Though the styling stays largely the same, a massive boost in electric range for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV), plus a refined design, helps the 2028 Volvo XC60 stay current and desirable.
Since the current generation Volvo XC60’s introduction for the 2018 model year, it has proven to be not only a stately addition to the premium crossover segment, but also a strong seller for the brand. As Volvo's most popular model in the United States, the XC60 is not something the Swedish brand wants to modify lightly.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that for the 2028 model year, Volvo has not done much to change the XC60's core formula. It is still a two-row, five-passenger SUV with Scandinavian design inside and out, plus a choice of mild- or plug-in-hybrid powertrains. For this latest version, however, that looks even cleaner, and the plug-in system is far more comprehensive.
A larger battery pack enables the 2028 Volvo XC60 T8 to deliver a whopping 78 miles of all-electric driving on a single charge. That more than doubles the 35 miles the outgoing plug-in variant could manage.
The heavily revised battery pack delivers a capacity of 41.2 gross kilowatt-hours, while different packaging allowed Volvo to reduce the transmission tunnel intrusion, creating a roomier footwell in the back.
That battery powers an electric motor on the rear axle to provide all-wheel drive (AWD). Power output remains 455 horsepower, as does the lower-output B5 mild hybrid at 247 hp, both again offering standard AWD.
Visually, the 2028 XC60 features a revised nose, hood, and fenders, all subtly simplified compared with the outgoing model. Changes are even more subtle inside, with a new upholstery option, Cardamom ventilated leather, which pairs nicely with a new exterior color, Heather Bronze.
Volvo recently updated the XC60's interior to feature a larger, 11.2-inch vertical display. That remains in the 2028 model, still positioned vertically in the center of the dashboard. The Google-powered operating system now features Gemini on the dashboard, ready and waiting for all your on-the-go AI needs.
Finally, the revised XC60 features a new sensor package, with an upgraded set of radar, optical, and ultrasonic sensors that enable the SUV to see the world around it more clearly. Those sensors are paired with a new, more powerful controller. The first new feature is a lane change assistance function, but Volvo promises more via over-the-air updates.
While it is far from an all-new model, that big boost in range and smarter safety tech should keep Volvo's latest XC60 competitive with rivals like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC, protecting its position as the brand's most popular model.
