Jeep is a globally aspirational brand, defined mainly by the iconic Wrangler and its ancestors. Top and doors off, the Wrangler epitomizes the rugged individualism and spirit of adventure that characterizes America and its citizens. It is a rolling symbol of fun, freedom, and determination. But, as people who buy the Wrangler often find out, idealizing ownership of one and actually driving one every day are two completely different things.

That's where the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in. Like the Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee seats up to five people and can go places and do things that most SUVs can't. Unlike the Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee is a civilized daily driver, comfortable, quiet, and far more refined. You can't remove the roof and doors, but you'll also be a much happier camper most of the time.

Redesigned for 2022, the Grand Cherokee comes in two flavors. The first is the 2-row, 5-passenger version that is the subject of this review. The 5-passenger 2022 Grand Cherokee lineup launches with Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trim levels. Initially, Jeep offers a standard V6 engine with rear-wheel (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD), or a V8 engine with 4WD. A Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) model arrives in 2022.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee competes in the Midsize SUV market segment. According to data collected from verified new-vehicle buyers for the J.D. Power 2021 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, 56% of previous-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee buyers are male, exactly matching the Midsize SUV segment. The median age of a Grand Cherokee buyer is 57 years (vs. 58 for the segment).

Getting In and Getting Comfortable

Unless you've raised the available Quadra-Lift air suspension to maximize ground clearance, as I did during an off-roading adventure in the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, this SUV is easy enough to get into and out of. That's especially true if you kneel the SUV's air suspension using the Exit Mode, which drops the Grand Cherokee to its lowest setting in just seven seconds.

Regardless of the trim level, each test vehicle had a power-adjustable driver's seat that offered plenty of comfort and support. Even the cloth-upholstered Laredo had heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, and the Summit Reserve's supple premium leather chairs came with ventilation and a massage function.

Once you're aboard, you'll discover improved outward visibility compared to the previous-generation Grand Cherokee. Partly, this is due to the lower beltline and greater glass area. Still, the new Grand Cherokee also offers a variety of camera views, including a rear camera mirror and an off-roading camera that looks forward and, on the display screen, overlays the projected tire path onto the upcoming terrain.

The control layout is straightforward, but the gloss black trim in some models can suffer from reflections that make them hard to see and use. Also, Jeep uses a rotary knob for a shifter, and it took me a few tries to get the hang of it. Too often, I chose Drive instead of Park, released the brake, and started to get out before realizing the dang thing was moving.

A 10.25-inch digital instrumentation display is standard, and most versions include an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. A larger 10.1-inch screen is available in all but Laredo trim. Beneath the infotainment system, a mix of stereo and climate controls offers quick access to frequently used functions.

Every version of the Grand Cherokee reflects quality. In fact, when you drive the Laredo, it feels more substantial than you expect of a base-trim model. Many vehicles feel engineered to a minimum standard and then get extra sound-deadening material, leather, wood, and technology in order to pass the premium test. By contrast, the new Grand Cherokee sounds and feels like it is built to a higher standard, and then Jeep figured out how to discount it to hit the Laredo's price point. In any case, if your budget dictates getting the Laredo, you won't feel like you settled for less.

Rear-seat room is tight for adults, and the hard plastic front seatbacks are painful when knees and shins encounter them. Grand Cherokee buyers who plan to transport taller passengers regularly will want the roomier Grand Cherokee L model.

According to Jeep, the Grand Cherokee's new Uconnect 5 infotainment technology offers a dramatically faster response to inputs, crisp and clean high-resolution graphics, greater ability to customize content and save preferences, and an improved user experience. Over-the-air software updates improve the technology over time.

Highlights of the Grand Cherokee's standard Uconnect 5 system include:

  • 8.4-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth connectivity for two smartphones
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Amazon Alexa integration
  • SiriusXM 360L satellite radio

Depending on the trim level and equipment, upgrades include:

  • Navigation
  • SiriusXM Guardian connected services
  • 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system
  • 19-speaker McIntosh high-end audio system

Pairing my iPhone XS to Bluetooth was not a problem, and setting up personal preferences is relatively easy—especially if you're comfortable with modern technology. The voice-recognition system also works well, responding quickly and accurately to nearly all my standard test commands and questions.

There is a clear progression in terms of audio system quality. The basic setup in the Laredo was merely adequate, and the Alpine speakers in the Limited were an improvement. But they didn't come anywhere close to the outstanding McIntosh components in the Overland and Summit Reserve test vehicles.

What It's Like to Drive the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee is fun. They sit tall on the road and feature a standard suspension that provides a compliant ride without entirely filtering what's happening with the tires at the road surface. Trailhawks have an off-road suspension that is firmer and all-terrain tires that hum on the pavement. An adaptive-damping Quadra-Lift air suspension is available, eliminating unwanted ride and body motions while raising for extra ground clearance or lowering for easier entry and exit.

But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's talk 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee specs.

The standard engine is a tried-and-true 3.6-liter V6 making 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It powers the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission unless you opt for one of three 4WD systems. The V6 can tow up to 6,200 pounds.

A more robust and satisfying but ultimately thirsty 5.7-liter V8 engine is available, and it requires you to buy 4WD. With 357 horses on tap, it's not much more potent than the V6. But the 390 pound-feet of torque represents a big jump in motive force. Maximum towing with the engine tops out at 7,200 pounds, and the V8 also uses an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Over nearly 100 miles of driving, I averaged a measly 17 mpg in combined driving with the V8. Believe it or not, that matches Jeep's estimate for the engine. The V6 proved more efficient, returning 21.3 mpg in combined driving, slightly better than its estimate of 21 mpg.

Owners didn't like the previous-generation Grand Cherokee's fuel economy, and they're unlikely to rate this new one much higher. Perhaps some will choose the upcoming Grand Cherokee 4xe, a PHEV version of the SUV that will offer a handful of electric-only miles and what should be improved efficiency when driven as a gasoline-electric hybrid. The 4xe arrives sometime in 2022.

The three 4WD systems are as follows:

  • Quadra-Trac I—An active 4WD system with driveline disconnect technology, Quadra-Trac I powers the rear wheels and, when they slip, automatically sends power to the front wheels for added traction. There is no transfer case, so this 4WD system is best for use in the snow or for light off-roading activities. It is available only with the V6 engine.
  • Quadra-Trac II—Quadra-Trac II is also an active 4WD system with driveline disconnect technology, but it includes a 2-speed transfer case with low-range gearing. That makes it more suitable for challenging terrain. You can get this 4WD system with the V6 or V8 engine.
  • Quadra-Drive II—With this 4WD system, you get a 2-speed transfer case and an electronic-locking rear differential. Jeep says Quadra-Drive II can deliver all of the engine's power to a single rear wheel, if necessary, which is why it comes standard with Trailhawk trim. Quadra-Drive II is also offered on the Summit and Summit Reserve and is compatible with both the V6 and V8 engines.

I drove several Grand Cherokees for this review, but the only one I took off-road was a Trailhawk. Here's what makes the Trailhawk special:

  • Quadra-Drive II
  • 18-inch wheels wearing 265/50 Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires
  • Quadra-Lift air suspension supplying 11.3 inches of maximum ground clearance and 24 inches of maximum water-fording capability
  • 35.7-degree approach angle
  • 24.4-degree breakover angle
  • 30.2-degree departure angle
  • Front sway-bar disconnect system
  • Full underbody skid plates
  • Front and rear recovery hooks
  • Glare-reducing matte-black hood decal
  • Selec-Speed Control off-road cruise control
  • Integrated off-road camera

Trust me when I tell you that if you're planning serious off-roading excursions, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is the version of the SUV you'll want to get. Jeep put us on a trail that showcased every single one of the Trailhawk's features, and it emerged almost totally unscathed.

Among my favorite features were the front sway-bar disconnect system, which increases front-wheel articulation, and the Selec-Speed Control, which allows a driver to focus on steering over, around, and between obstacles without worrying about acceleration and braking.

However, the most helpful feature was the forward-view camera. Not only does it provide a clear 180-degree view of what's directly in front of the Grand Cherokee, but it also overlays yellow predicted tire paths on the display screen so that you can add exactly the right amount of steering to clear obstacles and avoid danger.

Undoubtedly, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk earns its Trail Rated fender badge. But the majority of buyers won't subject their vehicles to similar extremes. Instead, they'll drive their Grand Cherokees to and from work, around town schlepping kids and running errands, and taking road trips.

Fortunately, the new 2022 Grand Cherokee is as satisfying on the pavement as it is when the road ends and the wilderness begins. The V6 provides satisfactory acceleration, and though it can sound a little loud and unrefined at times, it weighs less than the V8 and is more fuel-efficient. In turn, you can drive a Grand Cherokee V6 farther on a tank of gas, and it will feel more athletic in corners.

Still, if you can afford the added cost to purchase the V8 as well as pay for the extra fuel it consumes, the 5.7-liter delivers effortless and robust power, and it sounds terrific as it goes about its business. Also, for maximum towing capability, the V8 engine is a must.

Of the Grand Cherokees I sampled, the Overland V8 supplied the quickest acceleration and best engine and exhaust note, and the Limited V6 with optional 20-inch wheels offered the most nimble handling. But it was the rough-and-tumble Trailhawk V6 that proved the most impressive to drive.

Simply knowing that you can take your SUV almost anywhere at almost any time is a fundamental tenet of Jeep ownership. And the Trailhawk delivers on that promise better than the others.

Active Driving Assist Review

Additionally, depending on the trim level and equipment, you can add the following safety features to the 2022 Grand Cherokee:

Active Driving Assist is also available as an option with Overland trim and as standard equipment for the Summit and Summit Reserve. This hands-on Level 2 semi-autonomous driving aid pairs the adaptive cruise control with the lane-centering assistance system to help reduce fatigue during highway travel.

On the two-lane highways of Utah, Active Driving Assist worked smoothly and accurately, making it easy to trust. However, on tighter curves, the system would issue warnings on the head-up display and the digital instrumentation, warning the driver to take control. From this experience, I conclude that Active Driving Assist is best reserved for freeways with gentle bends in the pavement.

In 2022, Jeep plans to release a hands-free version of Active Driving Assist. This will make the technology similar to Super Cruise from General Motors and BlueCruise from Ford Motor Company. Undoubtedly, this new hands-free version of Active Driving Assist will be available only on approved stretches of limited-access highways. Also, drivers will still need to pay close attention and take full control of the Grand Cherokee when necessary.

How much cargo space does the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee have?

Given its shorter length and more rakish rear window angle, it's understandable that the new Grand Cherokee isn't as roomy inside as the larger and more accommodating Grand Cherokee L. Nevertheless, the new Grand Cherokee holds 37.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its back seat, and a maximum of 70.8 cubic feet with it folded down.

Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee get good gas mileage?

Until the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid arrives, the most efficient version of this SUV has the V6 engine and RWD or 4WD. According to Jeep, a Grand Cherokee V6 will return 21 mpg in combined driving. That aligns with my experience in Utah, where a Limited V6 4WD averaged 21.3 mpg. Given its 23-gallon fuel tank, this vehicle would offer nearly 490 miles of maximum driving range, but you'd need to stop around the 450-mile mark.

Choose the V8 engine, which requires 4WD, and Jeep says you can expect to get 17 mpg in combined driving. That's precisely what an Overland V8 4WD returned over nearly 100 miles of driving and suggests a maximum range of about 390 miles (or 350 miles since you're not going to drain the tank dry).

Is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

As this review is published, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted crash tests on the redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee.

With that said, indicators suggest the new Grand Cherokee will be safer than the previous-generation model. The underlying engineering makes greater use of high-strength steel for improved protection. New driving-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies can help reduce the chance of a crash in the first place.

For now, the answer to this question is: probably, but we'll need to wait and see.

Most people are familiar with the fairy tale of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." In the automotive equivalent of the story, among midsize SUVs, the redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee strikes me as "just right."

Compared to crossovers, the Grand Cherokee offers more ground clearance when you need it and greater off-roading capability when you want it. It can tow thousands of pounds more weight, too.

Compared to SUVs made for traveling well off the pavement—of which there are just a few—the Grand Cherokee is more refined and sophisticated. The closest apples-to-apples competitor is the Toyota 4Runner, and the Toyota is slow, sloppy, and downright agrarian compared to the Jeep.

Of course, if you're a fan of the Grand Cherokee, you already know this. This Jeep is a unicorn in a sea of all-too-similar 5-passenger midsize SUVs. But you'll pay a price premium for the privilege of owning the redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee, that's for sure.
