Changes to the 2023 Subaru Models

Liz Kim | Nov 15, 2022

Subaru enters the era of electrification with the introduction of the Solterra, its very first electric-vehicle (EV) model. The compact SUV offers more than 220 miles of range and, like every Subaru except for the BRZ, provides the enhanced traction of all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard equipment. Other changes for Subaru’s 2023 lineup include improved performance of its EyeSight advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for specific models and new special editions of the Ascent and Crosstrek.

Listed below are the changes for each 2023 Subaru model.

2023 Subaru Ascent Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

For 2023, Subaru refreshes the front and rear styling of the Ascent—the company’s largest vehicle. The 3-row SUV also debuts an enhanced version of EyeSight—Subaru’s collection of driver-assist technology—with improved operational smoothness, a new camera, and an electric brake booster. Cabin Connect facilitates speaking to rear passengers by magnifying the driver’s voice, while Subaru makes parking more manageable with a surround-view camera, both newly available for upper trim levels. A new 11.6-inch central touchscreen manages your infotainment choices. Finally, a new Onyx Edition Limited debuts for 2023, featuring more comfort features as well as the surround-view camera and Cabin Connect. You’ll find a 260-horsepower, turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine under the hood of all Ascents, and AWD is standard.

2023 Subaru BRZ Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

The second-generation BRZ debuted in 2022, so there are no changes for the 2023 model year. A 228-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine motivates the BRZ, with your choice of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can outfit the 2-door, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe in Premium and Limited trim levels.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

The only change for the Crosstrek crossover SUV is the debut of the Special Edition. Based on the Premium trim level, the new Crosstrek Special Edition features Desert Khaki paint, and unique style flourishes inside and out. The other trim level choices include the Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Hybrid.

Crosstrek buyers may choose one of three power plants: a 152-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, a 182-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, or a 148-hp plug-in hybrid that provides 17 miles of electric-only range. All 2023 Crosstreks, including the Crosstrek Hybrid, come with standard AWD. Base and Premium trims offer buyers a choice between a 6-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

2023 Subaru Forester Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru’s popular Forester compact crossover sees only minor changes for 2023. Among them is an enhanced version of EyeSight. With updated software, the system enjoys a wider field of view. Otherwise, the Forester continues to offer six trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring, all of which have a 182-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with standard AWD.

2023 Subaru Impreza Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

There are no changes to the Subaru Impreza for 2023. Buyers may outfit the compact sedan and hatchback in Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trim, although the Limited is only available in hatchback form. A 152-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine motivates the Impreza. A CVT carries the power to all four wheels, but buyers may opt for a 5-speed manual transmission for the Base sedan and hatch and the Sport hatch.

2023 Subaru Legacy Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru’s Legacy midsize sedan benefits from refreshed styling of the front and rear end. Subaru also enhances its EyeSight safety systems by adding a wide-angle camera to improve its field of vision and adds an electric brake booster. The infotainment system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone projection. Finally, the Sport trim level now comes standard with the 260-hp, turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that previously only came with the Touring XT. The Base, Premium, and Limited remain motivated by a 182-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. All come standard with AWD.

2023 Subaru Outback Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Some minor styling changes are on hand for the 2023 Subaru Outback. You’ll notice freshening around the front fascia and the wheel arches. For Outbacks equipped with the 11.6-inch infotainment screen, you can now connect your smartphone wirelessly to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, the Touring trim receives a wide-angle camera to extend the reach of active safety technology and an LCD rearview camera mirror. Meanwhile, buyers can now equip the Onyx Edition with either the base 182-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or the 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. Every 2023 Outback comes standard with AWD.

2023 Subaru Solterra Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

For 2023, Subaru introduces its first-ever EV, the Solterra. Developed jointly with Toyota and mechanically identical to the Toyota bZ4X, the compact Solterra SUV delivers 228 miles of range for the base Premium trim and 222 miles for the Limited and Touring models due to their larger wheels. Two motors generate 215 hp, delivered to the standard AWD system. The Solterra features 8.3 inches of ground clearance and a comprehensive list of safety and infotainment technology, although some may take issue with the lack of front trunk cargo space.

2023 Subaru WRX Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

For 2022, Subaru introduced the fifth-generation WRX, so there are no changes for the 2023 model year. The compact sport sedan continues to offer four trim levels—Base, Premium, Limited, and GT—all of which deliver a tautly tuned, driver-focused ride. You’ll find a 271-hp, turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine linked to your choice of a 6-speed manual or a CVT that sends power to the standard AWD system. Enthusiasts will lament the fact that the WRX STI is officially dead, but for many, the WRX provides plenty of athleticism.
