2025 Lexus NX vs. 2025 BMW X3 Comparison

Jack R. Nerad | Sep 24, 2024

The comparison of the 2025 BMW X3 and the 2025 Lexus NX showcases how fiercely competitive the market for small luxury SUVs has become. BMW and Lexus pack these five-passenger models with features once reserved for high-end sedans.

Despite their compact size, the BMW X3 and Lexus NX are practical and versatile. While the NX’s base version is two-wheel drive (2WD), it offers an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system that improves traction in challenging weather conditions and on slippery surfaces; all versions of the 2025 X3 have BMW’s xDrive AWD. Their relatively short overall lengths make them well-suited to urban driving. At the same time, they’re effective at transporting awkward or bulky cargo, demonstrating that luxury does not have to compromise utility.

The NX and X3 feature a range of comfort and convenience amenities such as heated and ventilated seats, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and premium sound systems that deliver a concert hall-like experience. Regarding tech, they include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), sophisticated connectivity, and hybrid powertrains that boost fuel efficiency.

For all their similarities, there are critical differences between the two models. The 2025 Lexus NX particularly appeals to those who value cutting-edge hybrid technology and a reputation for reliability. On the other hand, the redesigned 2025 BMW X3 could attract buyers looking for a dynamic driving experience and refined German engineering.

This comparison makes your decision easier by highlighting each model's unique qualities. Understanding the differences between the 2025 BMW X3 and the 2025 Lexus NX will help you choose the vehicle that best suits your preferences and lifestyle.

Price and Value

Lexus offers the 2025 NX in six trim levels: NX 250, NX 350 AWD, NX 350 F Sport Handling AWD, NX 350h AWD, NX 450h+ AWD, and NX 450h+ F Sport Handling AWD. The base NX 250, priced at $41,990, is the only front-wheel-drive (FWD) model, while the rest feature AWD. At the top of the range, the NX 450h+ F Sport Handling AWD is the most expensive, starting at $63,505. Prices do not include the $1,150 destination charge.

All new Lexus NX SUVs come with free roadside assistance for four years with no mileage limit, and they feature LexusCare, which includes complimentary first and second scheduled maintenance services. NX buyers also receive a three-year Lexus Remote Connect trial, which includes digital key and remote start. Lexus Wi-Fi Connect offers hotspot functionality with a 30-day/3-gigabyte trial.

The all-new 2025 BMW X3 lineup offers one core trim—xDrive30—plus a high-performance trim: X3 M50. Both offer standard xDrive. At $49,500, the xDrive30 is the least costly X3. At the top of the lineup, the X3 M50 has a base price of $64,100, and it includes, among other things, a 393-horsepower, turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

The 2025 X3 offers free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles and free roadside assistance for four years with no mileage restriction. BMW ConnectedDrive offers a dense matrix of connected services that range from standard services like remote lock and unlock to more leading-edge features like traffic camera information and the uneven road surface app that warns the driver of approaching dips, potholes, and rough roads.

Advantage: Lexus NX

Why? The 2025 NX is significantly less expensive than the 2025 X3.

Reliability and Quality

The Lexus NX ranks highest in the Compact Premium SUV segment in the JD Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner-reported problems during the third year of ownership.

The NX does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the JD Power 2024 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which tracks problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days.

The 2025 Lexus NX offers a standard four-year or 50,000-mile warranty and a powertrain warranty of six years or 70,000 miles. Additionally, Lexus covers hybrid components for eight years or 100,000 miles.

The BMW X3 does not rank among the top three models in its segment in the 2024 VDS or the 2024 IQS. Its limited warranty coverage matches the NX’s, while its powertrain warranty is shorter than the Lexus’s by two years and 20,000 miles.

Advantage: Lexus NX

Why? The NX ranks highest in its segment in the 2024 VDS and offers a longer powertrain warranty.

Performance and Efficiency

The 2025 Lexus NX offers compact crossover shoppers several powertrain options. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The NX 350 models feature a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 275 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque. The NX 350h AWD is a hybrid producing a combined 240 hp, while the NX 450h+ trims come with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain generating 304 hp and offering 37 miles of electric-only range. An automatic transmission is standard across the board.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the NX 250 achieves 28 mpg in combined driving, and the 350h hybrid gets 39 mpg. As of this writing, the EPA has yet to rate the fuel economy of the 2025 NX 450h+ plug-in hybrids, but Lexus estimates their combined efficiency at 84 MPGe.

The 2025 BMW X3 offers buyers two engine choices. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 255 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque powers the mainstream xDrive30. The sportier M50 features a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder, delivering 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. New for 2025, both engines benefit from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that improves initial response and boosts efficiency. Both X3 models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission, and each has standard xDrive.

According to the EPA, the xDrive30 is the fuel-economy leader with a 29-mpg combined mark, while the M50 turns in a 27-mpg number.

Advantage: Neither

Why? If power is your thing, the X3 wins hands-down, but the NX models are significantly more fuel-efficient.

Safety and Driving Assistance

At this point, it is reasonable for any consumer to expect a brand-new vehicle to include the following safety features:

So, how do the Lexus NX and BMW X3 stack up? Let's take a look.

The 2025 Lexus NX checks most boxes with a comprehensive suite of standard ADAS called Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 (LSS+ 3.0). While blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warnings are not part of LSS+ 3.0, they are also standard on all 2025 NX trims. Beyond expected ADAS, the NX also offers adaptive cruise control with Curve Speed Management, lane-centering assistance, and Proactive Driving Assist, which provides automatic braking and steering support when approaching bends in the road.

As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn't published an overall safety rating for the 2025 Lexus NX. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the SUV’s crashworthiness. However, it did name the structurally similar 2024 NX a Top Safety Pick for the 2024 calendar year.

The 2025 BMW X3 offers a lengthy list of standard and available ADAS, including some leading-edge systems, but several features are in optional packages instead of standard equipment. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package includes BMW's Active Driving Assistant, which integrates adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane-keeping assistance with blind-spot assist. Additional features include front cross-traffic warning, automatic emergency steering, lane-change assistance, and active parking assistance. The X3 offers the availability of a 3D surround-view camera system.

As of this writing, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has published safety ratings for the 2025 BMW X3. However, the IIHS named the structurally similar 2024 X3 a Top Safety Pick+ for the 2024 calendar year.

Advantage: BMW X3

Why? Both NX and X3 offer impressive lists of ADAS, including some unusual systems, but the X3 has also earned accolades from the IIHS.

Infotainment and Technology

The infotainment system in the 2025 Lexus NX utilizes the homegrown Lexus Interface. All except for the 450h+ trims come with a standard 9.8-inch touchscreen display, with an upgrade to a 14-inch touchscreen optional. The larger screen is standard on the 450h+ trims. The two closely related infotainment systems feature wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a three-month SiriusXM Platinum satellite radio trial.

The 2025 NX includes Lexus Remote Connect, which provides remote engine starting, vehicle health reports, and service scheduling, plus a three-year trial of Drive Connect, which offers cloud-based navigation, a digital assistant, and destination services. Lexus also fits all 2025 NX SUVs with a 30-day/3-gigabyte trial of Wi-Fi Connect, which allows multiple devices to connect to an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot.

The NX's digital e-Latch door-opening system integrates with the vehicle's safe-exit assistance system to prevent occupants from inadvertently opening a door when a car, bicyclist, or jogger approaches from behind.

The 2025 BMW X3 features a standard 14.9-inch curved display running BMW Operating System 9. It includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a one-year trial of SiriusXM satellite radio. The infotainment system enables Google Assistant, Siri, Amazon Alexa, map apps, music-streaming services, a digital personal assistant, and the WhatsApp messaging service.

The X3 offers a wide selection of connected services through BMW ConnectedDrive, including the My BMW smartphone app. Among a long list of subscription services are cloud-based navigation, real-time traffic information and routing, a personal assistant, on-street parking information, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and concierge services.

While a parking-assistance system is standard, the available Parking Assistant Professional system offers top-view images of detected parking spaces, enabling automatic maneuvering into them. The Drive Recorder uses those same surround-view cameras to record day-to-day driving. It allows playback of up to 40 seconds of footage capturing unfolding events in critical traffic situations.

Advantage: BMW X3

Why? The X3 offers a broader range of infotainment app availability and functionality.

Comfort and Utility

The five-passenger Lexus NX boasts a modern interior design with high-quality materials. The NX is nearly identical to its rival, the X3, in key interior dimensions. The Lexus's digital instrument panel is clear and vibrant, and the automatic climate control features separate knobs for temperature settings, making the controls intuitive and user-friendly.

Most 2025 Lexus NX trims come with standard synthetic leather seats, while the 450h+ trims include genuine leather seats and upscale open-pore wood trim. A tilt-and-slide moonroof and a panoramic glass roof are available.

The NX features eight-way power-adjustable front seats, and the driver's seat also features power lumbar support. Heated front seats are standard across all trims, with heated and ventilated seats widely available throughout the lineup. Buyers can add a fast-response heater—standard on the NX 350 F Sport Handling AWD—to several other trims.

The NX has a cargo area of 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 46.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. A power-operated rear door is standard, with an optional version that includes a kick sensor.

The BMW X3 is all-new for 2025, possessing an attractive and well-finished interior. The dashboard includes a bright, 14.9-inch digital driver's display. In an era in which many vehicle functions hide in touchscreens, the X3 offers occupants a welcome array of conventional knobs, buttons, and thumbwheels.

The two front-seat passengers fare exceptionally well in nicely bolstered, power-adjustable bucket seats. Rear-seat passengers sit on a comfortable divided bench and have access to climate controls. Seat upholstery choices include M Veganza/Alcantara and Extended Merino leather. Buyers can opt for a woven fabric instrument panel made of recycled materials. BMW equips the X3 with power and heated front seats.

The 2025 X3 offers 31.5 cubic feet of cargo area behind the second row. With the rear row folded, space increases to 67.1 cubic feet. Both numbers are substantially better than the 2025 Lexus NX.

Advantage: BMW X3

Why? The BMW X3 offers a lot more cargo space.
