The test vehicle's manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $38,410, including the $1,420 destination charge to ship the crossover SUV from the Lafayette, Indiana, assembly plant to a local dealership. Independent Expert Opinion: Design, Comfort, and Utility

The Crosstrek received an exterior redesign for 2024, and not much has changed since then. Subaru is definitely taking a subtle approach here, with only a few discreet Hybrid badges on the fenders and another at the rear.
A new 18-inch wheel design is exclusive to the Crosstrek Hybrid, and true Subaru enthusiasts will recognize a couple of new colors. The first is Sand Dune Pearl, which has a distinctive desert-inspired look, and the second is Citron Yellow Pearl, a bright lime green that makes your car stand out in the parking lot.
Inside the Crosstrek Hybrid, things will appear even more familiar. On the Limited, you will find a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel, currently exclusive to that trim. The only other notable change is a single button labeled "EV Mode" on the left side of the dashboard. That instructs the car to drain the battery and operate on electric power for as long as possible.
Otherwise, it is the same interior as the other versions of the Crosstrek that we already know. As such, it is basic and filled with hard plastics, but quite functional. The Crosstrek Hybrid officially seats five, and if you have three kids to occupy the second row, that is a reasonable option. There is sufficient head and legroom for adults in the back, but fitting three across might be a challenge.
Seating up front is more generous. Two levels of heating and a heated steering wheel are included. It is not extremely spacious, but at six feet tall, I fit comfortably, even with the power sunroof taking up some headroom.
Those plastics may not be the most pleasant to touch or look at, but the interior appears very durable. This includes Subaru's StarTex upholstery on the Hybrid Limited, a sturdy material with orange contrasting stitching.
Regarding cargo space, the previous Crosstrek Hybrid was a plug-in model with a large battery that did not quite fit in the hatch. The result was a raised floor and a significant loss of cargo space.
The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid’s battery is significantly smaller, resulting in a more balanced compromise. This crossover SUV offers 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 54.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. That compares to 19.9 and 54.7 in the non-hybrid trims.
Independent Expert Opinion: Starlink Infotainment System Review

Photo: Tim Stevens
On the infotainment side, the Crosstrek Hybrid features the same 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen found elsewhere in the model lineup. It runs the same Starlink software system, which is responsive and easy to use, although it can be a bit cluttered and appear outdated.
The new feature here is the 12.3-inch gauge cluster, which is exclusive to the Limited Hybrid trim. If you are using Apple CarPlay, you can display Apple Maps there. However, Google Maps users on Android Auto are out of luck.
There is no traditional head-up display. However, the Crosstrek features a few LEDs on the dashboard that blink as secondary warnings for features such as lane departure and emergency braking.
The Starlink system supports the familiar media sources:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring
- SiriusXM satellite radio
- Bluetooth streaming
- HD Radio
Phone pairing is quick and easy, and these projection services dominate the center of the display, with both the upper and lower parts remaining stationary. At the bottom, you can see controls to adjust the cabin temperature, while at the top, a series of panels allows you to toggle through different vehicle information and controls.
The system is a bit cluttered and sometimes awkward. To activate Subaru's X-Mode off-road system, for instance, you need to swipe a few pages to the right on the top part of the screen before the toggle controls appear. The sound from the Limited's 10-speaker Harman Kardon system is not exactly premium, but it is more than enough to fill the compact cabin.
Independent Expert Opinion: Driving the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Photo: Tim Stevens
The Crosstrek Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that provides most of the power. Combined with electric motors, it delivers 194 horsepower to all four wheels through Subaru's all-wheel-drive (AWD) system and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
That is only up 14 hp over the base Crosstrek, but it feels like more on the road. The hybrid system provides some extra throttle response and initial acceleration when you first press the throttle. However, full acceleration remains mild at best. That CVT is also not very engaging, clearly tuned for efficiency rather than excitement, even when you put the Crosstrek into its sportier throttle mode.
It does pay off in terms of fuel economy. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid gets 36 mpg combined. In my evaluation of the Crosstrek, I achieved only 28 mpg, but that was on a limited test route that included a lot of off-road driving and full-throttle acceleration tests. Regular drivers in normal conditions will likely achieve significantly better mileage.
Even when testing in irregular conditions, the Crosstrek Hybrid remained very comfortable. Although my off-road adventures were mainly on dirt and gravel roads, the Hybrid efficiently delivered power through all four wheels. All-wheel drive, of course, comes standard on every 2026 Crosstrek. Meanwhile, its lifted suspension absorbed some seriously rough washboards without any issues.
On the road, that compliance is a bit less of an advantage. There is quite a bit of body roll when you navigate corners, which might upset a more sensitive stomach. Still, the Crosstrek Hybrid is surprisingly fun to drive thanks to good grip and sharp steering, making it much more engaging than anything else in its competitive class.
Independent Expert Opinion: EyeSight Safety Features Review

Photo: Tim Stevens
Every 2026 Crosstrek includes Subaru's EyeSight active safety system, providing many common features as standard, including:
Choosing the Crosstrek Hybrid brings a few additional features:
Finally, the Limited version also features a surround view camera.
These systems all performed well during my tests, although some may have been slightly overzealous at times. The lane departure system, in particular, was quick to alert me whenever I neared the painted lines. This often happened on the winding, narrow roads that pass through the rural Washington countryside, where I tested the SUV, leading to a flurry of irritating noises inside the cabin.
Similarly, the driver monitoring system beeped and chimed whenever my eye stayed on Mt. Adams for more than a second or two. This could be reassuring if you have a younger or more easily distracted driver you are worried about behind the wheel. However, I fear it is so quick to alert that many drivers will turn it off.
