The Genesis GV70 debuted earlier this year as a 2022 model. The sleek, compact luxury SUV features standout styling, two powerful engine choices, and typical incredible Genesis value. The GV70 is Genesis' second SUV model after the larger and more expensive GV80, but it's far from the only utility vehicle the automaker has up its sleeve. At the Auto Guangzhou 2021 show in China last week, Genesis unveiled an electrified version of the GV70. Though it looks like a standard Genesis SUV, the GV70 EV (electric vehicle) features a robust electric powertrain in place of its gas-powered peer's 4- and 6-cylinder engines.
Genesis has not confirmed complete specs for the GV70 EV but notes that when a temporary Boost Mode is activated, the SUV can put down 483 horsepower. The electrified GV70 comes exclusively with all-wheel drive (AWD) and delivers a claimed zero-to-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds with Boost Mode activated. The SUV can disconnect the motor and driveshaft to convert to 2-wheel drive and conserve battery power when AWD is not needed.
Long charging times aren't fun for anyone, so Genesis gave the GV70 350-kW rapid charging capabilities, allowing it to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes. Like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the GV70 supports a 400V/800V charging system that can increase the voltage supplied by chargers from 400V to 800V. The tech also allows owners to use either charger speed without the need for an adapter or converter.
Also, like the Ioniq 5, the GV70 will offer a generator feature. Called V2L, or Vehicle-to-Load, the system supports up to a 3.6-kW output that Genesis says can power small appliances outside of the vehicle. A new "smart" regenerative braking system helps the car replenish battery life and adapt to changing driving habits and road conditions.
The GV70 EV's styling will be immediately familiar to Genesis fans. It features split headlights and taillights with a large grille and a swept-back profile. Other than missing tailpipes, there's no immediate indication that the vehicle is any different than the gas-powered GV70 that debuted earlier this year. A clean and ultra-modern interior greets passengers with a large center display and a lower center control panel for climate settings. The confusing rotary gear shift and rotary infotainment controllers from the gas GV70 are here, too.
