Many automakers offer sport-infused trim lines and models to attract performance enthusiasts to their brands. Some of the more prominent ones include Audi S, BMW M, Cadillac V, Dodge SRT, Mercedes AMG, Nissan Nismo, and Toyota GR. In the past several years, Korean automaker Hyundai has joined the race-inspired ranks with its own specialized sub-brand, 'N.' Split into two categories—Hyundai N and Hyundai N Line—this performance portfolio brings vehicles built and intended for high-intensity driving enjoyment.
First, let's understand the N designation, which has two derivations. The first is Namyang, a district in South Korea that is home to Hyundai's Global R&D Center. This vehicle development hub is the birthplace of Hyundai's full model line.
But that's not all that N signifies. It also stands for the legendary Nürburgring racetrack in Germany, where Hyundai dynamically tunes and tests its high-performance models through a series of hairpin corners and fast straightaways. Essentially, Hyundai engineers its N vehicles with technology that emerges from the brand's racing DNA.
The N story began with Hyundai's re-entry into the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2012. For the next several years came a series of highly decorated N racecars that propelled the brand's reputation in motorsports. From this success, Hyundai launched the N division for Hyundai consumers.
The first N vehicle for sale was the Hyundai Veloster N, launched for the 2019 model year. With a newly engineered dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT), many regarded this setup as the most sophisticated DCT offered in a mainstream passenger car. Its purpose and intention, above all, was to exhilarate.
DCTs exist because they offer performance advantages despite their negatives in terms of around-town drivability. Downsides can include delayed engagement, abrupt gear changes, and all-around clunkiness. However, Hyundai engineered the Veloster N DCT to eliminate those vulnerabilities while allowing quick shifting thanks to performance-enabling gear ratios and the employment of the "wet clutch."
The "wet-clutch" configuration is the key to this new transmission's ability to perform on city streets and racetracks. For the performance side, this DCT employs oil to improve cooling and facilitate smooth gear changes, making it more effective in high-torque applications like the Veloster N and other models. At the same time, Hyundai fits the N DCT with electronic actuators that operate the double clutch, which the automaker says enhances drivability and fuel efficiency.

Hyundai hinted at the Ioniq 5 N earlier in 2023 and unveiled the hot hatchback at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. It will be the first Hyundai model to take N-level performance into electrification when it arrives.
What's the difference between Hyundai N and Hyundai N Line performance? The automaker splits its N performance arm into N Line and N categories. Each aims at specific driving intentions.
Hyundai outfits N Line variants with race-inspired styling and performance upgrades that set them apart from standard trims. The sporty design elements boost both looks and aerodynamics. With more power, better handling, and premium tires over standard Hyundai models, N Line brings enhanced performance and a balanced combination of tech, safety, and premium amenities. Hyundai doesn't tune N Line models for track use like it has engineered full-fledged N models.

2023 Hyundai Kona N Line—A sport-performance small SUV with aggressive looks. It has a 195-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with available all-wheel drive and gets up to 35 miles per gallon of fuel. Interior features include digital gauges and race-inspired sport seats. Base price: $25,850.
2023 Hyundai Tucson N Line—An SUV with aggressively styled front and rear designs and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. Engine output is 187 hp, and the Tucson N Line returns up to 32 miles per gallon. All-wheel drive is optional. The interior features sport seats with N badging. Base price: $33,325.
2023 Hyundai Elantra N Line—A sporty compact sedan with a 201-hp, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that yields up to 36 miles per gallon. Exterior features on the Elantra N Line include an aggressive front grille, 18-inch wheels, and chrome twin-tip exhaust. Base price: $27,050.
2024 Hyundai Sonata N Line—The most potent Sonata ever, producing 290 hp and 311 pound-feet of torque, is refreshed for 2024. Fuel economy reaches up to 33 miles per gallon. Quick steering and a sport-tuned suspension give the Sonata N Line agile and responsive handling. The 19-inch wheels give the car a serious road presence. Base price: $34,325 (2023 model).
2023 Hyundai Sonata N Line Night—The darker version of the Sonata N Line. The car attains an edgier look with dark chrome badging, carbon fiber rear lip spoiler, and matte black 19-inch alloy wheels with carbon fiber center caps and red brake calipers. Base price: $33,750.
On the other side of the Hyundai performance tree, the N branch focuses on track-ready power, engineering, and technology. Honed by rigorous testing, Hyundai creates its N models for enthusiasts who crave high performance and take their vehicles to the racetrack. Hyundai designed the suspension, transmission, limited-slip differential, steering, and brakes for maximum driving dynamics. The design highlights N-exclusive badging and aggressive styling.

2023 Hyundai Kona N—Hyundai's first SUV to wear an N badge. This high-performance utility has 276 hp and 289 pound-feet of torque. Performance features on the Kona N include customizable drive modes, 19-inch wheels, and a dual-tip exhaust system. Base price: $34,950.
2023 Hyundai Elantra N—A balanced, high-performance small sedan for both time-attack laps and daily driving. The Elantra N yields 276 hp and 31 miles per gallon on the highway. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard issue. Base price: $32,900.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N—The forthcoming high-performance variant of the all-electric Ioniq 5 SUV will be capable of pumping out 641 hp thanks in part to its N-Grin Boost mode. The Ioniq 5 N will be the brand's first all-electric vehicle with an N badge.
With both N and N Line performance offerings, Hyundai serves buyers looking for a more spirited and race-inspired experience from a mainstream auto brand.
