It's been a minute since Toyota last redesigned the Corolla. An all-new, much-improved design went on sale for the 2020 model year, available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback. Toyota expanded the Corolla lineup to include a hybrid, a performance-tuned GR Corolla, and a crossover SUV it calls the Corolla Cross.
The GR Corolla is undeniably thrilling, but most people buy one of the other variants, which are not exciting. And that's where the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX special edition comes in.

This isn't the first Corolla FX in history. Dial the Wayback Machine to 1987, and you'll find an angular little hot hatch with a creased-and-folded design and a high-revving engine. Toyota sold the Corolla FX16 for two years, then the car vanished from the U.S. market. However, with vintage 1980s Japanese cars becoming increasingly popular with collectors, the rare Corolla FX16 is back on the radar.
For the 2025 model year, Toyota decided to draw from that shallow well of nostalgia by adding the 2025 Corolla FX special-edition sedan to the lineup. Now, it's the 2026 Corolla Hatchback FX special edition landing in Toyota showrooms to spice things up a bit.
Since it is a hatch, it channels the spirit of the FX16 better than the sedan does. However, it doesn't offer additional performance compared to the Corolla Hatchback SE, on which Toyota bases it. Instead, you get gloss white wheels paired with Ice Cap, Blue Crush, or Inferno paint. A black vented sport wing hangs over the car's rear window, and Toyota glues a heritage-inspired badge to the hatch.
Inside, the new 2026 Corolla Hatchback FX gets black Sport Touring seats with suede inserts and orange stitching. Toyota uses matching stitching on the steering wheel, shifter boot, and door panels.
Toyota also equips the Corolla Hatchback FX with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and access to a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can also stream Apple Music and Amazon Music, and complimentary subscriptions to connected services plans provide access to appealing features like a digital voice assistant and an SOS emergency assistance button.
This new special edition of the Corolla also has standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a collection of collision-avoidance and driver-assistance systems that includes adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, and Proactive Driving Assist, among others.

Unlike with the original Corolla FX16, there's nothing special under the Hatchback FX’s hood, where a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine supplies the same 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque that you get in the SE and XSE trim levels.
That's enough to make the car feel lively, but rivals like the Honda Civic Hybrid Hatchback, Mazda 3 Hatchback, and Subaru Impreza RS are more powerful. Also, unlike the Mazda and Subie, the Corolla doesn't offer all-wheel drive.
Toyota says it will build only 1,600 examples of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition in the US. Will it become a collector's item like the 1987-88 Corolla FX16? Not likely. But it does inject a little visual excitement into a Corolla lineup that needs it.
