Ford debuted Pro Trailer Backup Assist in 2015 as a vehicle-assisted towing function that made hitching and backing a trailer much easier for people without decades of experience. The system has evolved over the years, and the automaker now includes it in more than just its trucks. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist—a brand-new feature for the industry—is a more recent addition to the package.
Pro Trailer Hitch Assist completely takes over the truck’s controls and can back it up to the trailer hitch. Since it’s a new function, Ford doesn’t offer it on as wide a range of models, but it is available on the new, all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup, where buyers can add it to the Pro, XLT, and Lariat trim levels.
The Pro Trailer Backup Assist system uses the truck’s reversing camera and sensors to help the driver confidently steer the truck while backing a trailer. The system uses a rotary dial on the dash to allow the driver to avoid the guesswork that comes with turning a trailer in reverse. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist works within the same system and controls steering, gas, and brake inputs.
Ford previously offered a dynamic hitch-assist system that used the truck’s backup camera and guidelines to make hitching easier. The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system takes that functionality a step further with semi-autonomous hitch features.
After you hitch the trailer, you will eventually need to back it up. Rather than trying to guess which way to turn the wheel or needing a spotter, Pro Trailer Backup Assist uses a single dial on the truck’s dash. The system requires programming to sense and direct the trailer properly, and the truck offers step-by-step prompts to guide users through the setup.
Once configured, the driver can turn the truck and trailer using a dial. Where backing up manually requires counter-steering the truck and trailer in many cases, Pro Trailer Backup Assist lets the driver choose the direction quickly, and the truck figures out the rest. It’s important to note that neither Pro Trailer Backup Assist nor Hitch Assist offers self-driving functionality. The driver must be attentive and ready to take manual control at any time.
The Pro Trailer Backup Assist system is available on the Ford Expedition, Ford F-150, and Ford F-Series Super Duty. Lincoln offers the technology on the new Navigator SUV.
All full-size trucks are available with some degree of trailer assistance. Ram offers Trailer Reverse Steering Control, which features a single dial in the center stack that functions like Ford’s dial. GMC and Chevrolet offer assist systems that create a transparent trailer view, letting the driver “see” through the trailer. The automakers also offer several camera angles to give the driver a comprehensive view of the situation around the truck.
Some General Motors trucks offer hands-free Super Cruise functionality when towing, which allows the driver to cruise without much manual intervention on select highways across the United States and Canada. Ford offers its BlueCruise hands-free driving system in the new F-150 Lightning, but it does not currently provide trailering capabilities.
Ford’s Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system could be the difference between an easy day towing and a day full of headaches.
