2027 Subaru Getaway Preview

James Riswick | Jul 13, 2026

Subaru is about to expand its electric vehicle (EV) lineup in more ways than one. Arriving in late 2026, the new 2027 Subaru Getaway three-row SUV will be the largest of the brand’s now-trio of electric offerings, co-developed with Toyota. Specifically, the Getaway shares much with the all-new, all-electric Toyota Highlander. It has impressive specs that should make it quite competitive in the growing electric three-row SUV segment.

Every Getaway comes standard with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) system that delivers a whopping 420 horsepower. Initially, a 95.8-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack will be standard, with a 77-kWh “standard-range” model to follow. Trim levels and pricing were not announced at the time of this writing, but we do know a fair bit about standard equipment (see below).

What’s New for the 2027 Subaru Getaway - Find the best Subaru deals!

  • An all-new, all-electric three-row crossover SUV
  • 420 hp with an initial range of more than 300 miles
  • Standard 14-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument display
  • Pricing is not yet available, but it should go on sale in late 2026

If you look at the Getaway next to the new Highlander, it is hard to miss the resemblance. The Subaru has a distinctive face, though, similar to what you see on the Solterra and Uncharted. One particularly interesting detail: all trims come with illuminated Subaru badges.

Most Getaway trims will also come standard with ladder-type raised roof rails, which I have found make it easier to use crossbars and racks you already own rather than specially fitted equipment. Every picture of the 2027 Highlander shows it with less versatile flush side rails.

Subaru has not announced most dimensions yet, but it did indicate that the Getaway has 8.3 inches of ground clearance. That is less than the 8.7 inches of Subaru’s gas-powered SUVs, but still quite high.

If the Getaway’s shared DNA with the new Highlander is not obvious from the outside, it should be clear when you climb inside. There are different color choices, but the two are otherwise identical.

Heated front seats are standard, but certain trims (exact ones to be announced) will get heated second- and third-row seats, ventilated front- and second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel with 360-degree coverage (versus some that, according to my observations, only heat certain areas).

Other standard features will include three-zone climate control, third-row air vents, cupholders for every seat, and USB-C charging ports in both rear rows. A panoramic sunroof is available, though it is not yet clear which trims will have it.

Initially, the 2027 Subaru Getaway will come standard with a 95.8-kWh battery that will provide more than 300 miles of range, according to Subaru. It has a Tesla-style NACS charging port, which will grant it easier access to certain Superchargers. However, its maximum charging speed is only 150 kilowatts (kW). By contrast, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 can take advantage of 350-kW fast chargers.

A standard dual-motor AWD system will deliver 420 hp. The Highlander tops out at 338 hp, while only the Ioniq 9’s top trims have 422 hp; the others have 303 hp.

In addition to AWD, the Getaway will feature X-Mode off-road drive modes (Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud) and downhill assist, which automatically manages your speed when going downhill off-road. The tow rating is 3,500 pounds.

In the first half of 2027, a standard range Getaway model with a 77-kWh battery will debut. It will also feature AWD, with additional details available closer to its launch.

2027 Subaru Getaway Safety and Technology - Find your EV's driving range

Every 2027 Subaru Getaway trim will come standard with a 14.1-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. Two wireless smartphone chargers are available up front, but it is unclear at this time where they will appear on the trim ladder. The rear cabin will have four USB-C ports.

Regarding safety tech, Subaru indicated that standard features will include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, and adaptive cruise control. It also listed “Traffic Jam Assist,” a Toyota system that enables hands-free highway driving, but only at low, gridlock-like speeds. Certain trims will add front cross-traffic warning and additional parking assist.

2027 Subaru Getaway Competitors - Find the best Subaru deals!

Besides its 2027 Toyota Highlander twin, the Getaway will compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Kia EV9. Although pricing has yet to be announced, it is reasonable to expect the Getaway’s top trims to fall within the same price range as the Rivian R1S.
