First appearing in 1996 as a successor to the Audi 80, the Audi A4 was introduced as the German luxury car maker's entry-level brand. From 1996 to 2017, an Avant wagon and a cabriolet version of the A4 have been made available for the United States market. The Audi A4 existed as the premium brand's most economical option in North America until the arrival of the A3 in 2016. Major technical upgrades to the A4 included a continuously variable transmission in 2002, FSI (gasoline direct injection) engines in the 2005 Audi A4 and availability of an eight-speed automatic gearbox in 2011. The latest styling revision for the Audi A4 occurs for the 2017 model year.
