The Mazda CX-50 carries over into the 2026 model year with only minor additions to its lineup. None of those changes addresses its compromised infotainment system, one of the CX-50’s main demerits, and nothing takes away from what is otherwise an attractive, fun-to-drive compact crossover SUV that is available with three powertrains, including the CX-50 Hybrid and CX-50 2.5 Turbo.
For 2026, the Mazda CX-50 Meridian Edition is now available with the base “2.5 S” engine in addition to the 2.5 Turbo engine it was previously paired with. This trim level is a bit tougher in appearance and more rugged in capability, thanks to its all-terrain tires and black roof rails. The Meridian Edition also gains gloss black Mazda emblems, another 2026 addition.
Another addition for 2026 is the new white interior option. In the 2.5 S Preferred trim level, white leatherette (simulated leather) is added to the armrests and the outer portions of the seats. In the Premium and Premium Plus trims, the seats are fully upholstered in white leather.
Otherwise, the CX-50 lineup remains unchanged for 2026. The 2.5 S trim levels, powered by a 187-horsepower naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, include Select, Preferred, Meridian, and Premium. It returns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined, and, like every CX-50, it is all-wheel drive.
The Hybrid trim levels, which feature a 219-hp hybrid powertrain that returns an EPA-estimated 38 mpg combined, are the Preferred, Premium, and Premium Plus. While it is hard to dispute the CX-50 Hybrid’s fuel economy, the system is sourced from Toyota and, as such, does not perform as responsively as the CX-50’s Mazda engines and drivetrain during acceleration.
The 2.5 Turbo trims, which have a 256-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, are the Meridian Edition and Premium Plus. These trims return an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined, though given the robust power delivery, do not be surprised if it is worse in real world driving.
The CX-50’s interior stands out for its handsome, minimalist design and strong build quality. Unfortunately, the infotainment system relies on a knob-and-screen setup that struggles to support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. They are intended to be operated with a touchscreen, but you can use this system only when the car is stopped. The CX-50’s back seat and cargo area are also small for the segment.
Ultimately, the CX-50’s greatest appeal lies in its driving experience. If you are used to driving a sporty car, getting behind the wheel of this compact SUV should feel right at home. The Turbo trims, in particular, are genuinely fun to drive.
If the CX-50 Hybrid is the most appealing, consider the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Kia Sportage Hybrid, and the Toyota RAV4 (especially its sportier SE and XSE trims). If the CX-50’s sharp driving dynamics and luxurious interior are more appealing, move the Volkswagen Tiguan to the top of the list of alternatives.
