It has been over 25 years since BMW first introduced its iDrive infotainment system. Although it was not always the easiest or most intuitive to use, iDrive makes a significant leap forward with the all-new 2027 BMW iX3. The new Panoramic iDrive features the latest BMW operating system and redefines the digital experience, creating an innovative system to enhance driving. The goal of the new system is to improve driver focus, aligning with BMW’s vision of keeping “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.”

Four main elements comprise Panoramic iDrive: Panoramic Vision, 3D Head-Up Display, the multifunction steering wheel, and the central display screen. The new system seamlessly combines these components, and although it might sound complex, my experience with the new Panoramic iDrive shows that it enhances the experience rather than cause confusion.
The most notable feature of the Panoramic iDrive is the new Panoramic Vision display. Projected onto a narrow black strip that runs across the bottom of the windshield, Panoramic Vision shows the digital driver’s display on the left, with customizable sections on the right that can be manually selected or display relevant information based on the driving mode and situation.

I expected the display would be distracting, but it takes up only a small part of the windshield, and its presentation is clearer than any head-up display I have seen. Its position at eye level makes it easy to view with minimal head or eye movement.
Supplementing the panoramic screen is the more traditional 17.9-inch central touchscreen display, which features matrix backlight technology for a brighter, clearer image. The layout will be familiar to anyone who has driven a recent BMW—it shows a map as the default background and scrollable tiles on the left.
Completing the screen collection is the 3D Head-Up Display, which projects navigation and driver assistance information onto the windshield above the Panoramic Vision display, directly in the driver’s line of sight.
While the left side of the Panoramic Vision display shows driver-specific information, the center and right sections have six customizable slots. The driver can select from over a dozen tiles on the center display, and drag and drop them into any of the six positions. Options include outside temperature, date and time, estimated time to destination, air quality index, and weather.
This section of the Panoramic Vision display can also change based on drive mode. For example, when the iX3 is in Efficient mode, the display shifts to show driving range and expected battery percentage upon arriving at the destination. Conversely, selecting Silent mode turns off all but the driver information while dimming the center display for a more focused experience.
The final piece of the puzzle is the all-new steering wheel with haptic controls and what BMW calls “Shy Tech.” Driver-assistance features are on the left, while content controls are on the right. Shy Tech means that a button does not light up unless its function is currently relevant. For example, suppose a phone call comes in via the Bluetooth connection. In that case, the driver will see a notification on the display screen, and the button on the steering wheel will glow green, intuitively indicating how to answer the call.
The Panoramic iDrive system is a significant advancement for in-car technology, and it is appropriate that BMW is launching it in new iX3. While I have not had the chance to test it on the road, the system was easy to learn and set up, and the Panoramic Vision display’s clear presentation and perfect position make it stand out from competitors. BMW plans to introduce the Panoramic iDrive in all-new and updated models starting in 2026.
