2025 Ford F-150 vs. 2025 Toyota Tundra Comparison

Jack R. Nerad | Oct 20, 2025

In the competitive world of full-size pickup trucks, the 2025 Ford F-150 and the 2025 Toyota Tundra are two distinct models that share the same goal: delivering capability, comfort, and technology to a wide range of drivers. The F-150 remains the established leader, while the Tundra is a strong challenger.

The F-150 has been a mainstay in driveways, job sites, and off-road trails for decades. The Tundra has evolved from an outsider into a serious competitor, with its current generation offering the size, power, and refinement necessary to rival the segment’s giants.

Both trucks offer a range of options designed to appeal to a broad customer base. Each model begins with a basic work truck version and extends to high-end trim levels, such as the F-150 Platinum and Tundra Capstone. Both combine traditional truck functionality with modern elegance.

Technology remains a key battleground. The Tundra features a large 14-inch touchscreen and simple controls, while the F-150 offers a comprehensive set of trailering aids, driver assists, and cabin tech that varies with trim level. Towing, payload, fuel efficiency, and off-road capability all differ by configuration, with both trucks providing serious engineering strength.

This comparison closely examines how two very different companies have developed two competent trucks to fulfill the demands of today’s truck customers.

The Ford F-150 does not rank among the top three models in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner reported problems during the third year of ownership.

In a tie with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the F-150 ranks highest in its segment in the JD Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.

The 2025 Ford F-150 comes with a standard warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles.

The Toyota Tundra does not rank among the top three models in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment in the 2025 VDS, but it does rank among the top three in its segment in the 2025 IQS. Its warranty coverage matches that of the F-150.

Advantage: Ford F-150

Why? The F-150 edges the Tundra in terms of initial quality.

Performance, Efficiency, and Utility

The 2025 Ford F-150 offers a diverse range of engine options to cater to various needs. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 producing 325 horsepower, while a larger turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 offers 400 hp. A hybrid version of the 3.5-liter V6 increases output to 430 hp, and Ford still offers a traditional 5.0-liter V8 with 400 hp. For high performance, the Raptor features a 450-hp version of the 3.5-liter turbo V6, and customers can choose a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that delivers 720 hp.

The F-150 Hybrid is the most efficient, with an estimated 23 mpg combined, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Next is the turbocharged 2.7-liter V6, which achieves 21 mpg, followed by the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, which achieves 20 mpg combined. The 5.0-liter V8 returns 19 mpg, while the Raptor’s high-output V6 is rated at 16 mpg combined. As of this writing, the EPA has not published estimates for the supercharged V8.

Shoppers can choose from three cab options. The Regular Cab seats two or three people, the Super Cab (extended cab) fits up to six, and the SuperCrew (crew cab) offers space for six occupants. Depending on the trim and cab style, bed lengths of 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, or 8 feet are available. When properly equipped, the F-150 has a maximum towing capacity of 13,500 pounds, and payload ratings reach up to 2,440 pounds, depending on the engine.

The 2025 Toyota Tundra offers two engine choices: a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 and a hybrid system that combines the twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with an electric motor integrated into the driveline. The base engine generates 389 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid setup produces 437 hp and 583 pound-feet of torque. Both options feature a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with 4WD widely available.

The most fuel-efficient 2025 Toyota Tundra is the 2WD hybrid, known as the “i-Force Max.” The EPA estimates it at 22 mpg combined. Rear-wheel-drive Tundras with the base engine get 20 mpg combined, while the 4x4s achieve a 19-mpg combined rating.

The Toyota Tundra does not offer a regular cab option, instead focusing on the more popular Double Cab and CrewMax body styles. The Double Cab comes with 6.5- and 8-foot bed options, while the CrewMax can have 5.5- and 6.5-foot beds. Both styles accommodate five passengers, with CrewMax versions offering eight extra inches of rear seat legroom. The Tundra's top towing capacity is 12,000 pounds, and its maximum payload is 1,940 pounds.

Advantage: Ford F-150

Why? The Ford provides more powertrain choices and cab setups.

Safety and Driving Assistance

At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand new vehicle to include the following safety features:

So, how do the F-150 and Tundra stack up? Let's take a look.

For 2025, every Ford F-150 trim comes equipped with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). This package includes nearly all the common systems listed above. Higher trims feature more advanced technologies, including a surround view camera system, adaptive cruise control (ACC), trailer reverse guidance, and a driver monitoring system. The popular XLT trim makes these features optional.

Select trims come with Ford’s BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving technology, which allows for hands-free acceleration, braking, and steering on over 130,000 miles of pre-mapped highways. Many trims include a 90-day trial of the system, allowing buyers to experience its features firsthand.

In terms of safety, the 2025 F-150 has received the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) highest overall crashworthiness rating of five stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the F-150 a “Top Safety Pick” for the 2024 calendar year, but it has not carried that designation forward for 2025.

The 2025 Toyota Tundra includes most of the systems listed at the top of this section as standard features in Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. Blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning come standard on all trims except the SR and SR5. Toyota also makes ACC, automatic high beam headlights, and traffic sign recognition standard on all trims. Trailer backup guide with straight path assist is an available option.

Unlike many competitors, the 2025 Toyota Tundra does not feature a semi-autonomous driving system, such as Ford’s Blue Cruise or General Motors’ Super Cruise.

The 2025 Toyota Tundra earned a five-star overall crash rating from the NHTSA, the federal agency’s top honor. The IIHS named the 2025 Tundra a “Top Safety Pick+”—its highest award.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The F-150 offers the BlueCruise hands-free self-driving system, while the Tundra earns a “Top Safety Pick+” designation from IIHS.

Infotainment and Technology

The 2025 Ford F-150 offers the Sync 4 infotainment platform accessible via a 12-inch touchscreen. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, SiriusXM with 360L satellite radio, and a one-year trial of connected navigation. The system’s voice control utilizes natural language processing, and higher trims can be equipped with a Bang & Olufsen premium audio system.

Every new F-150 comes equipped with FordPass Connect, which enables over-the-air software updates and features such as a stolen vehicle locator and connected navigation access. The truck features an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot that supports up to 10 devices and includes a complimentary one-year trial of FordPass Connect services.

For towing, the F-150 features a wide range of driver assistance technologies. Pro Trailer Backup Assist aids trailer maneuvering in reverse using a console-mounted knob, while the optional Pro Trailer Hitch Assist automatically aligns the truck for hitching. Other available towing tools include Trailer Reverse Guidance and blind spot monitoring with trailer coverage.

The 2025 Toyota Tundra features the Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and SiriusXM, the last offered with a three-month trial subscription. Base models feature an 8-inch touchscreen, while higher trim levels come equipped with a 14-inch touchscreen and offer access to cloud-based connected navigation, a voice-activated intelligent assistant, and a 12-speaker JBL premium sound system.

Every 2025 Tundra comes equipped with Toyota’s connected services suite. Safety Connect offers an emergency button and a stolen-vehicle locator, along with a complimentary five-year trial. Remote Connect allows owners to lock and unlock doors, start the vehicle remotely, and track usage with a guest driver setting. Additionally, the Tundra offers 4G Wi-Fi support for up to 10 devices, with a 30-day trial included.

When towing with the integrated trailer brake controller engaged, the Tundra’s available blind spot warning system can detect vehicles in the blind spots next to the trailer. The system automatically detects trailer length and activates Trailer Merge Warning.

Advantage: Neither

Why? The F-150 features a more comprehensive set of trailer-towing technologies, whereas the Tundra provides more connectivity options with longer free trial periods.

Independent Expert Opinion

2025 Toyota Tundra

The Ford F-150 continues to be the cornerstone of Ford’s lineup and a leading force in the full-size pickup truck market. Its lasting success comes from its broad appeal, offering configurations and trims that range from basic, budget-friendly work trucks to family-focused daily drivers and high-end luxury and off-road variants. Ford has carefully adapted the F-150 to meet the needs of almost every type of buyer, maintaining its position as the brand’s most important and best-selling model.

A combination of capability and technology supports that broad reach. The F-150 offers a variety of powertrains, ranging from turbocharged EcoBoost engines to a traditional V8, allowing buyers to match their performance needs with their priorities. Inside, the cabin strikes a balance between utility and refinement, offering modern infotainment and premium features depending on the trim level. For those who tow, Ford equips the truck with top-notch trailering technologies that make hauling easier and safer.

Toyota has invested a significant amount of time and effort in making the Tundra a serious competitor in the full-size light-duty pickup truck market. The truck's earlier generations lacked the size and curb presence to compete with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500. Still, the current model is a genuine contender with comparable capabilities and a wide range of trims. From the commercial-focused SR "work truck" to the Capstone line-topper, the Tundra offers a trim for every buyer.

Traditionalists might criticize the absence of a conventional normally aspirated V8 and question the long-term reliability of the twin-turbocharged standard and hybrid powertrains. On the plus side, they offer smooth power, ample torque, and good fuel economy. Inside, the Tundra features a very large (14-inch) touchscreen, user friendly tech, and a comfortable cabin. It is somewhat lacking in advanced trailer-towing and semi-autonomous driving systems.

Advantage: Ford F-150

Why? For buyers comfortable with turbocharging and hybrid driveline systems, the 2025 Tundra can be a good choice, but the traditionalist in me would prefer a V8-powered F-150.
