Perhaps the automaker’s most important model, the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 marks the next generation of Chevy’s iconic full-size pickup, introducing fresh styling, an upgraded interior, new technology, and revised V8 engines while retaining much of what makes it a popular choice among truck buyers.
In the high-dollar, ultra-competitive full-size truck market, continuous improvement and market adaptability are essential. Automakers absolutely cannot afford to stand still. Last refreshed for the 2022 model year, the Silverado 1500 was getting a little long in the tooth and needed a thorough update to compete with the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. That finally happens in the 2027 model year.
While the all-new 2027 model is a major redesign, General Motors (GM) is not changing everything about the Silverado. The automaker is keeping the current four-powertrain lineup: a turbocharged four-cylinder, enhanced and now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, two next-generation V8s, and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel affectionately known as the “Baby Duramax.”
The 2027 Silverado will be available in seven trim levels, including a basic work truck and three off-road-oriented versions: Trail Boss, Custom Trail Boss, and ZR2. The Custom and High Country trims also carry over, and a new “Silverado” trim replaces the LT.
According to Chevy, the new Silverado 1500 adopts the brand’s new truck styling, resulting in a “bolder stance, stronger face, and more premium execution.” Notable features include a new front fascia, new LED headlights and taillights, and more pronounced wheel openings. Designers also focused on giving each trim a distinct look. Three new colors join the paint palette in 2027: Apex Red, Pacific Blue Metallic, and Trillium Green Metallic.
The new Silverado features a tech-heavy digital interior, highlighted by a 12.2-inch gauge display, a 16.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and, on ZR2 and High Country trims, an 11.5-inch front passenger screen. Dual wireless smartphone chargers and a Multi-Flex center console are also available, as is Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance technology with trailering capability. The latter is standard on ZR2 and High Country and available on Silverado and Trail Boss trims.
The 2027 Silverado 1500 also gets a handful of newly standard advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including intersection automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian and bicyclist braking, side bicyclist alert, and rear automatic braking. It was not long ago that these features were limited to luxury cars, but as more consumers use trucks for personal use, the technology is reaching other segments, including full-size pickups.
Chevy says the all-new 2027 Silverado 1500 will go on sale in late 2026. The automaker will announce additional product details, including full powertrain specs, fuel economy, and pricing, as the on-sale date approaches.
While you can count the number of conventional, light-duty full-size truck models on one hand, that small number still represents a huge volume, and the competition is fierce. Among them, the best-selling Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 are heavy hitters, along with the redesigned 2027 GMC Sierra 1500. The lone foreign representative, the Toyota Tundra, also competes in this group.
With the much-needed 2027 improvements, the Silverado 1500 is certainly more compelling than before. However, the challenge is that, in the full-size truck market, the target is always moving, with near-constant updates from competitors.
A new F-150 is on the horizon, due to arrive by 2029. Additionally, the Ram 1500 received a mid-cycle update in 2025, brought back the Hemi V8 in 2026, and will introduce new Rumble Bee and SRT TRX variants in 2027. While Chevy is well positioned with its Silverado work truck, mainstream trims, and off-road variants, it cannot match the desert-running prowess of the Ford F-150 Raptor R or the Ram 1500 TRX, both of which feature factory supercharged V8s.
