2026 Nissan Altima Preview

Zac Johnson | Jan 27, 2026

While SUVs and crossovers continue to dominate American driveways, the Nissan Altima midsize sedan returns for the 2026 model year with a tighter lineup, updated technology, and slightly higher pricing, all wrapped in a familiar design.

For 2026, Nissan reduces the Altima lineup to just two trim levels: SV and SR. The previous base S and upscale SL trims are no longer available. The SR adds paddle shifters, a sport-tuned suspension, and sport exhaust tips, giving it a hint of performance, enough to stand out from the value-oriented version, but not enough to be considered a proper sport sedan.

Styling carries over from 2025, with no noticeable exterior changes. A Midnight Edition package debuts on the SR, adding a blacked-out grille, darkened window trim, darkened badges, and black 19-inch rims. Color options include Super Black, Pearl White TriCoat, Tactical Green Metallic, or Gray Sky Pearl.

Inside, the cabin remains essentially unchanged. The layout stays the same, and an 8-inch touchscreen serves as the base model's de facto infotainment display. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is available with the SV Special Edition package and standard on the SR trim. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are included on both trims, and wireless compatibility remains available.

To get dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a moonroof, or a nine-speaker Bose premium audio system, you will need to upgrade to an optional package. Luckily, remote start is standard.

Pricing starts at $28,825, including the destination charge, for the base Altima and rises to $30,325 for the SR. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard. For $1,400, all-wheel drive (AWD) is available on either trim.

Powering the Altima is the familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), sending 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. Altimas with AWD see a slight drop in power and torque. According to Nissan, FWD versions achieve 30 mpg combined, while AWD Altimas achieve 28 mpg combined.

Nissan Safety Shield 360 comes standard, bundling advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and lane departure warning. Optional features include ProPilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, and a surround view camera, depending on the trim level and package selected.

In a shrinking midsize sedan market that includes the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Toyota Camry, the 2026 Altima does not try to reinvent the wheel with significant design shifts or hybrid powertrains. Instead, it sticks to a familiar formula: reasonable pricing, expanded technology offerings, and available AWD. For buyers who still want a traditional four-door sedan but are not looking for anything flashy, the Altima remains a straightforward, predictable option.
