2014 Lincoln MKC Previewed by MKC Concept in Detroit

Meet the new Lincoln model: the 2014 MKC. Although being touted by the automaker as a concept vehicle, the MKC Concept that debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show is a production-intent concept vehicle, meaning that much of what you see here will be applied to the 2014 Lincoln MKC crossover SUV that is due in showrooms later this year.

The new Lincoln MKC is based on the same platform as the Ford Escape. The MKC Concept is longer, wider and lower than the Escape, but Lincoln has not disclosed whether or not that will be the case for the production version. What Lincoln is saying is that the 2014 MKC will be "Lincoln's first-ever small vehicle." The definition "small" is relative, as back in 1977, the Lincoln Versailles midsize luxury sedan was considered small.

The MKC Concept is equipped with Lincoln's new split-wing grille design, LED running lights, signature full-width LED taillights, frameless windows, chrome exhaust outlets, and a clamshell-style tailgate similar to what Nissan has used for the Murano and Audi for the Q5 and Q7. Dipped in what Lincoln describes as a "cream-based" metallic tri-coat paint, the MKC Concept rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels and features a full-length panoramic sunroof.

Inside, the MKC Concept seats 4 passengers and features a full-length center console. The concept version of the new MKC SUV features a premium headliner, leather-wrapped roof pillar covers, machined aluminum accents, and what Lincoln terms "bespoke materials," such as naturally reconstructed Argento wood trim. Premium leather upholstery with hand-sewn French seams is wrapped around the heated and ventilated seats, and the MKC Concept is equipped with full digital instrumentation, a push-button transmission and MyLincoln Touch with capacitive touch center stack controls.

Lincoln has not divulged powertrain details, but it is reasonable to expect the 2014 MKC to offer a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The same turbocharged, 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine installed in top-level versions of the Ford Escape is likely to be offered in the 2014 MKC. Lincoln might also offer a 2014 MKC Hybrid with the same powertrain that is installed in the 2013 MKZ.
