Introduction - Find Lucid charging stations near you

The 2025 Lucid Gravity isn’t simply a new battery-electric luxury SUV seeking to elbow its way onto the increasing list of models in the same category. It is also a critical attempt by its maker, California-based electric-vehicle (EV) startup Lucid Motors, to gain relevance with luxury vehicle buyers increasingly drawn away from traditional sedans and coupes and toward SUVs.

Intended to expand the brand beyond Lucid’s well-regarded Air sedan, the EV maker positions the Gravity as a vehicle that moves past the typical compromises found in premium SUVs, aiming to combine antithetical aspects like space, performance, sophistication, and efficiency in a single package.

The Gravity is a crucial addition to Lucid Motors’ product lineup, introduced to exploit the reality that SUVs dominate the U.S. luxury-vehicle market. The company is relying on its advanced battery technology, impressive efficiency, and long driving range to distinguish the Gravity from its competitors. Its combination of high-performance acceleration and car-like handling in a large, three-row SUV is eye-opening, and its focus on integrating thoughtful technology features into the driving experience shows promise.

Lucid plans to offer the Gravity in two trim levels: Touring and Grand Touring. As of this writing, only the Grand Touring is available to order through the Lucid Motors consumer website. The Touring trim is the less expensive of the two, with a base price of about $80,000. Lucid's price sheet for the up-level Grand Touring test vehicle I drove listed a base price of $94,900. Options can send the Grand Touring’s price well over the $125,000 mark.

The 2025 Lucid Gravity successfully pulls off a tough visual trick. It offers a sleek, aerodynamic design while still looking like an SUV. Its exterior carries forward the design language first seen on the Lucid Air sedan.

Aerodynamic efficiency is a clear priority, with elements like the wraparound liftgate and clamshell rear end that enhance airflow while maximizing cargo access. Bold front-end styling hides an expansive frunk opening, which offers a seating area appropriate for watching a kids' soccer game or a polo chukker.

Inside, the Gravity offers a spacious and thoughtfully detailed cabin that simultaneously manages to be minimalist and welcoming. Despite an overall length of just 198 inches—compact by three-row SUV standards—the Gravity delivers 111.9 cubic feet of cargo space, including the 8.1-cubic-foot frunk storage. The fold-flat second row and foldable, stowable third row provide flexibility that rivals larger vehicles, and the SUV (amazingly) accommodates two adult passengers in the rearmost seats with surprising comfort.

The wraparound dashboard design, mid-century modern influences, and use of sustainable materials—including reclaimed wood, recycled textiles, and plant-based microsuede—create an environment that feels both premium and responsibly crafted.

Seating comfort is good in every seating position, and design choices like machined rocker extrusions for improved foot clearance aid entry and exit. A panoramic glass roof and expansive side glass enhance the spacious feeling of the cabin.

Ultimately, the Gravity combines high style, real-world functionality, and passenger comfort without obvious compromise. It's not just a sleek luxury EV but is also a competent, everyday family vehicle. The SUV doesn't force buyers to choose between sophistication and practicality. It delivers both.

Independent Expert Opinion: Infotainment, Technology, and Safety - Find Lucid charging stations near you

The 2025 Lucid Gravity's infotainment and technology package makes an excellent first impression, but some teething pains surfaced after further use. The centerpiece of the cockpit is a striking 34-inch OLED main display, paired with a separate 12-inch touchscreen below and a smaller rear-seat console-mounted screen.

Visually, the setup is as good or better than many recently introduced rivals', but my real-world experience in the test vehicle suggested some systems would benefit from further refinement. For example, Apple CarPlay integration—a key expectation for many luxury buyers—was not yet operational, making testing this major connectivity feature impossible.

Lucid's DreamDrive 2 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) shows high potential but is an incomplete story. The hardware is in place for robust semi-autonomous driving, built around a sensor suite including 12 cameras, five radars, one lidar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Yet major advertised features, such as hands-free lane-changing assistance and automatic lane change, were unavailable in the test vehicle. This eliminated the chance to evaluate how the system stacks up against leading competitors from brands like Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla, which offer systems that appear to deliver more semi-autonomous driving features.

Some day-to-day usability issues also surfaced. The navigation system required several resets during the test drive and appeared to struggle with spotty cell coverage, an issue more reliably handled by less expensive vehicles. This raised questions about the Gravity’s software stability, which is particularly important for a software-defined vehicle relying on over-the-air updates to extend and refine its functionality.

While the cabin's design looks sleek, an over-reliance on touchscreen controls can compromise ease of use. Simple tasks like adjusting the mirrors or opening the glovebox required navigating multiple digital menus—a process that could frustrate drivers accustomed to more direct physical controls. While a handful of physical buttons remain for core functions, the overall layout leans heavily on screen interactions, which may not be ideal while driving. The pair of thumb-operated touchpads on the steering wheel ameliorates the issue somewhat.

Overall, the Lucid Gravity’s infotainment and safety technology feature plenty of high-end hardware that promises superior performance, but Lucid could improve the initial software execution and user experience.

Lucid has ambitious targets for its Gravity SUV, and the vehicle is so likable overall that it is easy to climb on the enthusiasm train. But designing a seven-passenger people-hauler that performs like a high-end sport sedan is difficult.

Creating a vehicle that delivers supercar acceleration, plenty of interior space, cargo-carrying flexibility, and long range on a charge has confounded well-established automakers who bring a century-plus of engineering expertise. But the test drive demonstrated that Lucid has largely succeeded in making it all come together coherently.

The first impression from behind the small, almost yoke-like steering wheel is one of surprising agility. Despite a curb weight of 6,048 pounds in three-row form, the Gravity moves with the confidence and nimbleness of a much smaller, sportier vehicle.

Adaptive dampers and an adjustable air suspension allow the Gravity to tailor its ride to the environment, lowering for highway stability or rising to offer up to 9.3 inches of ground clearance for mild off-road use. Rear-wheel steering, available with the Dynamic Handling package, further tightens the turning circle and enhances high-speed stability.

Acceleration is equally impressive. Powered by dual permanent-magnet motors and all-wheel drive, the Gravity produces up to 828 horsepower and 909 pound-feet of torque. In Sprint mode—the most aggressive of three drive settings—the Gravity can reach 60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds. Although I didn’t attempt a full-launch zero-to-60-mph sprint during testing, seat-of-the-pants impressions suggest this figure is entirely believable. Power delivery is smooth, relentless, and remarkably linear, lending the Gravity the feel of a true high-performance machine.

The Gravity's adaptability extends beyond the pavement. Its air suspension's ability to raise the chassis and the preview of its Terrain mode hint at genuine light-to-moderate off-road capability. Meanwhile, Lucid rates the SUV’s towing capacity at 6,000 pounds.

Lucid’s second-generation 123-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery supports an estimated 450 miles of range in the five-passenger version, while the seven-passenger configuration tops out at 437 miles. That equates to an estimated 104 MPGe combined fuel-economy number. Lucid’s top efficiency claim is 3.65 miles/kWh, but my observed efficiency as reported by the test vehicle’s instrumentation was a much lower 2.40 miles/kWh. The test drive route and my enthusiastic use of the accelerator pedal might have led to the less efficient result in what is admittedly a small driving sample.

Lucid’s 926-volt platform enables speedy charging, with up to 400 kilowatt peak charging capacity and the ability to recover up to 200 miles of range in under 11 minutes under ideal conditions. Other mechanical details are equally serious. Traction control, hill-holding, stability control, torque vectoring by braking, and regenerative braking all perform without drama. Among the Gravity’s bag of tricks is one-pedal driving.

The Lucid Gravity isn’t just fast for an SUV; driving across a wide range of conditions is legitimately enjoyable. While some questions remain about efficiency, consistency, and the eventual robustness of its off-road capabilities, the Gravity’s mechanical underpinnings and dynamic poise make it a compelling vehicle.

The 2025 Lucid Gravity shows strong potential that could shift perceptions of what a luxury SUV can be. It is not just an impressive electric SUV, but a well-rounded vehicle with capabilities that outdo conventional luxury crossovers.

That said, the test vehicle highlighted areas that need further development before the Gravity can be considered a true segment leader. While it outperforms rivals like the BMW iX and Cadillac Escalade IQ in certain respects, it, like the competitive Rivian R1S, still lags behind in the quality and ease of its driver-vehicle interface. That's where more established competitors currently offer a more refined and consistent experience.
