Adding European flair to the otherwise vanilla midsize three-row family SUV market, the redesigned 2027 Volkswagen Atlas debuts with a sharper exterior, an upgraded cabin, more power, and new technology features.
Overdue for a complete overhaul, the all-new 2027 Atlas is Volkswagen’s largest model, positioned above the Atlas Cross Sport—also a midsize SUV, but smaller than the Atlas and with only two rows of seats. Together, the two SUVs account for 30 percent of VW’s U.S. sales volume.
For 2027, the Atlas gets a new look, highlighted by new headlights, a more streamlined side profile, and rear lighting that spans the width of the power liftgate. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard on the base trim; all other trims receive 20- or 21-inch alloys. Three new colors also join the 2027 paint palette: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone.
Volkswagen also upgrades the Atlas’ cabin for 2027, introducing richer materials, ambient lighting, and a new multi-function center console dial. To make room for the new controller, the gear shifter moves to the steering column. Genuine leather comes on top trims, while synthetic leather is standard on the base model. Dual wireless smartphone charging is standard, as are rear sunshades to keep those in the back cool on hot summer days.
A 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard on the base model; all other trims feature a 15-inch screen. The new Atlas also features VW’s Digital Cockpit Pro, which lets drivers customize the 10.3-inch driver gauge display. Standard audio includes a nine-speaker system; a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available on the top trim.
The 2027 Atlas is powered by an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 282 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It delivers 13 more horsepower than the previous generation and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on lower trims; all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on higher trims and available on lower trims. Volkswagen says a hybrid is also in the works and will be rolled out when the automaker next refreshes the Atlas.
Notably, VW improved the Atlas’ fuel economy despite increasing its power. Indeed, the 2027 Atlas with FWD gets 25 mpg combined, compared with 23 mpg for the 2026 version. Choosing AWD results in a 2-mpg penalty.
Available in four trims—SE, SE with Technology, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line—the 2027 Atlas starts at $43,135 (SE FWD). The SE with Technology starts at $47,135. Adding AWD to either trim adds $2,000. The SEL R-Line with standard AWD starts at $53,635, and the top-of-the-line SEL Premium R-Line starts at $58,135. All prices include the destination charge. VW says the 2027 Atlas will arrive in fall 2026.
There is no shortage of midsize three-row SUVs to choose from, and each has its merits. The Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride offer tremendous value, bold styling, and a strong powertrain warranty. Others, like the more conservatively styled Honda Pilot and Toyota Grand Highlander, focus on technology, interior space, and comfort. Other popular choices in the genre include the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-90, and Subaru Ascent.
Volkswagen has a reputation for producing vehicles that are fun to drive and embody German style. While no one will mistake the VW Atlas for a Porsche Cayenne, both are sporty SUVs from the same automaker, Volkswagen Group. That said, buyers seeking a touch of German flair and engineering in their family SUV will likely appreciate the Atlas for what it is: a handsome three-row SUV with European flair.
