What Is Audi Active Lane Assist?

Jessica Shea Choksey | Apr 30, 2024

A highway accident can occur when a vehicle unintentionally drifts out of its lane and moves into the path of other traffic. Fortunately, several advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) help to prevent this kind of incident. These include lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-centering assistance. Audi's Active Lane Assist combines all three into one comprehensive safety feature.

What Does Audi Active Lane Assist Do? - Find the best Audi deals!

The Audi Active Lane Assist system uses a camera mounted in the front of the rearview mirror that scans the road to detect lane markings and processes this data to determine if assistance is needed to keep the vehicle on course. There are three primary intervening functions of Audi Active Lane Assist to help keep a vehicle from drifting from its lane:

  • Lane-departure warning—Provides an audible warning and haptic feedback (steering wheel vibrations) if the car appears to be leaving its lane without a turn signal. This is the most basic type of lane-monitoring technology.
  • Lane-keeping assistance—This system uses controlled steering torque to make slight corrective steering adjustments and guide the vehicle back into its lane. It utilizes the functions of lane-departure warning but is active instead of passive, meaning it semi-autonomously keeps the vehicle from drifting rather than just alerting the driver that the car is off course.
  • Lane-centering assistance—This system keeps the vehicle in the center of its travel lane with continuous but subtle left-right steering adjustments. It is currently the highest level of lane-monitoring technology.

Although Audi Active Lane Assist will warn you with audible alerts, visual cues, haptic feedback, and subtle steering corrections when it appears you are approaching a detected lane marker and may leave the lane, you can always override the system with steering inputs. Ultimately, the driver has the final say on the vehicle's directional movement.

If you activate a turn signal before crossing a lane marking, Audi Active Lane Assist will not intervene in any way. The system will assume you are changing lanes intentionally. But suppose your vehicle has Side Assist and detects a car in your blind spot, even if you activate the turn signal. In that case, the system will initiate warnings and corrective steering.

How to Operate Audi Active Lane Assist - Find the best Audi deals!

You can turn Audi Active Lane Assist on or off by pushing the button at the end of the turn signal lever. When the system is on, the indicator lines in the gauge cluster will illuminate. White indicator lines mean the system has not yet met the conditions necessary to activate. This can occur if the road lanes are broken or interrupted, too wide, too narrow, too curvy, or the vehicle is not traveling at proper speeds.

Audi Active Lane Assist is intended for highway operation and fast-moving bi-ways, meaning speeds of 40 mph or higher. When the system's operational conditions are met, the indicator lines in the gauge cluster will turn green. It is now ready to provide warnings and feedback.

Beyond standard operation, you can configure Audi Active Lane Assist with individual lane settings using the car's Multi-media Interface, or MMI. Here, you can adjust steering timing and feedback. If you select "late," corrective steering occurs moments before the vehicle goes over the lane marker. When you choose "early," corrective steering happens continuously, keeping the car in the center of the lane.

When You Should Not Use Audi Active Lane Assist - Find the best Audi deals!

You should not use Audi Active Lane Assist in certain weather and road conditions. The system may not operate properly in situations with limited visibility, worn lane markings, broken or missing pavement, or an obscured camera field of view.
