The 2026 BMW X5's powertrain lineup offers something for every type of driver. Three powertrains are available: a six-cylinder, a plug-in hybrid, and a potent V8. All X5 crossover SUVs have an eight-speed automatic transmission, and you can choose from four sub-models: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, and M60i.

The base setup is a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. You will find this powertrain under the hood of the rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i and the all-wheel-drive (AWD) xDrive40i. If you want a more frugal option, opt for the plug-in hybrid powertrain. It features a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, electric motors, and a battery pack, and it generates 483 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque. The xDrive50e features this powertrain and comes standard with AWD.

Those seeking the quickest acceleration will likely choose the third and final powertrain—a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8—which, like the base setup, uses mild hybrid technology. Available only with AWD, it delivers 523 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque, powering the M60i.

The sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and xDrive50e feature 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, and a panoramic sunroof. Their cabins include heated and power-adjustable front sport seats, wireless smartphone charging, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The M60i adds a bevy of performance upgrades. These include an M Sport exhaust system, an M Sport differential, and an adaptive M suspension.

Mild-hybrid models achieve up to 25 mpg in combined driving. The PHEV delivers 60 MPGe combined when using electric power, with an all-electric range of 40 miles. When using the gas engine, the PHEV delivers 22 mpg combined.

The X5 comes standard with useful driver assistance features. All versions include forward collision warning, adaptive headlights, active blind spot warning, and lane keeping assistance.

A semi-autonomous driving system is optional and allows hands-free driving at up to 85 mph on selected highways. You can also equip this SUV with parking sensors and a surround view camera.
