Toyota has made exciting additions to its model lineup for 2023. The automaker has introduced a new electric-vehicle (EV) model and a hot new Corolla variant that will help the Japanese brand compete in an even larger number of segments than before. Here are the changes to the 2023 Toyota model lineup.
Toyota opted not to redesign the 4Runner in 2023, despite the SUV’s advanced age and somewhat barbaric driving demeanor. Still, the capable off-roader picks up standard blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning for the new model year. Toyota also shuffles color offerings for 2023, discontinuing Army Green and offering a new Solar Octane color.
The 4Runner also gets a new 40th Anniversary Special Edition model for 2023. It features compelling retro styling, bronze wheels, standard 4-wheel drive (4WD), and three unique colors. Toyota plans only to build 4,040 units of the commemorative SUV, so it may be hard to find.
Though it landed well ahead of the 2023 calendar year, the bZ4X is Toyota’s all-new EV model for 2023. It’s available in front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) and offers up to 252 miles of range in specific configurations. The futuristic SUV brings a somewhat subdued interior, but Toyota equips a large touchscreen and digital gauge cluster to keep things interesting. In terms of size, the bZ4X lands between the C-HR and RAV4 SUVs.
The bZ4X is the first of Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” vehicles to come to market. The automaker has also released a bZ Compact SUV Concept and plans to release a range of alternative fuel, zero-emissions vehicles in the coming years.
The Camry didn’t get a massive list of updates for 2023, but Toyota offers a new Nightshade Edition for the new model year. It’s available on the SE trim, and buyers can get it on cars equipped with FWD or AWD and the Camry Hybrid. The SE Nightshade Edition comes with 19-inch bronze wheels and is available in Toyota’s new Reservoir Blue, black, or white.
The gas Camry has two engine choices: a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a 301-hp 3.5-liter V6. Toyota offers AWD for 4-cylinder Camry models, but the V6 comes exclusively with FWD. The Camry Hybrid’s powertrain delivers 176 hp and 163 pound-feet of torque while returning up to 53 mpg on the highway.
The venerable Corolla got a significant refresh for 2023. Toyota revised the car’s exterior styling, giving it a sharp new front-end look and larger daytime running lights. All trims step up to Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which brings a new Proactive Driving Assist system. Inside, the revised Corolla comes standard with a new 8-inch touchscreen display that brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and two back-seat USB-C ports. The XSE trim adds wireless charging and an 800-watt JBL sound system. Two new colors are available: Blue Crush Metallic and Inferno.
Toyota released the brand-new Corolla Cross for 2022, and the model gains a new hybrid powertrain option for 2023. The Corolla Cross Hybrid gets a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a trio of electric motors. Combined output lands at 194 hp. The standard gas vehicle receives a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 169 hp. It comes with FWD and is available with AWD, while the hybrid model comes standard with all-wheel drive.
Toyota introduces three new trim levels for 2023: S, SE, and XSE. The crossover also gets an infotainment update to match the Corolla, and an 8-inch display now comes standard.
The Toyota Crown is an all-new model for 2023, though Toyota did sell a car under that name decades ago. The new Crown is a unique lifted sedan that comes exclusively with hybrid powertrains. The base configuration includes three electric motors paired with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes a combined 236 hp. Toyota offers a Hybrid Max powertrain option that brings a turbocharged 2.4-liter and an electric motor that produce 340 hp combined.
Though Toyota doesn’t bill it as a replacement for the outgoing Avalon sedan, the Crown’s cabin takes up the luxury torch for Toyota with premium materials and a clean design. Heated power-adjustable front seats come standard, along with ambient interior lighting and a large 12.3-inch infotainment display. Toyota recently improved its infotainment software, making it more intuitive and responsive. The new interface takes fewer interactions to achieve everyday tasks, such as changing a radio station or climate setting and offers a less distracting way to interact with the vehicle.
Toyota completely overhauled the lively GR86 for 2022, but changes for 2023 are far less impactful. The car gains a new GR86 Special Edition, bringing the top Premium trim’s features with upgraded exhaust, exclusive 18-inch wheels, and orange paint color. Toyota’s limiting production of the car to just 860 units, though, so it won’t be the most common 86 on the streets.
After years of watching European enthusiasts flogging their insanely cool 3-cylinder Toyota GR Yaris hatchbacks, Americans finally get their own model. The GR Corolla looks like an average Corolla but features 300 hp from a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. It comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and AWD, and Toyota gave it the same trick rally-inspired differential system from which the GR Yaris benefits. It allows splitting power distribution between the front and rear wheels.
Toyota has repeatedly mentioned the GR Corolla’s exclusivity, saying that it’s important to the brand to keep the car special. That means a hard time finding one for sale and potential markups for those that are available. The GR Corolla Core (base model) is on sale now, and the top Circuit goes on sale in early 2023. Toyota will also offer a super-limited Morizo Edition late in 2023 that features a back-seat delete and other unique upgrades. Toyota has not elaborated on production numbers for the car, nor has it disclosed how long the vehicle will be on sale in the United States.
The Toyota Supra returned in 2020 with a rowdy BMW-sourced inline-6, two seats, and standout styling. It did not have, at least at that time, a manual transmission option, as every other Supra before it did. Toyota fixed that situation for 2023 with a no-cost 6-speed manual option. It’s available on the 382-hp Supra 3.0 but not on the 255-hp 4-cylinder Supra. A limited A91-MT variant is available but limited to 500 units. It comes with an exclusive interior color scheme and unique paint options.
The 2023 Highlander looks a lot like the 2022 Highlander, but Toyota makes changes under the hood to improve the SUV for 2023. The previous year’s V6 engine is gone; in its place is a new turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 265 hp and 309 pound-feet of torque. The fuel economy remains flat, however, with the move. The Highlander Hybrid is still available, bringing 243 hp and a continuously variable automatic transmission.
The RAV4 is one of Toyota’s best-selling models, and for 2023, the crossover SUV gets a new infotainment system and updated gauge cluster. Toyota installs a larger 8-inch touchscreen for most trims, and top versions come with a significantly larger 10.5-inch unit. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard with the upgraded display, and Toyota made a 7-inch gauge cluster display standard for all trims.
The Sequoia was one of the oldest models on sale in terms of time since the last major update, but 2023 brings an all-new SUV. Toyota gives the new model a modern face with a boxier shape and straighter lines. The previous generation’s trustworthy V8 is gone in favor of the Toyota iForce Max Hybrid powertrain, which brings a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 paired with an electric motor. The combination delivers 437 hp and 583 pound-feet of torque and sends it to the front or all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to styling and powertrain updates, the new Sequoia is available in a luxurious Capstone trim that rivals the best from Ford, GM, and others. It brings high-end leathers, unique color schemes, and upscale materials like real wood trim. All 2023 Sequoia SUVs come with a 14-inch touchscreen, and Toyota’s new infotainment interface is light years improved over the previous model.
The Toyota Sienna went hybrid-only when it entered its latest generation a few years ago. The workhorse family hauler also got a more modern, luxurious cabin with better finishes and tech. For 2023, Toyota introduces a new 25th Anniversary edition. The automaker will limit production of the special minivan to just 2,525 units. It gets exclusive wheels, unique exterior styling, and an upgraded interior with a JBL stereo.
The Toyota Tacoma may not be as modern or luxurious as some competitors. Still, it’s one of the more off-road-capable trucks on sale and boasts fantastic reliability records. The 2023 truck got a new SX package with black exterior trim and badges. Toyota also introduces a new Chrome package, which brings polished wheels and chrome exterior trim. The SR5 gains additional features for 2023, and Toyota upgrades the Limited trim with a new 8-inch touchscreen and camera system.
The Tundra was all-new for 2022. Toyota revised the truck’s styling, powertrains, and tech to create a memorable new Tundra that can better compete with the American Big Three. Changes for 2023 include a new appearance package for the SR5 trim. The Tundra’s twin-turbo V6 powertrain remains, producing up to 389 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque. Toyota offers a hybrid powertrain with 437 hp and 583 pound-feet of torque.
The Venza enters 2023 with mild updates. Toyota offers a Nightshade edition for 2023 with black wheels and exterior trim. The hybrid-only Venza comes with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and three electric motors. Combined output lands at 219 hp, and AWD is standard.
