With better versatility, advanced technology, improved cargo management, and enhanced off-road capability courtesy of a new Tremor off-road trim level, the heavily refreshed 2025 Ford Expedition large SUV emphasizes family fun.

Ford offers the new Expedition in standard- and extended-wheelbase configurations, the latter dubbed Expedition Max, with seating for up to eight passengers. In addition to Active, Platinum, and King Ranch trims, the off-road-focused Tremor version joins the lineup in 2025. Buyers will choose from among two twin-turbocharged V6 engines, depending on trim. An automatic transmission is standard, as is rear-wheel drive (2WD). Four-wheel drive (4WD) is standard on the Tremor and available on all other trims.

Though not revolutionary, the 2025 Ford Expedition sees some exterior updates, highlighted by a revised grille, new headlights and taillights, and several new wheel designs. There’s also available new exterior zone lighting that allows you to illuminate specific areas around the SUV.
Around the back, the new Ford Split Gate with an integrated cargo management system provides flexible seating or a table, handy for tailgating or dining at the campsite. The lower portion of the tailgate includes an available seatback and can support up to 500 pounds, while the upper portion raises like a traditional SUV liftgate. With the available Open-on-Approach feature, you can access the cargo area simply by standing near the tailgate for a few seconds with the key fob on your person.
Tremor-specific exterior touches include off-road auxiliary lights behind the grille, running boards, and underbody shielding for the front axle, transfer case, and fuel tank.

Considering its primary purpose is catering to families, the new Expedition offers several innovative features that make traveling with kids easier. One such feature is the available new Flex Powered Console between the front seats. Pressing a button lets the console slide nearly 8 inches to the rear, opening a secure storage area for front-seat passengers. Those in the second row can access the storage area while benefitting from audio and climate controls and cupholders on the console's back side.
Second-row passengers also benefit from an available new Digital Device Holder on the back of the front-seat headrests, making it easier to watch a video on a smartphone or tablet while eating or drinking. The available new Third-Row Flexible Seating system has a 40/20/40 split-folding third-row bench seat that allows you to carry long, skinny items like skis or fishing poles simply by folding the middle portion of the rear bench seat.

The base engine in the 2025 Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 producing 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. It powers the Active, King Ranch, and Platinum trims. A high-output version of that same engine boosts power output to 440 hp and 510 pound-feet of torque. It’s standard on the new Tremor off-road variant and optional on the Platinum. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard on all versions of the 2025 Expedition.
Like most other big SUVs, RWD is standard on most versions of the 2025 Expedition, the exception being the new Tremor, which has standard 4WD with an electronic-locking rear differential. You can still get 4WD on the other trims, but it doesn’t include the E-locker. Standard wheel sizes range from 18 to 22 inches, depending on trim. Maximum towing capacity is 9,600 pounds when properly equipped with a weight-distributing hitch, 7,000 pounds without it.
The new Tremor includes a handful of off-road components, including a Rock Crawl drive mode and a Trail Control system including Trail Turn Assist and Trail 1-Pedal, essentially an off-road version of one-pedal driving. Additionally, Ford equips 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires on 18-inch Dark Carbonized Gray-painted aluminum wheels. Ford says the Tremor has a best-in-class ground clearance of 10.6 inches.

A new, driver-focused 24-inch panoramic digital display and a separate infotainment touchscreen comprise the new “Ford Digital Experience” in the 2025 Expedition. The wide 24-inch display sits above the steering wheel—closer to the driver’s natural sight line—and houses the gauges and other helpful information.
The centrally located touchscreen is the gateway to infotainment. The Google-based system includes easy access to various vehicle functions, Alexa Built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, and internet access, all via the voice-activated Google Assistant.
To make the most out of the Ford Digital Experience, owners can opt for the available Ford Connectivity package, which adds Wi-Fi hotspot capability for up to 10 personal devices at a range of up to 50 feet, Google Play apps for gaming, music streaming, video, and more, and Google Maps.
On the safety front, the 2025 Expedition comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0, which provides a comprehensive list of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Other standard items include automatic high-beam headlights and surround-view and reversing cameras. Ford also equips all 2025 Expedition SUVs with the latest version of its BlueCruise hands-free driving hardware, with nearly 90 percent of the lineup able to access the feature.
Families that travel with a camper or boat will surely appreciate the Expedition’s helpful towing tech, such as Pro-Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
The 2025 model year is shaping up to be the year of the full-size SUV, as several of the Expedition’s direct competitors are either redesigned or refreshed. The Nissan Armada is all-new, featuring a more spacious cabin, new tech, and a new Pro-4X off-road version. Additionally, Chevrolet overhauled the Suburban and Tahoe for 2025, and the mechanically similar GMC Yukon and Yukon XL received similar treatment.
Other big SUV models include the Jeep Wagoneer/Wagoneer L and Toyota Sequoia—each new or refreshed in the last several years. If you want something more luxurious, consider the refreshed 2025 Lincoln Navigator, which provides similar space with premium amenities.
