The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 is essentially a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 that has undergone a luxury glow-up. While mechanically similar to its corporate cousin, the Sierra 1500 carries a slightly higher starting price and delivers competitive capability in a premium package. As a full-size truck, it is available in a wide variety of cab, bed, and drivetrain configurations.

The GMC Sierra 1500 received a comprehensive refresh for the 2022 model year, followed by notable equipment updates in 2024, including making the diesel engine standard on the off-road-ready AT4X trim level.
For 2026, the Sierra adds Glacier White Tricoat and Coastal Dune to the exterior color palette, while White Frost Tricoat and Thunderstorm Gray are removed. More significant is a technology change, as Amazon Alexa functionality is no longer supported.
The Sierra 1500 is available with a regular, extended, or crew cab, and with three bed lengths: short, standard, and long. As with other pickups in its competitive set, cab and bed configurations vary by trim.
Available engines include a turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 pound-feet, and a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 pound-feet. A 3.0-liter inline-six turbo diesel, rated at 305 hp and 495 pound-feet, rounds out the engine options.
The four-cylinder is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while all other Sierra 1500 engines use a 10-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive (4WD)is standard on trucks equipped with the 6.2-liter engine; with the other engines, buyers can choose two-wheel drive.
Eight trims are available: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. The entry level Pro trim starts at $44,395 and can be equipped with a regular cab and an 8-foot bed, making it a proper work truck. It includes a 7-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, and a two-speaker audio system.
Most buyers will likely spring for at least the SLE trim, which starts at $51,495 and includes a host of upgrades, including a 13.4-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and creature comforts such as heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
The top-spec Denali Ultimate starts at $86,190 and is the proverbial “cowboy Cadillac.” In addition to the 6.2-liter V8 and 4WD, it features 22-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a power sunroof, and power-retractable side assist steps. It also includes three years of General Motors’ Super Cruise hands-free driving technology.
When properly equipped, the 2026 Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,200 pounds and carry a payload of 2,240 pounds. All Sierra 1500 pickups come standard with the GMC Pro Safety suite of driver assist features, including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assistance, lane departure warning, and automatic high beam headlights.

The full-size pickup segment is highly competitive. While it is easy to spec a Sierra that overlaps with the Silverado, its natural enemies are well-optioned versions of the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. Notably, all those rivals offer hybrid powertrains.
Although the AT4X trim does not have the horsepower to compete with Ford’s outrageous Raptor R or the Ram TRX, neither Ford nor Ram have an answer to the Sierra’s available diesel engine, and the same goes for Toyota.
