The Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact crossover SUV with ample passenger space. For the 2026 model year, it receives a revised trim lineup and a new optional engine. The SEL R-Line Turbo replaces the previous SEL R-Line. The new trim level adds a second engine to the Tiguan lineup: a 268-horsepower four-cylinder, up 67 hp from the base powertrain. With small SUVs, you sometimes have to make concessions on rear-seat legroom. If you want a model in that segment with plenty of space for your friends in the second row, the Tiguan is worth considering. It offers 40.2 inches of rear-seat legroom, which is solid for the class. By comparison, the Toyota RAV4 offers 37.8 inches, and the Subaru Forester has 39.4 inches.
Volkswagen offers 2026 Tiguan buyers four trims. You can choose from the base S, the midrange SE and SE R-Line Black, and the range-topping SEL R-Line Turbo.
Although it is the entry-level trim, the S comes nicely equipped. It features 17-inch wheels and LED exterior lighting, with heated side mirrors. The cabin includes heated front seats, cloth upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. You also get appealing technology features, including a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, voice recognition, wireless smartphone charging, and wireless device integration.
Next is the SE, which adds 19-inch wheels and a power liftgate. The cabin features synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and ambient lighting with 10 color options. The SE R-Line Black trim builds on the SE with 20-inch black alloy wheels, black exterior accents, and a panoramic sunroof. The cabin includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The new SEL R-Line Turbo is the most expensive trim in the range. It is similar to the SE R-Line Black, but it does not include the black wheels or black exterior accents. It adds an upgraded engine and a hands-free rear liftgate. The cabin features 30-color adjustable ambient lighting, three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and heated second-row outboard seats.
The 2026 Tiguan features a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 201 hp. It produces 207 pound-feet of torque with front-wheel drive and 221 pound-feet with all-wheel drive. The SEL R-Line Turbo features a more powerful version of the base engine, delivering 268 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. All 2026 Tiguan SUVs are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and deliver up to 29 mpg in combined driving.
All 2026 Tiguan SUVs include valuable driver assistance features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning.
The compact SUV class features capable choices. Rivals such as the Chevrolet Equinox and Kia Sportage have lower base prices than Volkswagen's SUV. Still, the Tiguan is a worthwhile choice for its roominess and its potent optional engine.
