Hyundai is continuing to shift its strategy toward fast-selling SUVs (the lineup now boasts seven models of various sizes and powertrains) along with the electrification of its vehicles. For 2022, Hyundai debuts its all-new Ioniq 5, Santa Cruz, and Tucson, while its sedans and hatchbacks see only minor changes.
Other changes to individual model lines are listed below in alphabetical order.
The smallest, most affordable Hyundai, the Accent sedan, has no changes for 2022, save for a standard immobilizer.
Hyundai debuts a new N Performance model for the 2022 model year with a rip-roaring 276-horsepower engine matched to an available 6-speed manual transmission for the Elantra compact sedan. Underpinning the car is a specially tuned sport suspension with a rear strut bar. You won’t mistake an N for a regular Elantra as it proudly features unique styling treatments and badging inside and out.
Otherwise, the Elantra is a carryover model from 2021.
The Ioniq hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) hatchbacks see no changes for 2022. You can’t get an Ioniq EV anymore, since Hyundai is using the Ioniq 5 name for their new crossover electric vehicle (EV).
The Ioniq EV gets a new Ioniq 5 model, featuring a targeted driving range of 300 miles and speedy 800-volt multi-charging that gets your battery charged from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes, according to Hyundai.
Hyundai’s funky little Kona crossover receives a fairly comprehensive redesign for the 2022 model year, increasing 1.6 inches in length, changing its silhouette and creating more cargo and passenger space. It also sports new front and rear fascias along with a more sophisticated interior and technology. The base engine remains a 2.0-liter I4, but the Limited and N Line trim levels are motivated by a turbocharged 1.6-liter I4 that now makes 195 hp.
Meanwhile, the Kona N performance model increases its athletic credentials with a turbocharged 280-hp 2.0-liter I4 and plenty of performance upgrades.
Hyundai’s California-only hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle, the Nexo, upgrades its digital instrument cluster, which increases from 7 inches to 10.25 inches for 2022.
The base SE trim of the Palisade gets a significant safety upgrade for 2022 with standard blind-spot avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, Safe Exit Assist, and side mirrors with integrated side turn indicators.
Hyundai’s new Santa Cruz appropriates the crossover-in-the-front, pickup-in-the-back formula of the Chevy El Camino and the Subaru Baja. Under the hood lies a 190-hp 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, while a 275-hp turbocharged I4 is offered as an upgrade. Both engines offer all-wheel drive; the Turbo model gives you 5,000 pounds of towing capacity.
The midsize Santa Fe SUV has a brand-new PHEV version with 30 miles of electric-only range and averages around 33 mpg from the combined 260-hp power plant. Also, the new XRT trim level debuts with darkened wheels and front grille, beefier side cladding, and step rails.
Meanwhile, the base SE gets a safety upgrade with newly standard side mirrors with turn signals, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, and Safe Exit Assist.
Hyundai’s midsize Sonata sedan debuts a new N Line Night Edition that features distinctive wheels, badging, and spoiler for 2022. Otherwise, dynamic voice recognition and Highway Driving Assist, a 10.3-inch touchscreen, and panoramic sunroof previously available on the Technology package are now standard on the SEL Plus trim.
Hyundai marches into 2022 with a brand-new Hyundai Tucson that boasts several powertrains choices—including a gas-electric hybrid and a plug-in version—and two new performance-oriented iterations. The Tucson compact crossover is Hyundai’s best-seller and the brand’s most important model. For 2022, the fourth-generation Tucson debuts; it’s longer and wider than ever and is brimming with the latest infotainment and safety technology.
The Veloster, a rascal of a 3-door hatchback, survives only in Veloster N form. It packs 275 hp matched to your choice of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed N dual-clutch automatic transmission.
An engine immobilizer is standard across all trim levels, and a power sunroof comes standard on the SEL, while the Denim trim is now called the Limited. Otherwise, the Hyundai Venue subcompact sport ute carries into 2022 with no changes.
