Rivian's flagship electric SUV, the 2025 R1S, might look the same as it did before, but it sits on a new platform and features notable improvements to its technology, performance, and range.
In addition, two new premium Ascend trim levels enhance the R1S lineup, bringing the total to five. Buyers can choose from the R1S Adventure Dual Standard, R1S Adventure Dual Large, R1S Adventure Dual Max, R1S Ascend Tri Max, and R1S Quad Max. You can also select between three battery pack options, with the Max battery supplying an estimated 420-mile range.
Though Rivian considers the 2025 R1S a second-generation SUV, the design is essentially the same. What's underneath it is new.
Still, there are a few stylistic differences. For example, Adaptive Drive Beam headlights will be available after a software update later this year. The software is used to control the light around bends and corners and adapt to oncoming traffic. The update retains the signature light bar design across the front of the SUV and its oval-shaped headlights.
In addition, the R1S offers an optional blacked-out appearance, a new Storm Blue exterior paint color, and fresh wheel and tire options.
Like the exterior, the interior updates are minor. The electric SUV can seat up to seven people in a roomy cabin, offering two natural wood trim choices and a new plaid carpeted floor mat design.
This Rivian provides ample storage, an air compressor, and multiple charging ports throughout the cabin. Vegan leather upholstery is standard, and the front seats include heating and ventilation. A large Dynamic Glass Roof stretches from the front to the back and darkens at the touch of a button.
One of the significant updates to the 2025 Rivian R1S is an impressive 1,025-horsepower Quad-Motor powertrain, which packs 1,198 pound-feet of torque when the driver activates Launch Mode. Rivian claims the Quad-Motor configuration will accelerate the SUV from zero to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds.
The standard Dual-Motor and new Tri-Motor setup are also available, along with three battery packs. The Max battery has an estimated range of up to 420 miles, while the less expensive Standard battery provides 270 miles of range.
A new Rivian Autonomy Platform employs 11 cameras, five radar systems, and AI prediction technology to improve the R1S's advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). Specifically, Rivian says drivers can expect better ADAS performance in challenging low-light and poor weather conditions.
As part of the standard ADAS package, the R1S offers Highway Assist, a hands-on semi-autonomous driving assistance system with adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance. Later in the year, the Rivian Autonomy Platform+ arrives with a hands-free version called Enhanced Highway Assist, complete with an automated lane-change function.
Digital key technology is also available on the R1S. It lets you store your key in a digital wallet on an iPhone, Apple Watch, or Google Pixel. You can use the digital key to lock, unlock, and start the SUV from your device.
A new premium Dolby Atmos audio system and a new subscription-based connected services plan called Connect+ are available for the 2025 R1S. Connect+ includes access to thousands of apps, a free Apple Music account, the ability to stream videos via Google Cast, and more.
Although the 2025 Rivian R1S's design remains nearly the same, it is built on a new R1 platform, significantly updating its tech, performance, and range. These improvements make it much more powerful and more competitive with other electric SUVs. Rivals to this Rivian include the BMW iX, Cadillac Lyriq, Genesis Electrified GV70, GMC Hummer EV SUV, Kia EV9, Mercedes Benz EQS SUV, Tesla Model X, and Volvo EX90.
