For more than 25 years, the BMW X5 has helped to define the luxury SUV segment. Now, the redesigned fifth-generation 2027 BMW X5 arrives with the automaker’s Neue Klasse styling, a roomier interior, the latest technology, and your choice between mild-hybrid gas, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and electric powertrains.

When the all-new 2027 X5 goes on sale in October 2026, it will initially be available as an X5 40 xDrive, an all-wheel-drive SUV equipped with a turbocharged six-cylinder gas engine. Through early 2027, more variants arrive, including the X5 40 with rear-wheel drive, the X5 50e xDrive PHEV, and the iX5 60 xDrive electric vehicle (EV). BMW says an M-tuned, V8-powered variant is also coming.
Across this lineup, the base prices range from about $70,000 to around $80,000, suggesting the all-electric model will not command a significant premium. Those 2027 BMW X5 prices do not include the destination charge to ship the SUV to a local dealership from the Spartanburg, South Carolina, assembly plant that supplies global markets.
The X5 40 has a mild-hybrid turbo six generating a robust 394 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. Building from that engine, the X5 50e xDrive adds an electric motor and a battery pack to provide an estimated 44 miles of electric-only range and 483 combined hp. When drivers have depleted the electric range, the gas engine continues the journey.
For fully electric operation, choose the iX5 60 xDrive, which has a dual-motor propulsion system with 570 hp and an estimated 435 miles of range. Using a public DC fast charger under ideal conditions, it should take about 22 minutes to recharge the iX5 from 10 to 80 percent, according to BMW.

Though the new X5’s overall proportions are similar, BMW’s Neue Klasse design details represent a significant departure from the outgoing X5. The highlights include a vertical twin-kidney grille, double-X daytime running light illumination, and door releases incorporated into the greenhouse via BMW Winglets. Wheel sizes up to 23 inches are available. Fans of the fourth-generation X5’s split tailgate design should note that the new 2027 X5 drops that feature in favor of a traditional single-piece liftgate.
A 2.4-inch wheelbase stretch adds interior room, mainly for rear passengers. A panoramic sunroof, customizable ambient lighting, and BMW’s Veganza artificial leather are standard, with genuine leather available, along with real slate stone and glass interior materials. Other optional interior upgrades include four-zone automatic climate control and ventilated and massaging front seats.
Panoramic iDrive technology is standard and runs on new software called BMW Operating System X. As part of this multi-display array, BMW Panoramic Vision is a strip of screen running the width of the dashboard at the base of the windshield.
In the middle of the dashboard, an asymmetric 17.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, and it includes a new Intelligent Personal Assistant with Amazon Alexa and AI for conversational queries, commands, and operation of the SUV’s features. An 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, 14.6-inch front passenger touchscreen, and 3D head-up display are available upgrades.
The new X5 includes more standard safety features, along with technology enhancements. For example, the automatic emergency braking and automatic emergency steering system can respond to animals in addition to pedestrians and other vehicles. The safe exit assistance system can tell when a cyclist is approaching from behind and delay a door opening until they pass.
Available advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) include Highway Assistant for hands-free driving at up to 85 mph and Parking Assistant Professional, which allows remote control access via smartphone to command the SUV to park in or exit from a tight parking space autonomously.

Three of the BMW X5’s primary rivals are either redesigned, refreshed, or otherwise improved for the 2027 model year. They include the all-new Audi Q7, updated Mercedes-Benz GLE, and a Volvo XC90 with an available plug-in hybrid powertrain that provides an estimated 73 miles of electric range. Other alternatives could include the pavement-friendly Acura MDX or off-road-ready Lexus GX, while the electric BMW iX5 may count the Cadillac Lyriq and Rivian R1S as competitors.
Clearly, the midsize luxury SUV segment offers plenty of choices. However, based on the information BMW has released as of this writing, the redesigned 2027 X5 has a good chance of continuing to set the bar in the segment it helped create back in 1999.
