While you may think that heritage brands trend toward remaining staid and traditional, Land Rover disagrees. Instead, the storied British automaker continues its blitz of new models and variants of its biggest and priciest SUVs. The biggest news for 2023, of course, is the debut of the all-new Range Rover Sport.
For 2023, Land Rover’s smaller models get few or no changes; the inclusion of Amazon Alexa voice assistance as part of the brand’s Pivi Pro entertainment system is one of them.
In 2024, we’ll see an all-electric Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, and by 2030, Land Rover will offer a battery-electric version of all its models. In the meantime, here are the changes to each 2023 Land Rover model.
Land Rover’s rugged yet elegant Defender gets a long-wheelbase, 3-row version for 2023. It’s called the Defender 130 and joins the short-wheelbase, 2-door Defender 90 and 4-door, 2-row Defender 110. Two engine choices are available for the 130: a 296-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-6 or a 395-hp, mild-hybrid 3.0-liter inline-6.
A couple of new special editions debut for 2023, including a 30th Anniversary Edition based on the 110 and the Defender 75th Limited Edition for the 90 and 110. The former comes with white paint and wheels, while the latter features a distinctive Grasmere Green Powder Coat paint and detailing inside and out. Also, Land Rover realigns some of the SUV’s features according to trim levels.
For 2023, Land Rover’s 3-row Discovery receives a new digital dashboard, but not until mid-year. Buyers will still enjoy the newly standard adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, and a wireless phone charging pad. A new Metropolitan Edition debuts; the top-of-the-line trim level includes features like 22-inch wheels, four-zone climate control, and a head-up display. It joins the Discovery S, R-Dynamic, and R-Dynamic HSE. Two engines await: a 296-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder or a 355-hp turbo 6-cylinder.
The only change for the entry-level Discovery Sport for 2023 is the inclusion of Amazon Alexa voice assistance in its infotainment system. Land Rover continues to offer the SUV in S, S R-Dynamic, SE, and SE R-Dynamic trim levels, with a 246-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder in the engine bay with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Even though the Discovery Sport is a compact SUV, Land Rover offers the option of three rows with seating for seven.
The fifth-generation Range Rover was all-new for the 2022.5 model year. For 2023, Land Rover expands its flagship Range Rover lineup with several variants. Let’s start with the engines. Joining the turbo inline-6 (P400 SE) and turbo V8 (P440 SE) is a new plug-in hybrid called the P530 SV that makes 434 hp and provides 48 miles of all-electric range. Each powertrain is available in short- or long-wheelbase form, with seating for five or seven passengers. Three well-equipped trim levels—SE, Autobiography, and SV—await to coddle you.
The 2023 model year also sees the debut of the Range Rover SV with its even more indulgent materials in themed groupings, exterior trim, and 23-inch wheels. Its twin-turbo V8 engine wrings out 523 hp. You’ll also find a new Range Rover SV Carmel Edition with a mere 17 units for sale; it has seating for four and plenty of bespoke goodies.
For 2023, the stylish and compact Range Rover Evoque is a carryover model, except for including Amazon Alexa voice assistance in its Pivi Pro infotainment system. Buyers can choose among five trim levels: S, R-Dynamic S, SE, R-Dynamic SE, and R-Dynamic HST. A 246-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder motivates the first four, while Land Rover reserves a 296-hp, mild-hybrid, turbocharged, inline 4-cylinder engine for the top-trim R-Dynamic HST.
The third-generation Range Rover Sport is all-new for the 2023 model year, with a fresh, upscale look inside and out. It’s full of the latest in infotainment and safety technology and has loads of available comfort and convenience features.
Several engines are available and correspond to trim levels. First, a 355-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 comes with the P360 SE. Land Rover tunes that engine to make 395 hp in the P400 SE Dynamic. A plug-in hybrid producing 434 hp and providing 48 miles of electric-only range resides in the engine bay of the P440 eAutobiography. Land Rovers saves the top-of-the-line, 523-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 for the P530 First Edition that the automaker says can move the Range Rover Sport from zero-to-60 mph in 4.3 seconds.
New for 2023, the Range Rover Velar debuts a new, top-of-the-line trim level. A 395-hp, turbo- and supercharged, inline 6-cylinder engine powers the HST. It has an adjustable air suspension, adaptive dampers, and goodies like black 21-inch wheels, roof, and exterior trim. The three other trim levels—S, R-Dynamic S, and HSE—carry over from 2022 and stay with the 247-hp, turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine.
