies by drivetrain, with FWD versions rated at 184 pound-feet and AWD models at up to 203 pound-feet. Front-wheel-drive Equinox models are equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while AWD models have an eight-speed automatic. For 2026, all trims come with selectable drive modes.
The most fuel efficient conventionally powered 2026 Equinox models come with FWD. They are EPA-rated at 27 mpg combined. The gasoline-powered AWD versions are rated at 26 mpg combined. For comparison, the battery-electric Equinox EV, which is a completely different model, has a maximum EPA rating of 108 MPGe.
The Equinox is significantly larger than the Trax, featuring a longer wheelbase, greater overall length, and a wider stance. This results in more passenger space and increased cargo capacity. Cargo volume is 29.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat and expands to 63.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The Equinox also provides light towing capability, rated at up to 1,500 pounds when equipped with AWD.
Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox
Why? Because it offers more cargo space, available AWD, and lightweight trailering capability, the Equinox is more practical than the Trax.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox Activ
At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand new vehicle to include the following safety features:
So, how do the Trax and Equinox stack up? Let's take a look.
Despite its affordable price, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax offers a notable array of standard ADAS. All trims include Chevy Safety Assist, which combines many of the active safety features listed earlier with automatic high-beam headlights and a following distance indicator. A rear seat reminder and GM’s Teen Driver system are also standard. At the same time, optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane centering assistance, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and park assist.
As of now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet issued a safety rating for the 2026 Trax. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, the Trax received a Good score in the small-overlap front crash test but scored Poor in the updated moderate-overlap front test. Consequently, the Trax does not qualify for an IIHS Top Safety Pick in 2026.
The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox builds on the same ADAS foundation as its smaller sibling, with additional driver assistance features available depending on the trim level and options chosen. In addition to the systems mentioned earlier in this section, standard features include a Safety Alert Seat, ACC, rear cross-traffic braking, rear automatic braking, front and side bicyclist detection, and intersection automatic emergency braking. Traffic sign recognition, a surround view camera system, and rear pedestrian detection are available options.
As of this writing, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has rated the crashworthiness of the conventionally powered 2026 Chevrolet Equinox.
Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox
Why? The Equinox provides a wider selection of driver assistance features and upgraded hardware.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offers shoppers two infotainment screen sizes. The LS, 1RS, and LT trims feature an 8-inch center touchscreen, while the 2RS and Activ trims upgrade to an 11-inch display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are standard across all trims, along with Bluetooth connectivity and a trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. Buyers of higher trim levels also benefit from an 8-inch digital driver information display and a six-speaker audio system.
Every 2026 Trax is connected to GM’s OnStar ecosystem, which offers multiple subscription levels. All trims include the free OnStar Basics package for eight years. It provides automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance, remote commands, on-demand diagnostics, and real-time vehicle status alerts. Additional services, such as an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, are available through paid subscriptions.
Active noise cancellation is standard on the 2026 Trax lineup. Using microphones inside the cabin, the system detects low-frequency engine and road noise and plays counteracting sound waves through the audio system to help create a quieter interior. The feature works automatically and offers a more refined driving experience than the Trax’s entry level price might imply.
The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox emphasizes in-car technology. Standard features include an infotainment system powered by Google Built-in, featuring an 11.3-inch center touchscreen and an 11-inch digital driver information display. The system offers integration with Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play, and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SiriusXM is also available.
The 2026 Equinox also connects with GM’s OnStar system, offering multiple levels of connectivity. Every Equinox buyer gets a basic set of OnStar services free for eight years, including automatic crash response and remote vehicle commands. The Equinox also features Google Maps, Google Assistant, Alexa Built-In, Maps+ online mapping, and Waze real-time traffic updates, while a Wi-Fi hotspot is available via subscription.
Google Automotive Services come standard across the 2026 Equinox lineup, offering built-in access to familiar Google apps as described above. However, the system also has room to grow. In the future, Chevrolet states that the platform will add predictive intelligence features that learn driver habits and preferences, enabling functions such as automatic climate adjustments and proactive route suggestions without driver prompts.
Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox
Why? The Trax provides commendable infotainment, but the Equinox system is superior.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox Activ
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offers a lot for a little. Even at its low base price, it includes well-rounded infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard Chevy Safety Assist, active noise cancellation, and eight years of complimentary OnStar Basics. Fuel economy is a strong point at up to 30 mpg combined, and buyers will get more passenger and cargo space than they might expect. The Chevy Trax is a practical and affordable entry into the crossover market.
The Trax’s drawbacks mirror its budget price. All trims are FWD only, performance is modest, there is just one engine option, and several desirable ADAS are optional. It does not qualify for an IIHS Top Safety Pick award, lacks a NHTSA rating so far, and does not rank among the top three models in its segment in recent JD Power studies focused on initial quality and vehicle dependability.
The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox offers more space, power, and capability than the Trax. Its turbocharged 1.5-liter engine is more powerful, AWD is an option, and cargo capacity is considerably larger. Technology is another key feature, with standard Google Built-in infotainment, large dual screens, a wider range of advanced safety features, and light trailering capability.
The Equinox’s higher price is its biggest downside compared to its sibling, especially in AWD trims, and its fuel economy falls short of the smaller Trax's as well. The two crossovers offer the same warranty coverage. Urban dwellers might find the Equinox’s size less practical than the Trax.
Advantage: Chevrolet Equinox
Why? If you can afford the Equinox’s higher price, it is a better choice than the Trax.
