The Chevrolet Trax and Honda HR-V stand out in the small SUV market because they combine crossover-style interior and cargo versatility with a compact, easy-to-maneuver size. Factually, vehicles like the Trax and HR-V do not offer much more utility than a hatchback, but in a market eager for SUV-like vehicles, their looks and overall usefulness give them extra appeal.
The Trax lacks all-wheel drive (AWD) but qualifies as a subcompact SUV because of its upright stance and squared-off body. The HR-V offers optional AWD, but most trim levels have a ground clearance similar to that of the Chevy Trax. If you are planning serious off-roading, other subcompact SUVs might be better choices.
The popularity of these two likable SUVs comes not from what they cannot do but from what they can. Both the Trax and the HR-V are five-seaters with split-folding rear seats and ample luggage space. They also include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that are impressive given their low purchase prices. While the number of new vehicles around the $25,000 mark is shrinking, both the Chevy and the Honda offer attractive options at that level, although the Trax is considerably cheaper than the HR-V.
Those looking for performance driving or all-terrain capability should consider other models. But if you are after a practical, spacious, and flexible crossover vehicle that is affordable to buy and operate, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax and 2026 Honda HR-V are worth a serious look. Here is our comparison of these two likable small SUVs.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax comes in five trims, LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ, and all versions are front-wheel drive (FWD) only. Although Chevrolet markets the Trax as an SUV, all 2026 trims, including the rugged-looking Activ, do not offer AWD. Pricing starts at $23,495 for the base LS and increases to $27,195 for both the Activ and 2RS, which are at the top of the lineup and have the same manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). All prices include the $1,795 destination charge.
Chevrolet Trax buyers receive complimentary roadside assistance for five years or 60,000 miles, along with one free scheduled maintenance visit within the first 12,000 miles. Every 2026 Trax also includes access to GM’s OnStar connected services platform. The included OnStar Basics package, free for eight years, offers automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance, and remote vehicle commands. Additional OnStar features are available through paid subscription options.
The 2026 Honda HR-V offers three trims: LX, Sport, and EX-L. Front-wheel drive is standard on all trims, and AWD is available on all three. Honda prices the most affordable FWD LX starting at $27,950, while the fully equipped EX-L AWD is the priciest, with a starting MSRP of $33,300. All prices include the $1,450 destination charge.
The 2026 HR-V includes complimentary roadside assistance for three years or 36,000 miles, along with free scheduled maintenance for one year or 12,000 miles. HondaLink Basic connectivity, which offers digital instructions, service appointments, roadside assistance, and recall information, is complimentary on all trims. Free Link connectivity allows owners to check the mileage, fuel range/level, and oil life through the HondaLink app.
Advantage: Chevrolet Trax
Why? The Chevy Trax costs less than the Honda HR-V.
2026 Honda HR-V EX-L
The Chevrolet Trax does not rank among the top three models in the Small SUV segment in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner reported problems after three years of ownership.
The Trax also does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax comes with a standard warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles.
The Honda HR-V does not rank among the top three models in the Small SUV segment in either the 2026 VDS or the 2025 IQS. Its warranty coverage is comparable to the Trax.
Advantage: Neither
Why? Within these parameters, the Chevy Trax and Honda HR-V are tied.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
For 2026, the Chevrolet Trax continues with a single powertrain option: a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine generating 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Although a three-cylinder setup remains unusual for the segment, the Trax offers solid everyday responsiveness, supported by its conventional stepped automatic transmission rather than the continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) favored by many competitors.
The Trax’s fuel economy is competitive within its class. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the flex-fuel versions of the 2026 Trax at 30 mpg combined on regular gasoline and 22 mpg combined on E85 ethanol. Vehicles configured for standard gasoline have an EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined rating.
Dimensionally, the Trax is an inch shorter than the Honda HR-V, but it has an inch longer wheelbase. The four-door hatchback crossover seats up to five occupants, though rear seat comfort is better suited for four adults. Passenger space totals 99.8 cubic feet, with cargo capacity of 25.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 54.1 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded. Chevrolet includes active noise cancellation on every Trax. An optional collapsible, removable cargo organizer adds flexibility to the load area.
Every 2026 Honda HR-V features the same engine and transmission combo: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 158 hp and 138 pound-feet of torque paired with a CVT. Honda makes FWD standard, with AWD available optionally on all trims.
The EPA rates the FWD versions of the 2026 HR-V at 28 mpg combined, while it rates the AWD versions at 27 mpg.
The 2026 Trax and 2026 HR-V are subcompact SUVs that seat five passengers and have similar overall dimensions, with approximately 98 cubic feet of interior passenger space. Both models feature versatile 60/40 split-folding rear seats, illuminated cargo areas, and manual liftgates. The Trax provides slightly more cargo space behind the rear seats, at 25.6 cubic feet, compared to the HR-V's 24.4 cubic feet, while the HR-V offers a small advantage in maximum capacity, at 55.1 cubic feet versus the Trax's 54.1 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded.
Advantage: Neither
Why? The HR-V offers more horsepower, while the Trax provides more torque and slightly better fuel efficiency.
2026 Honda HR-V EX-L
At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand new vehicle to include the following safety features:
So, how do the Trax and HR-V stack up? Let's take a look.
Even at its affordable price, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax offers a solid set of safety and driver assistance features as standard. Every trim includes Chevy Safety Assist, which adds automatic high-beam headlights and a following distance indicator to the typical ADAS package. A rear seat reminder and GM’s Teen Driver monitoring system are also standard. Buyers can upgrade to optional features like adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane centering assistance, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and rear park assist.
As of now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet assessed the 2026 Trax under its five-star safety rating program. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Trax a Good rating in the small-overlap front test but a Poor rating in the updated moderate-overlap front test. The Trax did not receive an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation for 2026.
Honda equips the 2026 HR-V with the Honda Sensing ADAS suite. All trims include most of the above-listed technologies, but the base LX trim lacks blind spot and rear cross-traffic warnings, which are standard on the Sport and EX-L trims. All trims also feature ACC, traffic jam assist, and traffic sign recognition. The EX-L adds standard front and rear parking sensors.
The NHTSA gave the 2026 HR-V a five-star overall safety rating—the agency’s highest. Meanwhile, the IIHS named the 2026 HR-V a Top Safety Pick+ for the 2026 calendar year.
Advantage: Honda HR-V
Why? Both models provide commendable ADAS levels, but the Honda has superior crash ratings.

2026 Chevrolet Trax Activ
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax targets its young buyers with a tiered approach to infotainment. Chevy equips the Base LS, 1RS, and LT trims with an 8-inch center touchscreen, while the top-tier 2RS and Activ trims feature a larger 11-inch display. Both systems support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, voice commands, a trial SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, and Bluetooth audio streaming that connects two devices at once. Higher trims also include an 8-inch digital driver information display and a six-speaker audio system.
All 2026 Trax SUVs include access to GM’s OnStar connected services platform, which offers several subscription options. Every vehicle comes with the OnStar Basics package, free for eight years, that includes automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance, remote vehicle commands, on-demand diagnostics, and real-time vehicle status alerts. A built-in Wi-Fi hotspot is available as an optional paid service.
Perhaps as a response to its turbocharged three-cylinder engine, Chevrolet makes active noise cancellation standard across the Trax lineup. Using in-cabin microphones, the system detects low-frequency sounds and counters them through the audio system to help quiet the cabin. The setup does not require a subscription fee.
The 2026 Honda HR-V features a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 7-inch driver information display. The system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a wireless smartphone charger. The LX trim has four speakers, the Sport has six, and the EX-L has eight.
Several of the HondaLink connected services for the HR-V are free. The basic plan lets HR-V owners view the owner's manual, schedule service, and access 24-hour towing, jump starts, tire changes, and fuel delivery. The Link plan adds the use of a phone app to check the vehicle’s vital signs. Additional connected features, such as remote operation, require a subscription.
Speed-sensitive volume compensation is a feature on the HR-V that adjusts the audio volume based on the vehicle's speed. As the car accelerates, the volume increases, and as it slows down, the volume decreases. The driver can modify the level of speed compensation or disable the system entirely. The HR-V also includes standard active noise cancellation.
Advantage: Chevrolet Trax
Why? The Trax provides a larger display and a more advanced infotainment system.
2026 Honda HR-V
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax stands out with a compelling value in a shrinking market of affordable new vehicles. It beats the Honda HR-V by several thousand dollars across all trim levels, while still offering a spacious five-passenger cabin, versatile cargo space, and a modern suite of infotainment features. The turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine delivers strong low-end torque. Chevrolet further enhances the Trax’s appeal with active noise cancellation, an available 11-inch infotainment display, and an eight-year free OnStar Basics subscription.
The Trax’s biggest limitations come from what it leaves out. Chevrolet does not offer AWD on the 2026 Trax. While its ADAS features are competitive, its IIHS crash-test results fall behind the HR-V’s, and it does not earn Top Safety Pick status. Buyers looking for strong performance or rugged capability from their small SUVs will see the Trax as mainly suited for city and suburban driving.
The 2026 Honda HR-V competes with the Trax by taking a more capability-focused approach, featuring available AWD on every trim. Standard Honda Sensing technology offers a comprehensive ADAS suite, and the HR-V earns a five-star overall NHTSA safety rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provides more horsepower than the Trax, and its interior space is comparable to the Chevy, with slightly greater maximum cargo capacity when the rear seats are folded.
In a segment where every dollar counts, the HR-V’s main weakness is its pricing compared to the Trax. It has a considerably higher starting price than the Chevrolet and rises to over $33,000 for the AWD EX-L trim. Fuel economy is slightly lower than the Chevy’s, especially in AWD trim, and the CVT dulls acceleration. Lower trims lack blind spot and rear cross-traffic warnings. Although its infotainment system works, it does not offer the larger displays or the range of features that the Trax provides. The HR-V offers AWD and safety features, but buyers pay a premium for those advantages.
Advantage: Honda HR-V
Why? The additional power, available AWD, and high safety ratings make the Honda a better choice.
