As one of the earliest mass-market electric vehicles (EVs), the original Nissan Leaf helped define the affordable electric car segment. With the 2026 redesign, Nissan aims to maintain that momentum by offering the convenience of mainstream EV tech in a new package that's more appealing to modern buyers.

The third-generation Leaf trades its compact hatchback shape for a more aerodynamic crossover profile. The new design enhances efficiency and cabin space while introducing a more modern and upscale presence.
Offered in S, S+, SV+, and Platinum+ trim levels, the 2026 Leaf comes with a 75-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery estimated to deliver up to 303 miles of range. It supports both J1772 and North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging ports, with DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts (kW). A 52-kWh battery option will be available later.

Nissan styled the 2026 Leaf with a more streamlined crossover silhouette featuring a pronounced spoiler. Compared to the outgoing Leaf's hatchback body style, the new design offers improved aerodynamics and increased efficiency. Flush motorized door handles debut, and hidden rear handles clean up the side profile. The rear fenders meet the sloping rear windows to offer dramatic style.
Updated stacked rectangular lighting elements, a solid blacked-out grille, available full-width running lamps, and an optional illuminated Nissan logo reshape the front of the Leaf. The SV+ and Platinum+ trims offer 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels. Color options include two-tone choices like Seabreeze Blue Pearl, Coulis Red Pearl, and Everest White Pearl. LED lighting comes standard.

The new Leaf adopts a more open interior layout with a slimmer dashboard, a dash-mounted shifter, and a floating-style center console. The redesigned front seats and flat floor enhance rear legroom, boosting comfort and facilitating movement within the cabin. This feature is especially beneficial for families and ridesharing situations.
Platinum+ offers 64-color ambient lighting and a 10-speaker Bose Personal Plus audio system, which adds front headrest speakers that allow the driver to focus on phone calls or navigation directions.
An available dimming panoramic roof debuts, which Nissan says is a segment first. The multi-layer glass element can transition from clear to opaque with the press of a button, blocking out light and heat.
The rear offers 55.5 cubic feet of cargo space, and an optional, removable Divide-N-Hide organizer enhances underfloor storage organization.

The electric motors in the 2026 Leaf pack 214 horsepower, thanks to the 75-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack. Nissan claims the 2026 Leaf provides up to 303 miles of all-electric range. The automaker said a less powerful 52-kWh version producing 174 hp will be available later.
The 2026 Leaf supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 150 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 35 minutes under ideal conditions.
Equipped with J1772 and NACS charging ports, the Leaf offers broad compatibility with home and public charging infrastructure—including access to Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network—making it easier to recharge, whether around town or on a road trip.
Plug & Charge is also now available, allowing for automatic billing at public chargers once set up, eliminating the need for a card or an app. This makes charging even easier and more accessible.
SV+ and Platinum+ Leafs come standard with a heat pump to enhance usability in cold weather, and an optional battery heater helps maintain charging efficiency.

Standard on every 2026 Leaf is Nissan's Safety Shield 360 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) suite. It includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning. A new feature for 2026—Secondary Collision Mitigation Braking—applies the brakes after an initial crash to help prevent further impact.
ProPilot Assist also comes standard, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance to support the driver in heavy traffic or long-distance cruising. Higher trims offer added visibility with a surround-view camera and new features that simulate a clear view of the road beneath the front of the car.
Display sizes start at dual 12.3-inch screens on S and S+ trims, while SV+ and Platinum+ grades get panoramic 14.3-inch displays with Google Built-in. The latter includes Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Play Store integration. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring come standard.
The 2026 Nissan Leaf competes against other affordable EVs, including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, Toyota bZ, and Volkswagen ID.4. Compared to these models, the Leaf stands out with its generous 303-mile all-electric range, simplified charging, and optional panoramic display.
With its sleek styling, comprehensive safety package, and spacious cabin, Nissan's third-generation Leaf offers a compelling blend of practicality and innovation in a growing EV market.
