The most potent powertrain in the range is a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 handcrafted by AMG. It produces 603 hp and 627 pound-feet of torque, and Mercedes claims it helps this SUV sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. All 2026 GLE SUVs have a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, and 4Matic all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional for improved handling in rain and snow.
This Mercedes SUV is available in two body styles. A standard SUV version is available, and there is also a GLE Coupe variant with a coupe-like exterior and a swooping roofline. Buyers have plenty to choose from, with seven trim levels available: GLE 350, GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic, GLE 450e 4Matic, GLE 580 4Matic, AMG GLE 53 4Matic+, and AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic+.
The fuel economy for non-PHEV models peaks at 23 mpg combined. At publication, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had not released fuel economy estimates for the 2026 GLE PHEV, but the similar 2025 version achieved 60 MPGe combined with electricity and 23 mpg with the gas engine. That model has an all-electric driving range of 50 miles.
With the base GLE 350, you get exterior features such as 19-inch wheels and LED headlights. The cabin includes dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and heated front seats. You also get tech features like wireless smartphone mirroring, navigation, and wireless smartphone charging. Higher trims add amenities such as ventilated front seats and a Burmester stereo.
The list of standard driver assistance features includes blind spot warning and a surround view camera.
The GLE is capable and luxurious, while still costing less than many rivals in its class. This Mercedes is less expensive than midsize luxury SUVs like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, and with seven trim levels to choose from, you can select one tailored to your preferences and lifestyle. Still, it is not a good fit if you want a vehicle rugged enough to tackle trails. Buyers seeking a capable off-roader should consider the INEOS Grenadier Station Wagon and the Land Rover Defender.
