2024 Subaru Impreza Preview

Subaru might be known for SUVs, but it hasn't given up on cars yet. The BRZ 2+2 sports car, WRX rally racer, and the Legacy family sedan stand ready to serve customers who want something other than a high-riding box on wheels. And soon, the redesigned 2024 Subaru Impreza will join them.

It's been 30 years since Subaru introduced the Impreza to Americans, and now the car returns only as a 5-door hatchback in Base, Sport, and RS trim levels. Naturally, each of them includes standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a boxer-type 4-cylinder engine. The manual transmission is gone, making the continuously variable transmission (CVT) standard, but you knew that was coming.

When asked why the new 2024 Impreza doesn't offer a manual gearbox, Todd Hill, manager of product public relations for Subaru of America, said without hesitation: "Because nobody bought it."

Simplifying the Subaru Impreza to a single body style and three trim levels makes sense. But why keep the hatchback and not the sedan?

Garrick Goh, the carline planning manager for the new Impreza, told me that Subaru feels the 5-door hatch better fits with where the company is as a brand. However, it's worth noting that Subaru based the popular Crosstrek model on the Impreza hatchback, and it's not like people are lining up to buy the automaker's other traditional 4-door car, the Legacy. So, the Impreza sedan is now canceled like Kanye.

Subaru revealed the 2024 Impreza to journalists in advance of the car's official global debut at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show. A blue Impreza Sport and a red Impreza RS were available for examination, but not driving. Both cars are more appealing than almost any Impreza I can recall, though there is still too much front overhang throwing the proportions out of balance. And unlike the WRX, with its weird cladding, the new Impreza is a clean-looking machine.

Sport trim has standard 18-inch alloy wheels in a multi-spoke design with a machined finish. I like them better than the dark gray 18s on the Impreza RS, mainly because I'm sick of black wheels. The RS does look a little sportier, though, with its dark gray exterior detailing, RS badges on the front doors, and upgraded headlights and fog lights.

Inside the 2024 Impreza, you'll find the same dashboard and layout as what Subaru installs in the WRX. The Impreza has dual 7-inch touchscreen displays with the base trim, with infotainment up top and climate below. A smattering of physical controls surrounds these screens.

In addition, standard equipment includes automatic climate control, which now uses seat-sensor data to focus heating and cooling for more efficient operation. The Impreza Base trim also has power exterior mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, welcome lighting, and a 60/40 split-folding back seat.

Upgrade to the Impreza Sport and the car includes a proximity-sensing keyless entry system with push-button engine start. A larger 11.6-inch touchscreen center display incorporates both the infotainment and the climate systems. It retains commonly used physical controls for stereo volume and tuning, temperature adjustment, and defogging functions.

Choose Impreza RS trim for front sport seats with red bolsters, a 10-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The RS also has aluminum pedal covers and simulated carbon fiber interior trim.

Subaru says all 2024 Imprezas have an improved seat design for enhanced comfort and better support and that the car has reduced intrusive sound within a specific frequency range to quiet the cabin. I briefly sat in the Impreza RS, and thanks to the wide range of adjustments for the driver's seat and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, the car felt comfortable and supportive. Front passengers don't get a height adjuster, though.

I also sampled the back seat. Like most compact cars, it is a relatively snug fit for taller adults, but the bottom cushion supplies decent leg support. However, there are no rear air conditioning vents. Because so many Impreza hatchback owners fold the back seats down and leave them that way, Subaru says it carried the rear door panel contours into the cargo area for a more cohesive appearance.

Additionally, since every 2024 Impreza will have mounting points for roof rails and other accessories, Subaru added a mountains motif to the door sill trim that can improve grip when standing on them to load items like bikes, surfboards, and the like. The same pattern appears on the lower load sill for the cargo area.

Speaking of cargo, Subaru says the new 2024 Impreza carries slightly less stuff than the previous model. Still, Subaru's Goh told me the reduction is negligible, and the sacrifice results in more appealing styling.

Though Subaru has simplified the Impreza lineup for the 2024 model year, it also recognizes that the car needs more power. So, the automaker is offering a choice of two engines in the 2024 Impreza.

The Base and Sport trims have a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in a horizontally opposed, or boxer (or flat), layout. It makes 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque and uses a CVT to drive all four wheels. With Sport trim, the CVT gets paddle shifters and eight programmed ratios to make it sound more pleasing and feel more engaging.

For better performance, choose the new Impreza RS. It features a 2.5-liter flat-4 good for 182 hp and 178 pound-feet of torque; it employs the paddle-shifted CVT. Like the Base and Sport, the RS has an updated AWD system with active torque vectoring. Subaru promises that the AWD system delivers faster response time and better handling.

Subaru bolts these powertrains into a vehicle architecture that is lighter and 10-percent stiffer than before, contributing to what the company says is a quieter ride and more engaging driving dynamics. The new Impreza uses a version of the WRX's dual-pinion electric steering, and both the Sport and RS trims offer SI-Drive driving modes and have a standard sport-tuned suspension.

In addition to SUVs, Subaru is also known for safety, and the new 2024 Impreza will likely deliver it.

For starters, the company's EyeSight system is standard equipment. EyeSight is a collection of advanced driver assistance systems, and the new Impreza gets upgraded cameras with a wider field of view, improved software, and better pedestrian and cyclist detection capability. Furthermore, the Impreza features a standard rear-seat reminder system for 2024.

Unfortunately, you must choose Sport or RS trim if you want blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and lane-keeping assistance. These are optional on the Sport and standard on the RS. In addition, Subaru bundles them with a new automatic emergency steering system, which is an evasive steering assistance technology that works at speeds under 50 mph.

As has proven true with previous generations of the Impreza, Subaru says it engineered this new one to excel regarding crash protection.

In Base trim, the new Impreza has dual 7-inch displays in the center of the dashboard. The top one is a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. The bottom one controls climate system functions.

Upgrade to Sport or RS trim and the car comes with an 11.6-inch single touchscreen display that controls infotainment and climate functions. It offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and remains up-to-date through over-the-air software updates.

Subaru's connected services include but are not limited to automatic collision notification, SOS emergency service, a remote vehicle locator, and remote access to the car's locks, horn, and lights. Subaru says only the Impreza RS comes with a 10-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system.

When the 2024 Subaru Impreza goes on sale in the spring of 2023, it will compete against the hatchback versions of the Honda CivicMazda Mazda3, and Toyota Corolla. Some people might cross-shop it with the Acura Integra and Volkswagen GTI, while others might consider it an alternative to a Hyundai Kona or a Kia Soul.

Unlike the 2024 Impreza, none of those potential rivals includes AWD as standard equipment, and none offers the Subie's signature bleating engine and exhaust note. So, while the redesigned sixth-generation Impreza might be the most refined and technologically advanced one yet, it remains a unique choice in a small and practical car.
