On D-Day (June 6), Rivian unveiled the second-generation versions of the R1S SUV and R1T pickup, so the brand’s changes for 2025, while significant, aren’t especially visible.
While exterior styling remains virtually unchanged on both SUV and truck models, the new-gen vehicles feature extensive hardware improvements, new motor configurations, advanced autonomy systems, and upgraded software. One significant change is the heavy reliance on in-house-designed motors, including a 1,025-horsepower Quad-Motor option for the R1T. Most changes extend across both the R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck.
Changes to the individual 2025 Rivian models are listed below alphabetically.
For 2025, Rivian gives the R1S battery-electric SUV a new electrical architecture that reduces wiring and enhances the autonomy system. The upgraded system—also used in the R1T pickup—includes advanced sensors and AI technology and offers features like highway assist and on-command lane-changing assistance. Rivian also upgrades the overall user interface for easier, more intuitive operation.
Beyond that, Rivian enhances comfort and convenience with a new premium sound system with Dolby Atmos and digital car keys compatible with Apple and Google devices.
Like its sibling, ditto the above for the R1T pickup. The truck also gets new Large and Max battery packs with redesigned modules for improved serviceability. The Max pack offers up to an estimated 420 miles of range in the pickup. Budget-conscious buyers (if you can call those paying $70,000+ for a pickup “budget conscious”) will find a new lithium-ion phosphate-based standard battery pack offering an EPA-estimated 270 miles of range.
A revamped heat pump-based thermal system optimizes cabin comfort while new aero wheels and tires reduce drag.
