J.D. Power Car Ratings:Best Trucks 2022

Christian Wardlaw | Aug 02, 2022

What is the best pickup truck for 2022? Whether you’re looking for the best small truck, the best midsize truck, or the best full-size truck, J.D. Power can suggest one that ranks highly for quality, overall appeal, or both. After all, the company surveys tens of thousands of verified new-vehicle owners each year, asking them what they like and don’t like about the car, truck, SUV, or van they purchased. Based on what these people tell J.D. Power, we can share this list of the best trucks to buy.

2022 New Truck Ratings

J.D. Power does not rate models based on expert opinions. Instead, the company rates them according to what people like you say about the new vehicles they purchase. The verified owners who participate in J.D. Power surveys provide millions of data points that the company analyzes and summarizes in the annual Initial Quality Study (IQS) and Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. Based on this year’s study results, if you’re looking for good trucks, they’re on this list.

What is the Best Truck to Buy in 2022?

The list of the best 2022 model-year trucks to buy diverges completely this year. The ones ranking high in quality differ from those ranking high in overall appeal. So, if you’re looking for the best new truck, you’ll need first to decide whether quality or appeal are the most important to you.

All the Best Trucks of 2022 for Overall Quality

According to the 2022 IQS, three pickup truck models receive awards based on what the people who own them think of their overall quality. You will find them listed below in alphabetical order by make and model.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The highest-quality large light-duty pickup truck of 2022 is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500Chevy planned to refresh the 2022 Silverado 1500 light-duty, full-size pickup truck but delayed the improvements due to supply-chain issues. As a result, Chevy carried over the 2021 model-year truck for the first half of the 2022 model year, calling it the Limited, or LTD.

Since J.D. Power fielded the 2022 IQS between February and May 2022, the majority of responses came from owners who purchased the non-refreshed 2022 Silverado Limited (LTD) model before the truck received numerous updates and technology enhancements. With that said, the Silverado you can buy during the second half of 2022 has the improvements Chevy made to the truck. You can read about the changes to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado in our full preview of the new off-road-ready ZR2 model.

The refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500 comes in regular cab, extended cab (Double Cab), and crew cab configurations, with short, standard, and long cargo beds. Nine trim levels are available, depending on the cab style and drivetrain choice. As far as utility goes, the latest Silverado can tow as much as 13,300 pounds, carry up to 2,270 pounds of payload, and offers both rear bumper corner steps and a Multi-Flex tailgate to make it easier to load and access the roomy cargo bed.

It comes in 2500 and 3500 series models; the latter can handle up to 36,000 pounds of towing capacity and 7,442 pounds of payload capacity when the truck is properly configured and equipped. You can choose from regular cab, extended cab (Double Cab), and crew cab styles with a standard or long cargo bed and a single or dual-rear-wheel axle configuration. Five different trim levels are available.

Unlike the Silverado 1500, the Silverado HD sees only minor changes for 2022. Chevrolet reports that the Multi-Flex tailgate option is now available with all trim levels, the Custom trim adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and Greenstone Metallic is a new paint color.

A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is standard in every 2022 Ranger, supplying 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, which is good for towing up to 7,500 pounds of trailer and carrying up to 1,905 pounds of payload.

This year, the 2022 Ranger Splash appearance package returns with a new Orange Accent Edition, while the STX Special Edition adds new 17-inch black aluminum wheels. Hot Pepper Red Metallic paint is also new for 2022. It is widely expected that the Ford Ranger will get a complete redesign for the 2023 or 2024 model year.
