With a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, and a limited-slip differential, the new 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor brings enhanced off-road capability and rugged aesthetics to its popular three-row family SUV.
Acknowledging increased buyer interest in vehicles that can help them escape to and enjoy the great outdoors, Ford has announced the new Explorer Tremor, which brings rugged looks and a small handful of off-roading upgrades to give the popular SUV the chops to tackle more challenging terrain than other Explorers. The new Tremor variant is the spiritual successor to the Explorer Timberline, which, ironically, Ford discontinued for the 2025 model year.
The Tremor treatment starts with a one-inch suspension lift, with Ford engineers incorporating specially tuned springs and sway bars. The additional ride height improves the SUV’s approach and departure angles—an important element when off-roading. A standard four-wheel-drive (4WD) system with a limited-slip differential and Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires further enhances the Tremor’s off-road capability in mud, sand, gravel, or other loose terrain.
Auxiliary off-road lights aid with visibility. Meanwhile, front and rear skid plates look cool and help protect vital mechanical components underneath.
The standard engine on the Explorer Tremor is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost producing 300 horsepower. Buyers can opt for a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 400 hp and 415 pound-feet of torque—the same engine found in the sporty Explorer ST. Both engines work with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to the mechanical upgrades, the Tremor adds a dose of visual excitement to set it apart from other Explorers. Most notable are the front tow hooks, upper grille trim, wheel spokes, and exterior badging painted in “electric spice,” a medium orange color. It’s particularly impactful on the Tremor-specific gloss-black 18-inch wheels. Each wheel features one spoke (the one with the tire valve stem) painted in the special hue that makes them “pop.”
There’s more spiciness inside the Explorer Tremor. The SUV has electric spice stitching on the steering wheel, dashboard, center console, headrests, and seatbacks. Again, the pops of color add to the aesthetic.
While the Explorer Tremor’s raison d’être is enhanced off-road capability, Ford also equips the SUV with plenty of creature comforts. Standard advanced technology features include Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 and the Ford Digital Experience. Buyers may also opt for a 14-speaker B&O audio system and BlueCruise 1.5, the latter providing hands-free driving on certain highways in North America.
Automakers continue targeting those in the market for a three-row family SUV who want more go-almost-anywhere capability. As such, the Explorer Tremor has at least a half dozen competitors, including the Chevrolet Traverse Z71, GMC Acadia AT4, Honda Pilot TrailSport, Hyundai Santa Fe XRT, Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek, and Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road. While none are what you’d consider extreme off-roaders, they all provide added capability with unique style.
