BMW is redefining the driving experience with the new 2027 iX3. This compact electric crossover is the first model of the advanced Neue Klasse, which introduces a new design, drivetrain, and chassis. It also features the latest version of the company's vehicle interface, the BMW Panoramic iDrive. One of the most exciting aspects of this new system is the BMW 3D Head-Up Display (3D HUD) that works with the Panoramic Vision display.
The new iX3's Panoramic Vision projects onto the base of the windshield, but it isn't a head-up display in the traditional sense because it isn’t in the driver’s line of sight and has a blacked-out background. However, when you're sitting in the BMW's driver seat looking at the road, it's the new 3D HUD that appears front and center on the windshield.
This is the first time BMW has combined navigation and advanced driver-assistance features into a single head-up display. Projected as an overlay on the road ahead, the display appears to extend outward in front of the vehicle.
After setting a destination, which can be easily done through the central touchscreen or the BMW Personal Assistant voice interface, information and instructions appear on multiple screens as needed. In the head-up display, directions and graphics appear as if laid out on the road ahead. If a left turn is approaching, the driver receives directions in the HUD to shift to the left lane, then follow the line that looks like it's painted on the road to the left.
At the same time, directions appear in the driver display section of the Panoramic Vision, while navigation directions are shown on the 3D map in the central display.
When active, the driver-assist features like the hands-free Highway Assistant will also display their status in the HUD, showing suggested lane changes and surrounding vehicles. The display also offers a Curve Ahead View that provides visual help for upcoming winding roads.
The main purpose of the new 3D HUD and Panoramic Vision is to keep the driver focused on the road without having to look away for important driving information. During the media presentation for the new iDrive operating system, a BMW spokesperson repeated the phrase "Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road" several times as the goal of Panoramic iDrive. With the information shown in the 3D HUD combined with Panoramic Vision, there is little reason to look away from the road.
When it arrives in the summer of 2026, the 2027 BMW iX3 will be one of the most advanced models in the German automaker's lineup. The 3D Head-Up Display, along with the other features of Panoramic iDrive, offers a futuristic driving experience that should enhance the time spent behind the wheel.
