In-vehicle technology often takes driver engagement to the next level by making the piloting experience more intuitive, innovative, and organic. There may be no better example of this than the Hyundai Connected Car Digital Cockpit, an advanced configuration of screens and hardware powered by high-speed processors and a state-of-the-art computing system.
The completely digital cockpit includes a fully virtual flatscreen instrument cluster, a second flatscreen infotainment/navigation display, climate controls, and high-resolution smart mirrors. The futuristic configuration combines physical buttons with touch elements that give the driver control over multiple features and functionalities without taking their hands off the steering wheel.
Hyundai's advanced cockpit boasts a comprehensive lineup of modern equipment supporting a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The most obvious example is the digital side mirrors with cameras that provide a wide viewing angle of the vehicle's surroundings, effectively eliminating blind spots. Drivers may view blind spots in the digital cluster, seeing exactly what's in the adjacent lane. This same feature also lends itself to collision detection when leaving a parking spot, making it easier to maneuver in tight and busy situations.
Add to that Highway Driving Assist, which monitors the distance to a car in front, automatically maintaining a safe speed and interval. Highway Driving Assist also offers Lane Change Assistance that requires nothing more than engaging the turn signal. The system then executes a lane change maneuver on its own.
Lane Change Assistance is also connected to the navigation system, taking into account highway ramps, curves, and speed zones, so it adapts accordingly to keep you safe on the road. At the same time, the system communicates its intent and status to the driver for a fully transparent semi-autonomous experience.
Additionally, the rearview camera function makes parking and reversing in tight spots more accessible. On top of the traditional reversing camera, the Hyundai cockpit also offers a surround-view camera that utilizes real-time 3D graphics to visualize your car in relation to its surroundings and environment.
Lastly, Remote Smart Parking Assist allows the vehicle to park itself while the driver waits outside. This self-driving feature may be the most advanced iteration of autonomous technology currently available in the mainstream automotive industry.
The Hyundai Connected Car Navigation Cockpit's centerpiece is undoubtedly the flatscreen digital instrument cluster. Front and center, this interface acts as the central hub of all critical vehicle information while informing the driver of secondary functions relating to ADAS and navigation.
The primary source of Hyundai's high-speed navigation is the screen directly to the right of the instrument cluster, which stretches across the dash into the front passenger's view. These high-resolution 2D/3D screens represent the latest in terms of in-vehicle touchscreen interactive displays and include general vehicle settings, ADAS information, phone connectivity, and even Sounds of Nature for a more relaxing cabin experience.
In past models, Hyundai used over-the-air (OTA) updates to wirelessly update infotainment system features, such as navigation, the digital instrument cluster, and the head-up display. For newer models, the automaker has expanded the scope of the updates to include other critical areas of the vehicle, enabling software updates to the suspension, brakes, steering wheel, airbags, and ADAS. This approach ensures the car never stops evolving.
NVIDIA Drive, a world leader in hardware and software development, powers the computer systems in Hyundai's "connected cars." NVIDIA's programming and processing power allows Hyundai to integrate audio, video, navigation, connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based features into the cockpit. This technology platform will also support future apps and features across the carmaker's entire model lineup. Hyundai has partnered with NVIDIA since 2015 to find ways to create a feature-rich, software-defined user experience.
Other innovative tech includes facial detection to gain entry into the vehicle and fingerprint recognition for turning the car on. Another allows the owner to make payments in the vehicle by registering their card through the Carpay application. This feature makes the charging experience seamless for Hyundai's electric cars with automatic car-to-charger payments that don't require credit cards or smartphone-based mobile apps. All these innovations strive to make life easier and more convenient.
