2026 Kia EV4 Preview

Liz Kim | Apr 22, 2025

A new, more affordable electric vehicle (EV) is on the way, called the 2026 Kia EV4. Kia says it is the automaker's first EV sedan, and although it has a rakish roofline that is more reminiscent of a sportback, it has a trunk lid and not a rear hatch. In any case, with the 2026 EV4, Kia intends to fulfill the wishes of those who want a compact, affordable electric car and don't need the additional cargo capacity or all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability of an SUV. It joins the EV6 and EV9 in Kia's EV lineup.

Kia will offer the 2026 EV4 in three trim levels: Light, Wind, and GT-Line. As of this writing, Hyundai hasn't released full specifications or trim level information for the EV4. However, it will offer standard and long-range battery packs, next-generation regenerative braking, and DC fast-charging capability to bring the battery from a 10-percent to an 80-percent charge in about half an hour.

2026 Kia EV4 Rear Quarter View Action

Kia designed the new EV4 to echo the techno-futuristic styling of its EV6 and EV9 electric SUVs. However, the car also recalls the K4 sedan, EVs such as the Toyota bZ4X, and even the Cadillac CT4.

The EV4's boomerang-shaped daytime running lights and stubby, sharply slanted hood are all its own. While the EV4 is assuredly a sedan, it has a fastback silhouette with a dramatically sloped roofline, just like a sportback. From some angles, due to the squared-off rear quarter windows, the rear pillars can look almost like flying buttresses bracketing a small cargo bed.

For sure, the EV4 is unusual and attention-grabbing. And it looks best in GT-Line spec with 19-inch wheels and sportier styling details. The 19s are an upgrade over the 17s on the Light and Wind.

2026 Kia EV4 Interior Dashboard

The Kia EV4 interior design concept is open, modern, and minimalistic, with a dual-toned color theme providing contrast.

A nearly 30-inch panoramic display dominates the dashboard. It includes a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a 5-inch climate display, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Below it, air vents separated by a stereo volume thumb wheel serve as a foundation for a touch-sensing bar offering shortcuts to specific infotainment menus. Under the air vents, Kia presents a strip of metallic piano-key climate controls and a hazard flasher button.

Drivers shift the EV4 using a stalk jutting from the lower right portion of the steering column. That design frees up space between the seats, where Kia provides a multi-tiered collection of trays, cupholders, and bins. Images of the GT-Line's interior depict a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Kia confirms that all EV4 trims will have dual-zone automatic climate control and rear air conditioning vents. Available upgrades include a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated front seats. The EV4 GT-Line seats appear wrapped in artificial leather with a distinctive pattern that should leave some interesting lines on occupants' legs if they wear shorts.

2026 Kia EV4 Side View

Kia builds the EV4 on the Hyundai Motor Group's E-GMP platform, which numerous Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia electric vehicles share. It is a skateboard-style EV platform, and in the EV4, there are two battery choices. The EV4 Light has a 58.3-kilowatt-hour (kWh) standard-range pack, while the EV4 Wind and GT-Line have a long-range 81.4-kWh battery. Both supply their power to a 150-kilowatt (kW) motor that turns the car's front wheels with 201 horsepower.

According to Kia, the EV4 Light provides 235 miles of range, while the EV4 Wind and GT-Line supply 330 miles. The EV4 has a 400-volt architecture, and Kia says it takes about 29 minutes to recharge the Light from 10 to 80 percent at a DC fast charger. The Wind and GT-Line take a little longer, at 31 minutes. Kia equips the EV4 with a NACS charging port for Tesla Supercharger compatibility.

Kia also employs its latest regenerative braking technology in the new EV4. The i-Pedal 3.0 system provides one-pedal driving capability and recaptures energy when braking. It also works in reverse and retains the most recent setting when the driver gets in and restarts the EV4.

Kia will provide EV4 buyers with a long list of standard advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Two confirmed features deserve highlighting, including Highway Driving Assist (HDA) and Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA).

The HDA system combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance to provide a hands-on highway driving-assistance system. So, it has an accurate name. The RSPA is a fully autonomous active parking assistance technology that can move the EV4 into and out of tight parking and garage spaces while the driver stands nearby outside the car.

Ever hunger for a different vibe in your car's cabin? The EV4's infotainment system allows you to personalize the 30-inch display to reflect your tastes, and the available 64-color ambient lighting further tailors the interior aesthetic to your preferences. Digital key technology is also available for the EV4, transforming your smartphone into the car’s key.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard, and Kia's AI Assistant technology boasts machine learning to become a better digital voice assistant over time. Thanks to the car's V2L technology, you can charge external devices like laptops, portable speakers, and more using the EV4's battery.

If you're looking for a small and affordable EV, your choices include the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Fiat 500e, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, Mini Cooper Electric, and Nissan Leaf. The Kia EV4 adds another option to this list, and if you like the way it looks, you'll probably like everything else about it.
