When talking about the most fuel-efficient trucks, you might quickly eliminate full-size or even midsize pickups from the conversation due to their larger dimensions, weight, and capabilities. However, several full-size pickup models earn top rankings in terms of being fuel-efficient. And fortunately, you don't have to lose out on towing and hauling capabilities to get a truck with excellent fuel economy.

When considering trucks that get good gas mileage, you can choose among multiple powertrain types. Hybrids and diesel-powered pickups dominate the choices. However, a few trucks with conventional gasoline engines and battery-electric powertrains also qualify. In fact, battery-electric trucks are the best trucks for fuel efficiency.

In addition to picking your preferred powertrain, you can also choose your preferred size, including small, midsize, and full-size trucks. Virtually all of them can accommodate up to five adult passengers. The most fuel-efficient trucks don't have spartan interiors, either. Instead, customers can outfit them with all the comfort and convenience features they desire, including large-screen infotainment displays, heated power-adjustable seats, and powerful audio systems.

Not surprisingly, those intended for on-road use are among the most fuel-efficient trucks. The low gearing, 4-wheel drive, and added equipment that gives all-terrain trucks extra capabilities off pavement harm fuel economy. Conversely, several trucks that offer limousine-like interior space and ride comfort provide excellent fuel economy. Also, remember that diesel-powered trucks deliver exceptional range.

The bottom line: Do not hastily eliminate midsize and full-size models when looking for a fuel-efficient truck.

Check out this list of the most fuel-efficient trucks, and you might just be pleasantly surprised.
