Believe it or not, the Subaru Crosstrek has been on sale for a decade in North America, and to celebrate, the automaker is giving the popular crossover a makeover. First revealed in Japan in 2022, the new third-generation Crosstrek features sharper styling, a stiffened chassis, and more available features. There’s no word on the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid yet.
Subaru offers the 2024 Crosstrek in four trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. Two powertrains are available, and all get the automaker’s famed all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Amazingly, Subaru was able to hold the Crosstrek’s price steady for the new model year at a time when new car prices are climbing.
The new Crosstrek features more mature styling than its predecessor, which includes a new hexagonal grille and smaller headlights. The sides are more deeply sculpted, and black wheel arch cladding helps give the Crosstrek a beefier stance. Subaru incorporated several functional aerodynamic components with the new exterior design, such as an air outlet on the back side of the front wheel arches to channel the air more efficiently through the body.
Subaru redesigned the Crosstrek’s front seats with more support, which the automaker says helps to reduce fatigue. The automaker focused on comfort with the new model and says that its standard dual-zone climate system now focuses on occupied seats instead of the entire cabin. The top Limited trim gets perforated leather upholstery, while the Sport comes with premium two-tone cloth.
Two powertrains are available for the 2024 Crosstrek. The base engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up to the Sport and Limited trims brings a 2.5-liter engine with 182 hp and 178 pound-feet of torque. Subaru’s long-running habit of using a continuously variable automatic transmission in everything continues here. In the Crosstrek, the automaker pairs it with standard AWD. All but the Base trim come with paddle shifters that simulate actual shift points.
Interestingly, beginning with the new 2024 model, Subaru doesn’t offer a manual transmission in the base Crosstrek as it has for years. Torque vectoring and selectable drive modes come standard. Subaru includes the WRX’s electronic power steering rack in the new Crosstrek, which it says improves steering feel and responsiveness.
All third-gen Crosstreks get Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist tech, which the automaker says it improved for 2024 with more intuitive alerts and faster response times. Subaru also says the updates bring a wider field of view and new control software. The technology is now quicker to detect bicyclists and pedestrians, and the crossover gets a new electronic brake booster. Buyers can upgrade with reverse automatic braking and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning.
When upgraded with the available blind-spot warning feature, the Crosstrek now comes with automatic emergency steering. According to Subaru, the system can help avoid a collision within a lane at speeds under 50 mph. A rear-seat reminder system comes standard, designed to prevent drivers from leaving children and pets in a hot car.
Subaru notes that the Crosstrek has earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in each of the last 11 years. While the Institute has yet to test the new 2024 model, the automaker says it is confident the SUV will return similar results.
The 2024 Crosstrek comes standard with a dual-7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with the top screen running Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD Radio come standard. The bottom screen handles climate controls and other vehicle settings.
Like other Subaru models, the new Crosstrek is available with a portrait-oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen. It brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with navigation and touch controls for nearly every vehicle setting. The larger display also gets over-the-air updates, allowing Subaru to enable new functions and revise existing features over time. Subaru Starlink, the automaker’s suite of connected services, is available and includes emergency response features, diagnostics alerts, a stolen-vehicle locator, remote lock/unlock, emergency roadside assistance, and more.
The Subaru Crosstrek counts several fantastic small crossovers among its competitors, including the new Honda HR-V, which got a complete redesign for 2023. The Kia Seltos brings tremendous value and attractive styling, while buyers can obtain the Hyundai Kona in a powerful performance variant. Finally, buyers shouldn’t ignore the Mazda CX-30 with its upscale cabin finishes, standard AWD, and engaging driving experience.
